Roderesch is a village in the Netherlands, and is part of the Noordenveld municipality in Drenthe.

History

Roderesch is an esdorp which developed in the 19th century during the excavation of peat. [3] It was first mentioned in the 1850s as "Roonder Esch", a (farm) field on higher ground near Roden. [4] In 1913, the first school was established in the village. There are several forests around Roderesch. [5]

Work camp

In 1930, it was decided to built a work camp for the unemployed near Roderesch. In 1934, construction started on the 6 hectares (15 acres) terrain. It opened in 1936, and groups of about 140 men stayed in the camp for nine weeks. During World War II, it was first used the Germans and later the Canadians. In 1955, a youth hostel was opened in the camp which closed in 1985. Since 1996, it is in private ownership for group accommodations as De Zwerfsteen. [6]

In the early 19th century, a reform housing colony for the poor and homeless was established in Veenhuizen by the Society of Benevolence. Mark Strolenberg Dutch politician

Mark F. Strolenberg is a Dutch politician of the conservative liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). He founded an Internet company at the age of eighteen and later worked as an IT professional for different companies. Strolenberg, born and raised in Hoogeveen, served on the town's municipal council next to his job between 2009 and 2021, and he has been a member of his local water authority since 2004 with a short hiatus. He unsuccessfully ran for member of the House of Representatives in the March 2021 general election, but he was appointed to that body in September after the resignation of Tamara van Ark.

Willem Albert Scholten Dutch industrialist

Willem Albert Scholten was a Dutch industrialist and landowner. He established the potato starch factory Eureka in Foxhol which laid the foundation of an industrial empire. Scholten would own 24 factories in Europe. He owned large plots of land in Drenthe for peat extraction, and was one of the founders of what would become the Holland America Line. In Groningen, Scholten built the Scholtenhuis, a large residential house on the Grote Markt, the main square, opposite the City Hall.
