Staten Island is the southernmost borough of New York City,coextensive with Richmond County and situated at the southernmost point of New York. The borough is separated from the adjacent state of New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York by New York Bay. With a population of 495,747 in the 2020 Census,Staten Island is the least populated New York City borough but the third largest in land area at 58.5 sq mi (152 km2);it is also the least densely populated and most suburban borough in the city.

A special election for New York's 11th congressional district was held on May 5,2015,to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Michael Grimm. Grimm,a member of the Republican Party,announced on December 30,2014,that he would resign from the House effective January 5,2015,and not take his seat for a third term following his guilty plea for tax evasion. On May 5,2015,Republican candidate Dan Donovan defeated his Democratic challenger Vincent Gentile in the election and filled the vacant seat.
The Richmond County District Attorney is the elected district attorney for Richmond County,coterminous with the Borough of Staten Island,in New York City. The office is responsible for the prosecution of violations of New York state laws,as violations of federal law in Richmond County are prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. The current District Attorney is Michael McMahon.
Charles Fall is a member of the New York State Assembly,representing the 61st District since 2019. He is a Democrat. The district includes portions of the North Shore of Staten Island. The first Muslim elected to the assembly,Fall was born and raised on Staten Island following his parents' immigration from Guinea. He previously served as the Staten Island borough director for Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio,as well as the Chief of Staff to the New York City Parks Borough Commissioner for Staten Island. Fall has earned degrees from both Southwestern College and Pace University. He resides in Mariners Harbor.
Michael W. Reilly Jr. is a member of the New York State Assembly,representing the 62nd district since 2019. He is a Republican. The district includes portions of the South shore of Staten Island. Reilly formerly served in the United States Army Reserve and was an officer with the New York City Police Department. He previously served as the president of the Community Education Council (CEC) for District 31,which includes all of Staten Island. He has a BS in Legal Studies from John Jay College. He resides in Eltingville with his wife and family.
David Carr is an American politician serving as Council Member for the 50th Council District of the New York City Council. He is a Republican.
