Riverhead Raceway is a quarter-mile (402 m) oval race track with a Figure 8 course, [2] located in Riverhead, New York. [1] It is the only auto racing venue on Long Island since Westhampton Raceway closed down in 2003. [3] It started being built in 1949 [1] and opened as a dirt track in 1951, before permanently changing to asphalt in 1955. [2] The raceway was also well known for featuring a towering statue of a Native American, dubbed "Chief Running Fair", at its entrance until it was destroyed in 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy but rebuilt by Christmas and still standing at its original location.

Events

Riverhead Raceway has seven racing divisions: Modified, Riverhead Modified Crate Figure Eight, Late Model, Blunderbust, Super Pro Truck, and Legends. [1] [4] [5] It hosts races for the Whelen Modified Tour, Whelen All-American Series, and the Northeastern Midget Association. [1] Other events include demolition derby, school bus racing, monster trucks, enduro, one-on-one spectator drags and go-karts up until the fall of 2016.

The track's signature race is the non-champion Islip 300, named for the now-defunct speedway on Long Island, which began in 2016. The open competition event allows cars run to any of four different series ("Tour Type" modifieds) specifications. [6]

Notable drivers who used to race at Riverhead Raceway include Steve Park [2] and his uncle Bill Park, [7] [3] [8] Greg Sacks, Charlie Jarzombek, [9] Brett Bodine, Tom Baldwin, Donny Lia, and 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece.

Cultural references

Riverhead Raceway was featured as a filming location in the HBO series The Sopranos under the name "Chikamauga Raceway". It appears in Season 5, Episode 7 - "In Camelot".

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) is a modified stock car racing series owned and operated by NASCAR in the Modified Division. The Modified Division is NASCAR's oldest division, and is the only open-wheeled division that NASCAR sanctions. NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events are mainly held in the northeastern United States, but the 2007 and 2008 tours expanded to the Midwest with the addition of a race in Mansfield, Ohio. Robert Santos III is an American professional racing driver from Franklin, Massachusetts. He graduated in 2004 from Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. Santos, nicknamed "Bobby New England", is the grandson of Bobby Santos, a former modified racer. His sister, Erica Santos, is also a racecar driver. He is the cousin of former University of New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos.

Theodore Christopher was an American professional racing driver and business owner who raced and won in many different types of race cars, including Modifieds, SK Modifieds, ISMA, Camping World East Series, Late Models, Pro Stocks, and Midgets. Caffeine and Octane's Lanier Raceway is a 0.375-mile paved oval racetrack located just outside Braselton, Georgia. The track opened in 1982 as a dirt track, and was paved in the mid-1980s. It is currently owned and operated by High Octane, LLC, an auto events & multimedia business conglomerate. The track was under the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series banner with super late models, SuperTrucks, Junkyard Dogs, outlaw late models, mini stocks, INEX RaceCeiver/zMax legends cars and INEX bandolero cars. The track ended weekly racing at the end of the 2011 season, but remained open for larger events. In 2022, High Octane resumed weekly car events at the raceway for the first time since 2011.

The 2014 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is the 30th season of the Whelen Modified Tour (WMT). It began with the UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, which did not count towards the championship. The first race for the championship was the Icebreaker 150 presented by Town Fair Tire at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 6. It ended with the Sunoco World Series 150 at Thompson again on October 19. Ryan Preece entered the season as the defending Drivers' Champion. 2012 champion Doug Coby won the 2014 championship after 13 races, 22 points ahead of Preece. Preece won the last race, which meant he went from sixth to second in the championship.

The 2015 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour was the thirty-first season of the Whelen Modified Tour (WMT). It began with the Icebreaker 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on April 12 and concluded at the same venue with the Sunoco World Series 150 on October 18.

The 2022 Miller Lite 200 was a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race that was held on May 14, 2022. It was contested over 200 laps on the 0.25-mile (0.40 km) oval. It was the 3rd race of the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. Tommy Baldwin Racing driver Doug Coby collected the victory in his first start of the season.

The 2022 Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200 was a NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race that was held on June 25, 2022 at the Riverhead Raceway. It was contested over 200 laps on the 0.25-mile (0.40 km) oval. It was the 7th race of the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season. Kyle Soper collected his first Modified Tour victory with a late-race pass for the lead on Justin Bonsignore.
