Rhoda Wanyenze is a physician, public health consultant, academic and medical administrator, who serves as the Dean of Makerere University School of Public Health, a component school of Makerere University College of Health Sciences, which is part of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university. [1]

She was appointed to that position in September 2017, replacing Professor William Bazeyo, who was promoted to Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, in charge of Finance and Administration. [2]

Personal life and education

She was born in Uganda. After attending local primary schools, she entered Nabisunsa Girls' Secondary School where she completed her O-Level education. She then transferred to Mount Saint Mary's College Namagunga for her A-Level studies. [1]

She was admitted to Makerere University to study human medicine, graduating from there with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree. Following her internship, she joined the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), as a civilian clinician-contractor. After seven years with the UPDF, she went back to Makerere University and registered in the Master of Public Health program, as a student, graduating in 2002. [1] In 2010, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the University of Antwerp in Belgium. [3]

Career

Wanyenze has long and varied clinical and public health experience in tropical diseases research, with emphasis on tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. [4] She has worked at the Makerere University School of Public Health, since 2008. She has managed the postgraduate fellowship program at the School of Public Health, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Global Fund, among others. She has also carried out original research in the areas of maternal and child health. [4]

In September 2017, Wanyenze was appointed as the dean of Makerere University School of Public Health, replacing Professor William Bazeyo. [5]

Research

She has been involved in studies mostly about HIV which has brought to light new findings about the virus. some of her articles include; Uptake of family planning methods and unplanned pregnancies among HIV-infected individuals: a cross-sectional survey among clients at HIV clinics in Uganda. The study found that the uptake of family planning among HIV-infected individuals is fairly high even though there are a large number of unplanned pregnancies. [6] Factors associated with Virological Non-suppression among HIV-Positive patients on Antiretroviral Therapy in Uganda, August 2014–July 2015. [7] “When they know that you are a sex worker, you will be the last person to be treated”: Perceptions and experiences of female sex workers in accessing HIV services in Uganda. This study found out that societal, structural and policy level barriers are required to increase access to HIVservices among FSWs in Uganda. [8] “If You Tell People That You Had Sex with a Fellow Man, It Is Hard to Be Helped and Treated”: Barriers and Opportunities for Increasing Access to HIV Services among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Uganda. This study established that negative perceptions among providers and the community present barriers to service access among MSM. [9] Retention of HIV infected pregnant and breastfeeding women on option B+ in Gomba District, Uganda: a retrospective cohort study. [10] Guidelines for reporting trial protocols and completed trials modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other extenuating circumstances. [11] Hypertension awareness, treatment and control in Africa: a systematic review. The study established that there are low levels of awareness and treatment of hypertension and even lower levels of control. [12] The costs and effectiveness of four HIV counseling and testing strategies in Uganda. The study found that all testing strategies had relatively low per client costs. [13] Strengthening district-based health reporting through the district health management information software system: the Ugandan experience. The article established that implementation of DHIS2 resulted in improved timeliness and completeness in reporting of routine outpatient, inpatient and health service usage data from the district to the national level. [14] The COVID-19 pandemic in the African continent. [15] Fertility and contraceptive decision-making and support for HIV infected individuals: client and provider experiences and perceptions at two HIV clinics in Uganda. In pursuit of its mission both in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa, IDI provides care to People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and other infectious diseases, builds capacity among healthcare workers through training and ongoing support, maintains a focus on prevention, and carries out relevant research.

Celestino Obua is a Ugandan physician, pharmacologist, academic and academic administrator. He is the current Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He assumed that position on Friday, 24 October 2014. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Harriet Mayanja-Kizza, MBChB, MMed, MSc, FACP, is a Ugandan physician, researcher, and academic administrator. She is the former Dean of Makerere University School of Medicine, the oldest medical school in East Africa, established in 1924.

William Bazeyo is a Ugandan physician, public health specialist, academic, researcher, and academic administrator. From September 2017 until October 2020, he was the deputy vice chancellor in charge of finance and administration at Makerere University. During the preceding eight years, he was the dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health.

Sarah Ssali, is a Ugandan social scientist, researcher, academic and academic administrator, who is an associate professor and dean of the School of Gender Studies at Makerere University, Uganda's oldest and largest public university.

Professor Paul Waako, is a Ugandan pharmacologist, academic and academic administrator, who serves as the Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, a public university in the Eastern Region of Uganda, since 1 May 2019.

Andrew Ddungu Kambugu is a Ugandan physician who serves as The Sande-McKinnell Executive Director at Uganda Infectious Disease Institute and a Honorary Senior lecturer at Makerere University College of Sciences. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota. In July 2020, he was appointed to the United Nations 2021 Food System Scientific Group.

Etheldreda Nakimuli-Mpungu is a professor, researcher, epidemiologist and psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine, Makerere University in Uganda. Her research is particularly focused on supportive group psychotherapy as a first-line treatment for depression in people with HIV. She is one of only five recipients of the Elsevier Foundation Award for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World in Biological Sciences, as well as listed at one of the BBC's 100 Women in 2020.

Damalie Nakanjako, is a Ugandan specialist physician, internist, immunologist, infectious diseases consultant, academic and researcher, who serves as the Principal and Professor of Medicine at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Immediately prior to her present position, she served as Dean of Makerere University School of Medicine, from 2019 until 17 February 2021.

Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo is a Ugandan professor of Women and Gender Studies, advocate for gender equality, social transformation and respect for women's rights. She is also a social anthropologist, feminist and social norms researcher and a lecturer at Makerere University. She and Marjorie Keniston McIntosh co-authored a book called Women, Work and Domestic Virtue in Uganda 1900-2003 which won the Aidoo-Snyder Prize.

Prof David Guwatudde is a Ugandan academic and researcher. He is currently a professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health, Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

Annettee Olivia Nakimuli is a Ugandan obstetrician, gynecologist, medical researcher, academic and academic administrator. Since 17 February 2021, she serves as the Dean of Makerere University School of Medicine, the oldest medical school in East Africa. She concurrently serves as the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the same medical school, a role she has served in since 2016. She is also the President of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
