Richard Edwards (born 25 August 1956 in Llanelli) is a former Welsh Labour politician who was a Member of the National Assembly for Wales for Preseli Pembrokeshire from 1999 to 2003. Before politics he worked in local government and was a political researcher.
He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School,Carmarthen,and gained a BA,MA and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Birmingham. [1] [2] He also attended Swansea University. [2] He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and a member of the Unison trade union.
He is a cousin of the former BBC Newsreader Huw Edwards. [3]
He worked as a researcher and election agent for Alan Williams MP. [1]
Edwards worked as an Officer at the London Borough of Hounslow from 1979 to 1981 and as a researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Local Government studies from 1981 to 1985. [1]
He was Mayor of Carmarthen in 1997, [4] having first been elected to Carmarthen Town Council in 1991. [2]
He was elected as Member of the National Assembly for Wales for Preseli Pembrokeshire at the 1999 Welsh assembly election in a divided election,receiving just over a third of the vote. [5] He was initially selected to chair the assembly Local Government and Environment Committee,before committees were changed in March 2000,from which point on he chaired the Environment,Planning and Transport Committee. [6]
In November 2001,he announced his intention to stand down from the Welsh Assembly at the 2003 Welsh Assembly election,due to an illness he at the time refused to disclose. [2] [7] It was later revealed to have been leukemia,and that he had been suffering from it since shortly after being selected as a candidate in 1999. [3] First Minister Rhodri Morgan described him as "[seeming] to have managed to cheat death on innumerable occaisions." [3]
He was named Assembly Politician of the Year by Channel 4 in 2002. [8] [9]
In 2002,Edwards called for the Welsh media to end its 'obsession' with rugby,a sport he described Wales as being 'frankly hopeless' at,saying that they should instead focus on football. [10] [11] He was criticised by Gareth Evans,who stated that he was "just jumping on a bandwagon" and that Wales "have had five minutes of glory in football. [Wales has] enjoyed more success in rugby over the past 100 years." [12]
During his time in the assembly he was notable for his condemnation of the foreign policy of Tony Blair,condemning strikes on Afghanistan in October 2001,and subsequently criticising the Blair government's approach in the lead up to the Iraq War. [13] [14] [15] He called for Blair to be arrested and charged with war crimes if the UK went to war in Iraq without a second UN resolution at Welsh Labour's 2003 conference. [16] [17]
Edwards issued a statement of support for protests against the UK's Trident nuclear program. [18]
Edwards helped to lead opposition to the rollout of GMO crops in Wales, [19] including presenting a petition against their introduction to First Minister Rhodri Morgan,alongside Pembrokeshire colleague Christine Gwyther. [20]
In 2003,he was reprimanded by Presiding Officer Dafydd Elis-Thomas for describing Queen Elizabeth II as a parasite,while calling for AMs to be able to take an oath of allegiance to Wales,rather than to the Queen. [21]
Hywel Rhodri Morgan was a Welsh Labour politician who was the First Minister of Wales and the Leader of Welsh Labour from 2000 to 2009. He was also the Assembly Member for Cardiff West from 1999 to 2011 and the Member of Parliament for Cardiff West from 1987 to 2001. He remains the longest-serving First Minister of Wales,having served in the position for 9 years and 304 days. He was Chancellor of Swansea University from 2011 until his death in 2017.
Gwenda Thomas is a Welsh Labour politician who served as Member of the Welsh Assembly for Neath from the Assembly's start in 1999 to 2016. Thomas was first elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and re-elected in 2003,having almost doubled her majority.

Christine Margery Gwyther is a Welsh Labour politician,who served as Member of the Welsh Assembly for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire from 1999 to 2007,having won the seat in the first National Assembly for Wales elections in 1999. She was also the first person to hold responsibility for Agriculture in the Welsh Government,serving as Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development from May 1999 to July 2000. She lost her seat in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections,to Conservative candidate Angela Burns.
Paul Windsor Davies is a British politician who has served as Member of the Senedd (MS) for Preseli Pembrokeshire since 2007. He served as Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Leader of the Opposition in Wales from June 2018 to January 2021,resigning after possible breaches of Welsh COVID-19 rules. He had previously been Deputy Leader from 2011 to 2018 and Acting Leader in 2011 and 2018.
Margaret Delyth Evans is a Welsh executive and former politician who served as Deputy Minister for Rural Affairs,Culture and Environment in the National Assembly for Wales from 2000 to 2003. A member of the Labour Party,she was the Assembly Member (AM) for Mid and West Wales from 2000 until her retirement from the National Assembly in 2003. In 2010,she became the chief executive of the charity Dress For Success London,where she remained until 2014. She has also been a director at the Film Agency for Wales,a trustee at the charity United Response,and has sat on the board of Sport Wales since 2019.
Plaid Cymru originated in 1925 after a meeting held at that year's National Eisteddfod in Pwllheli,Caernarfonshire. Representatives from two Welsh nationalist groups founded the previous year,Byddin Ymreolwyr Cymru and Y Mudiad Cymreig,agreed to meet and discuss the need for a "Welsh party". The party was founded as Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru,the National Party of Wales,and attracted members from the left,right and centre of the political spectrum,including both monarchists and republicans. Its principal aims include the promotion of the Welsh language and the political independence of the Welsh nation.
The 2007 National Assembly for Wales election was held on Thursday 3 May 2007 to elect members to the National Assembly for Wales. It was the third general election. On the same day local elections in England and Scotland,as well as the Scottish Parliament election took place. This election was preceded by the previous Assembly election in 2003.
Llŷr Huws Gruffydd,is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician,serving as a Member of the Senedd (MS) for the North Wales region since 2011. He acted as interim leader of Plaid Cymru from 16 May to 16 June 2023.
