Roberto Herrera (born September 5, 1963, in San Salvador de Jujuy) is an Argentinian dancer, choreographer and dance teacher, known for the Tango. [1] [2]
Herrera first started learning Argentinian and Latin American folk dances at the age of eight and began his training in Tango Argentino when he was twelve. Among his teachers were Antonio Todaro and Pepito Avellaneda. [3]
He has worked as dancer as well as choreographer for orchestras of renowned composers such as Osvaldo Pugliese, [4] Leopoldo Federico, Julián Plaza, Beba Pugliese, [1] Osvaldo Berlingieri, Néstor Marconi, Horacio Salgán und José Colángelo. With some of these orchestras, Herrera went on tour multiple times throughout Europe as well as Japan. [1]
From 1986 until 1990, Herrera was principal dancer (primer bailarin) of the National Folkloric Ballet (Ballet Folklórico Nacional) under Santiago Ayala "El Chucaro" [1] and Norma Viola. At the same time, he worked in various Tango establishments.
In 1986 Herrera featured as a solo dancer in Marcus Zurinaga’s movie Tango Bar . [1] [5] Two years later, in 1988, he starred in the role of Martín Fierro, based on the epic poem by José Hernández, in the play Aquí me pongo a cantar (english: "Here I start to sing") in the Teatro de las Provincias in Buenos Aires. In 1993 Herrera worked as a solo dancer for the dance company Tango Pasión with the orchestra Sexteto Mayor. [3] In 1994 he featured in the movie Muchas gracias maestro, which is based on the life of Osvaldo Pugliese. [1] From 1995 until 1999, Herrera was artistic director as well as protagonist of the show "Tango, una Historia" in the Buenos Aires upscale bar El Querandí, thus becoming one of the forerunners of similar shows found today in the various Casas de Tango of Buenos Aires. In 1997 Herrera was part of the opening show of the movie premiere of Evita in Buenos Aires as choreographer and dancer. The same year, he presided over the closing show of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival. In 2000 he featured as soloist together with his dance partner Lorena Yacono in the Gershwin Theatre’s Broadway musical Tango Argentino . [1] [6] [7] In 2004 he was guest dancer, together with Mora Godoy, in the leading role of Gaudencio in the musical Tanguera in the Teatro El Nacional in Buenos Aires. [3]
In 2002 Herrera founded the Tango company Compañía Roberto Herrera Tango and has been its director ever since. [4] [8] As part of the festivities surrounding the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Seoul, he and his company performed the show "Tango de Hoy" together with Natacha Poberaj. In 2005 he went on his first tour through Europe with his show "Tango Nuevo de Roberto Herrera". [3] So far, he and his company have performed more than 300 times all over the world with shows such as "Tango de Hoy", "Tango Nuevo de Roberto Herrera", "Tango, Una Historia", "Tango de Buenos Aires", [1] "Tango Origin" [2] and "El Tango". [9]
In 2004, in addition to his dance company, Herrera also founded his own dance school, the Herrera Tango Academy, with branches in Buenos Aires, Milan [2] and Munich. The Munich branch also closely cooperates with the local Tango school Tango genial. [10]
Herrera has been teaching Tango since 1979, offering workshops all over the world [1] and regularly performs at Tango festivals. Since 2003 he has been a member of the jury of the World tango dance tournament. [1]
Nuevo tango is both a form of music in which new elements are incorporated into traditional tango music, and an evolution of tango dance that began to develop in the 1980s.
Carlos Di Sarli was an Argentine tango musician, orchestra leader, composer and pianist.
Osvaldo Pedro Pugliese was an Argentinian tango musician. He developed dramatic arrangements that retained strong elements of the walking beat of salon tango but also heralded the development of concert-style tango music. Some of his music, mostly since the 1950s, is used for theatrical dance performances. In Buenos Aires, Pugliese is often played later in the evening when the dancers want to dance more slowly, impressionistically and intimately.

Argentine tango is a musical genre and accompanying social dance originating at the end of the 19th century in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. It typically has a 2

4 rhythmic time signature, and two or three parts repeating in patterns such as ABAB or ABCAC. Its lyrics are marked by nostalgia, sadness, and laments for lost love. The typical orchestra has several melodic instruments and is given a distinctive air by the bandoneon. It has continued to grow in popularity and spread internationally, adding modern elements without replacing the older ones. Among its leading figures are the singer and songwriter Carlos Gardel and composers/performers Francisco Canaro, Juan D'Arienzo, Carlos Di Sarli, Osvaldo Pugliese, and Ástor Piazzolla.
Juan Carlos Copes was an Argentine tango dancer, choreographer, and performer. He started dancing with Maria Nieves when he was 17 and she 14, and the pair later married. Copes and Nieves played a leading role in the renaissance in Tango dancing from the 1970s and, particularly, in Argentine Tango following the 1983 restoration of democracy in that country. Copes was the first to create choreographed tango stage shows and also worked on seven films. Later in his career he partnered with his daughter, Johana, from his second marriage.
Mariano Alberto Martínez, known professionally as Mariano Mores, was an Argentine tango composer and pianist.
Elías Isaac Alippi was an Argentine actor, theatrical impresario, film director and theater director, who was born and died in Buenos Aires. He is also remembered as an excellent tango dancer.

Atilio Stampone was an Argentine pianist, composer, and arranger prominent in the Tango genre.
Osvaldo Fresedo, nicknamed El pibe de La Paternal was an Argentine songwriter and director of a tango orchestra. He had one of the longest recording careers in tango history, from 1920 to 1980.
German Cornejo & Gisela Galeassi are an Argentine tango dance duo. They have been dancing together since early 2011, currently dancing for German Cornejo's Dance Company (GCDC), performing as lead dancers for the company. , Gisela and German won the title of World Tango Champions in 2003 and 2005, respectively, at the Campeonato Mundial de Baile de Tango . Both German & Gisela have appeared in numerous TV shows, Films and have toured extensively throughout the world. They have been judges in regional tango championships in Chile, Spain, Italy, Colombia and Japan. The duo is mostly known to Anglo-speaking audiences for their appearance in the American reality television show ¡Q'Viva!: The Chosen. and recently in America's Got Talent. They were winning finalists in Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony's TV show Q Viva culminating in the Las Vegas stage show of the same name in May 2012, at the Mandalay Bay Arena. In June 2012 they were JLO's special guest artists at her first-ever concert in Buenos Aires.

Ovidio Cátulo González Castillo was an Argentine poet and tango music composer. He was the author of many famous works, such as Organito de la tarde, El aguacero, Tinta roja and Caserón de tejas, María and La última curda, and El último café. The tango La calesita, which he composed with Mariano Mores, inspired the film of the same name directed in 1962 by Hugo del Carril.
El Sonido de mi Tierra is a company from Argentina, for Tango Argentino and Folklore Argentino, founded by Luis Pereyra in 1996. "El Sonido de mi Tierra" means "The sound of my land". The Great Dance of Argentina is the international name of the same company, but used outside of Argentina and Spanish speaking countries. Both names are of the same company and same production.
