Chalakudy is a municipal town situated on the banks of Chalakudy River in Thrissur district of the Kerala state in India. It is the headquarters of Chalakudy taluk. It is the base camp for travellers to Athirappilly Falls and Vazhachal Falls. Chalakudy lies on National Highway 544 and located about 47 km (23 mi) north of the city of Kochi, and 30 km (19 mi) south of Thrissur.

Etymology

History says during the second Chera dynasty, people outside Kerala visited Chalakudy to learn vedas and Kalaripayattu from Chukkikulam Shala. These people lived in the banks of Chalakudy River and this accommodation is called Kudi. The combination of these two words Shalakudi is later modified into Chalakudy. [2]

Administration

Chalakudy Municipality came into existence in the year 1970. The municipality covering an area of 25.23 km2 is divided into 36 electoral wards. Chalakudy is a Grade-II municipality. [3] Chalakudy is an assembly constituency & Lok Sabha constituency. [4] Benny Behanan (INC) is the current MP of the Parliamentary constituency and T J Saneesh Kumar Joseph (INC) is the current M.L.A. of Legislative Assembly Constituency. [5] [6]

The main rail transport system in Chalakudy is operated by the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways, and comes under Trivandrum railway division. [7] [8]

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery which is 19 km from Chalakudy. All the major domestic and international flights are available here. Potta is a tiny village 30 miles north of Kochi, also known as Cochin. It belongs to the municipality of Chalakudy in the Thrissur district, state of Kerala, India. Potta was the temple land under the Irinjalakuda Koodalmanikyam Temple. In the past, the crops needed to supply the temple were cultivated at Potta. The village features famous temples named Pambambot temple, the Parakottilinkal Bhagavathi Temple and the Mathilthkavu Bhagavathi Temple. It also houses a Christian church called Cherupushpam Shrine. Also, several educational institutions could be found there including Panampilly Memorial Government College, Vyasa Vidyaniketan Central School, Kuriakos Chavara UP School and Dhanya Mission Hospital.

Benny Behanan is an Indian politician from Kerala. He is a member of the Indian National Congress party who serves as Member of Parliament from Chalakudy. He was the MLA of Thrikkakara Legislative Assembly Constituency from 2011 to 2016. He was the General Secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee for 17 years. Earlier he had won Piravom in 1982, and unsuccessfully contested the Idukki Parliament Constituency as UDF Candidate to the Lok Sabha in 2004. In 2019 Indian general election, he won the election with a margin of 1,32,274 votes against the LDF candidate Innocent (actor). In 2024 Indian general election, he won the election with a margin of 63,754 votes against the LDF candidate C. Raveendranath.

Carmel Higher Secondary School is an institution established and managed by Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) fathers. It is situated in Chalakudy, near the Chalakudy railway station in India. The school has a history of near to 40 years. It was the first English medium school in Chalakudy.

Fr. Gabriel Chiramel CMI was an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, educationist, zoologist, author and social reformer, known for his services in the fields of education, health and human welfare. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2007 by the Government of India for his contribution to education and literature.
