Regional Science Centre, Chalakudy is a science museum located in Chalakudy, Thrissur district of Kerala, India. It is an autonomous institution established by the Government of Kerala, as a center for popularisation of science and scientific temper among the general public, especially among children. It started functioning in 2021.

Contents

The aim

Regional Science Center has been started by the government with the aim of imparting more knowledge about science and its basic principles among the general public, especially among the students. [1] The center, which comes under the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum (KSSTM), will enable students to conduct experiments and research programs in science. [2]

Chalakudy Regional Science Center is one of the National Council of Science Museum's 'Innovation Hubs' aimed at providing facilities to nurture new ideas and develop an inquisitive outlook in the youth. [3]

History

The foundation stone for the Chalakudy Regional Science Center was laid in 2010. [2] It became operational in February 2021. [4] [5]

The center

The Chalakudy Science Center is the third Regional Science Center in Kerala (the other two are located in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram), [2] and the first sub-centre of the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum. [1]

Facilities available

Science Gallery, Science Park and 3D Theater facilities for children are currently available here. [6] The main attraction is the 5000 square feet planetarium. [5] The 3D theater is a large format film projection system in which 200 people can watch the show in the planetarium theater at a time. [5] The gallery building block that occupies science galleries, 3D theatre, innovation hub and office complex has an area of 27000 square feet. [7] The center is spread over 3 floors. [8]

Of the four targeted science galleries, the Popular Science Gallery and the Mathematics Gallery are currently operational. [5] [7]

The National Council of Science Museums is spearheading the Innovation Hub, which is designed to organize various programs to develop science aptitude among students. As part of the Innovation Hub, the Science Library will provide students with various study classes in science-related subjects and short-term training in specialized subjects. [5]

The observatory, equipped with a high-resolution telescope for aerial observation, can observe the stars and planets in the evening after 6.30 pm. [5] It is also said that special shows will be organized at the center during special celestial phenomena. [5]

At the center, work is also underway to install a mirror maze with endless corridors and endless reflections. [9] This will be the first initiative of its kind in the state. [9]

Location

The center is located on a four-acre plot of land near the Panampilly Memorial Government College in Chalakudy, Thrissur district. [2] [4]

Admission fee

Admission to the Science Center is free for children under the age of four, with an entry fee of Rs.20 for adults and Rs.10 for children between the ages of four and twelve. [5]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contribution to the progress on education in Kerala. Students used to go this school from nearby areas and learn languages, literature, mathematics, grammar etc. After completing this students may continue study about specific subjects such as ayurveda, astrology, accounting etc. Censuses during 1800 shows that Travancore, Cochin, Kannur areas have many such schools. Even name list of ashans were used to be published along with the census.

Shrikrishna Science Centre is a science museum in Patna, Bihar, India which was named after the first Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Krishna Sinha. It was inaugurated on 14 April 1978, by the Minister of Education, Shri Thakur Prasad Singh. Shrikrishna Science Centre forms a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Ramavarmapuram is the northern suburb of Thrissur City in Kerala. This suburban area is home to several governmental and other institutions of national importance. The largest menhir type megalithic monument in granite in Kerala is found here. A local catholic church has recently been adorned with mural paintings in the traditional Kerala style. This is the first instance of such a church decoration in Kerala in modern times.

The city of Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, is also a major commercial and business hub of South India. It is said to be the heartland of Kerala's business acumen and home to most every leading Malayali entrepreneurs. The city which is famous for Bullion, Banking and its Business acumen, is the darling of investors in Kerala. Thrissur is also referred as the Golden city of India. It manufactures 70% of plain gold jewellery in Kerala per day. According to a survey, Thrissur city has been placed on 7th among the ten cities in India to reside. According to Registrar of Companies, the period from 1 January to 31 March 2010, 87 companies were registered in Thrissur and stood second in Kerala after Cochin. Thrissur's traditional strength lies in best entrepreneurial and financial capabilities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Council of Science Museums</span>

National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) is an autonomous organisation under Indian Ministry of Culture. It is the largest chain of science centers or museums under a single administrative umbrella in the world. There are 24 own science centers or museums and one R & D laboratory and training centre of NCSM, located in different states in India. Functioning under the Ministry of Culture, the NCSM has been built to co-ordinate all informal science communication activities in the museum space in the country. St. Mary's Forane Church, Chalakudy, is one of the 10 Foranes or deaneries under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Irinjalakuda, which was established in 1978 by the bifurcation of Thrissur Diocese. Prior to that, Chalakudy was part of Thrissur diocese, the most ancient Diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. Thrissur diocese has since been elevated to an archdiocese, Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Thrissur, within which comes the Irinjalakuda diocese. There are 16 parishes under the Chalakudy Forane. The people of Chalakudy, mainly in business or service sectors, belong to middle or upper-middle-class families. Chalakudy is one of those areas in Kerala with a high concentration of Christian population, most belonging to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.

Fr. Gabriel Chiramel CMI was an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, educationist, zoologist, author and social reformer, known for his services in the fields of education, health and human welfare. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2007 by the Government of India for his contribution to education and literature.

Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) in Thalassery, Kannur district is an autonomous not-for-profit institution under Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Kerala. In June 2022, the institute was upgraded to Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research.
