Marcus Albert Foster was an American educator who gained a national reputation for educational excellence while serving as principal of Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania (1966–1969),as Associate Superintendent of Schools in Philadelphia (1969–1970),and as the first black superintendent of a large city school district. He was appointed in 1970 as Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District in Oakland,California. Foster was assassinated in 1973 by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA),a newly founded leftist terrorist group.
Jack T. O'Connell is an American politician,educator and formerly the 26th California State Superintendent of Public Instruction,having been elected to the post in November 2002 with 61% of the vote. He was re-elected to his post by receiving a majority (52%) of the vote in the Primary election on June 6,2006,thus avoiding a November run-off. He is a member of the Democratic Party. O'Connell was unable to run for a third term in 2010 due to term limits and was succeeded by former state assemblyman Tom Torlakson.

Thomas James Kirk II operated several fraudulent higher education organizations,including LaSalle University in Mandeville,Louisiana,the University of San Gabriel Valley,and Bienville University. Kirk's "LaSalle University" was shut down in 1996 following a raid by the FBI. Kirk was indicted for tax fraud in 1996 and,after a plea agreement,was sentenced to five years in U.S. federal prison. Kirk later died in January 2008.

Marion Luther Brittain Sr. was an American academic administrator and longest serving president of the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1922 to 1944. Brittain was born in Georgia and,aside from a brief stint at the University of Chicago for graduate school,spent most of his life serving the educational community there. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory College in 1886,Brittain worked his way up the ranks from principal of an Atlanta high school to superintendent of education for the entire state of Georgia.
Lucian Lincoln Wood Jr. is an American former attorney who made claims about the existence of widespread election fraud during the 2020 US presidential election. He has faced legal sanctions for lawsuits made in furtherance of these claims in the state of Michigan. In July 2023,while facing investigation and possible disciplinary action by the State Bar of Georgia for violating the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct,Wood surrendered his law license and asked to retire rather than face disbarment.
Mohammed Kasim Reed is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 59th mayor of Atlanta,Georgia's state capital and largest city,from 2010 to 2018. A Democrat,Reed was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002 and represented the 35th District in the Georgia State Senate from 2003 to 2009. He served as campaign manager for Shirley Franklin's successful Atlanta mayoral campaign in 2001. After Franklin was term limited from the mayor's office,Reed successfully ran for the position in 2009. Inaugurated on January 4,2010,Reed was elected to a second term in 2013.

Established by Article VIII,Section II of the Georgia State Constitution,the SBOE consists of fifteen members,fourteen of whom are appointed by the Governor of Georgia. Its statutory responsibilities are to provide all children in Georgia with a high-quality education and to ensure the efficient operation of the public school system. To those ends,the SBOE evaluates local school board decisions,oversees the Quality Basic Education (QBE) Fund,and promulgates state-wide rules related to curriculum,teacher certification,and school board governance.
