Reforj is a 3D open world sandbox game where you play as an unnamed protagonist with the goal of surviving. [6] the game has you explore procedurally generated voxel worlds where you have to fight various enemies also known as "Mobs" and traverse through different types of environments with an option to enter gateways. [6] [4] In gameplay teasers it was showcased that you're given the ability to glide and have the option to switch between First-person view and Third-person view.
The game is similar and takes inspiration from Minecraft, a game whose console versions were previously developed by 4J Studios. among its similarities include its HUD, Graphics, Resource gathering, and Building mechanics, though unlike Minecraft the player is given a "sculpting tool" that gives them a greater variety of shapes, angles and other options when building. [7]
The game will also feature a creative mode where the player can play the game without taking damage with an unlimited amount of resources, it also features an option to pick a "flat world" a world with no terrain providing the player a clean slate for building. [6]
The game was made using the Elements Engine, a custom made game engine created by 4j Studios that allows for better world generation, faster loading time, fast and stable framerate, and an advanced physics engine. [7] While the game will feature multiplayer it will be peer-to-peer rather than being server hosted. [4]
Minigames and Tutorial worlds are a long term goal. A closed alpha version will be made available at some point in early 2025, currently the studio is focusing on enhancing the game's survival aspect. The game's visuals are not final and are subject to change, the studio is accepting direct feedback from its official Discord server. [4]
A world in Reforj totals to 4096 elements or 4−kilometer square, if you reach the edge you would loop back around and end up on the other side of the world. The game is planned to be released on modern consoles such as the PlayStation 5, PC, Xbox Series X and Series S. [4]

A sandbox game is a video game with a gameplay element that provides players a great degree of creativity to interact with, usually without any predetermined goal, or with a goal that the players set for themselves. Such games may lack any objective, and are sometimes referred to as non-games or software toys. More often, sandbox games result from these creative elements being incorporated into other genres and allowing for emergent gameplay. Sandbox games are often associated with an open world concept which gives the players freedom of movement and progression in the game's world. The term "sandbox" derives from the nature of a sandbox that lets people create nearly anything they want within it.
