Kolo Christopher Laurent Roger, commonly known as Roger Kolo (born 3 September 1943), was Prime Minister of Madagascar from April 2014 [1] [2] to January 2015. [3]

Kolo (Bakaka) was born in Belon'i Tsiribihina, Menabe at the south-west coast of Madagascar. His father worked at a post office and served as vice-mayor. His younger brother Roland Kolo was a Member of the upper chamber("Jolahy mpangalatra" in malagasy language) of the Parliament of Madagascar. [4]

He studied at the University of Antananarivo 19701977 where he obtained a degree in medicine. He specialized in surgery at a hospital in France before he undertook further studies in Geneva, Switzerland and became a radiologist. He started three private centers of radiology in the period 19972003.[ citation needed ]

He returned to Madagascar in 2013 to participate in the Malagasy presidential election, but his candidacy was not accepted due to not fulfilling the residency condition.[ citation needed ] Not having a political background, he worked closely with Hery Rajaonarimampianina and "Hery Vaovao hoan'i Madagasikara" ("New Forces for Madagascar") during the election campaign. After Rajaonarimampianina took office as president in January 2014, Kolo was named prime minister in April, following a consultation round which showed he had support from a majority in the parliament. [5] On 18 April, the cabinet was announced. It had 31 members with varied political affiliations. [6]

Andry Nirina Rajoelina is a Malagasy politician and businessman who is currently serving as the president of Madagascar. He started his career in the private sector, first organizing events on the Island, and then investing the advertising business and the media. He was the Mayor of Antananarivo from December 2007 to February 2009, and President of the High Transitional Authority of Madagascar from 21 March 2009 to 25 January 2014, up until the general elections were held in 2013.

High Transitional Authority

The High Transitional Authority was a provisional executive body that came to power in Madagascar following the coup that forced Marc Ravalomanana to leave the country on March 17, 2009 as a result of the 2009 Malagasy protests. It was headed by Andry Rajoelina, who appointed members to the body weeks prior to the handing of executive authority from Ravalomanana to the military, which subsequently gave the authority over to the High Transitional Authority.

Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Madagascar on 20 December 2013, following a first round of presidential elections on 25 October. The presidential elections in December were a runoff between Jean Louis Robinson and Hery Rajaonarimampianina, the top two candidates to emerge from the first round of voting in October. The official results of the second round were announced on 7 January 2014 with Rajaonarimampianina proclaimed the victor with nearly 54% of the vote.
