Oluremi Comfort Sonaiya (born March 2, 1955), is a Nigerian politician, educationalist and writer. [1] She was Nigeria's only female presidential candidate in the 2015 general election under the platform of the KOWA Party. [2] [3] But recently lost her bid to Dr. Adesina Fagbenro Byron in representing the party again in 2019 election. [4] [5]

Early life and education

Sonaiya was born in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where she completed her primary and secondary school education at St. Luke's Demonstration School, Ibadan and St. Anne's School, Ibadan. In 1977, she graduated from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where she studied French. [6]

She later obtained a Master of Arts degree in French Literature from Cornell University in the United States, and another master's degree in Linguistics from a university in Nigeria in 1984. She returned to Cornell in 1988 to pursue a PhD programme in Linguistics. [7]

Career

In 1982, she was employed as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Foreign Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University before she rose to the position of Professor of French Language and Applied Linguistics in 2004. [8] [9] She is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation where she went on to be appointed the body's Ambassador Scientist from 2008 to 2014. [7]

In 2010, she retired from her position at Obafemi Awolowo University and became politically active, joining the KOWA Party where she was voted its National Public Relations Officer, and went on to be the party's candidate for the 2015 Presidential election. [10] [11] [12] At the election, Sonaiya received 13,076 votes and finished in 12th place. [13]

Personal life

She is married to Babafunso Sonaiya, a professor of animal science, and they have one son, one daughter and grandchildren. [6]

Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo was a Nigerian nationalist and statesman who played a key role in Nigeria's independence movement (1957–1960). Awolowo founded the Yoruba nationalist group Egbe Omo Oduduwa, and was the first Leader of Government Business and Minister of Local Government and Finance, and first Premier of the Western Region under Nigeria's parliamentary system, from 1952 to 1959. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a federal university in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was founded in 1961 and classes commenced in October 1962 as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria, which was led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola. It was renamed "Obafemi Awolowo University" on 12 May 1987, so by the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida led military administration, in honour of Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987), the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, who initially thought of the idea of establishing the university.

Chief James Ajibola Idowu IgeSAN ; 13 September 1930 – 23 December 2001), simply known as Bola Ige, was a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He served as Federal Minister of Justice of Nigeria from January 2000 until his assassination in December 2001. He previously served as governor of Oyo State from 1979 to 1983 during the Nigerian Second Republic.

The Action Group (AG) was a Nigerian nationalist political party established in Ibadan on 21 March 1951, by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The party was founded to serve as the platform for realizing his preliminary objective of mobilizing Western Nigerians to forestall the NCNC control of the Western Region and the subsequent aim of cooperating with other nationalist parties to win independence for Nigeria. Olusola Adeyeye is a Nigerian biologist and politician who was elected Senator for the Osun Central constituency of Osun State, Nigeria in the April 2011 federal elections. He ran on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform. He also got re-elected into the Nigerian senate under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2015.

Adesuwa Onyenokwe is a Nigerian television personality. She was a former presenter at NTA before becoming an editor for the magazine "Todays Woman". She is a talk show host of the program "Seriously Speaking" which came on air in 2014. She is a motivational speaker and elocution trainer, living in Lagos Nigeria.

St Anne's School, Ibadan is a secondary school for girls in Ibadan, Nigeria. The school took its current name in 1950, after a merger between Kudeti Girls School, founded in 1899, and CMS Girls School, Lagos, founded in 1869. It can therefore claim to be the oldest girls secondary school in Nigeria.

Olubola Babalola is a Nigerian quantity surveyor and academic and researcher. She is a professor at the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Ile-Ife, where she has taught since 1993. She is the first female professor of quantity surveying in Africa. She served as the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
