Rory Palmer (born 19 November 1981) [1] is a British Labour Party politician,who also works for the food bank charity Trussell Trust as the East Midlands network lead. He is Labour's candidate for the 2024 England and Wales police and crime commissioner elections in Leicestershire.
He attended Hartland School (merged with Portland School in 2004) in Worksop in north Nottinghamshire.
He studied Social Policy at the University of York between 2000 and 2003, [2]
Palmer briefly worked for the Institute for Public Policy Research as a research assistant,before working for nearly five years as a parliamentary assistant to the Labour MPs John Mann and Peter Soulsby. [3] Having first been elected for the Labour Party as a councillor for the Eyres Monsell ward of Leicester City Council in May 2007,he became one of the council's deputy mayors in May 2011. [4] Palmer worked as senior policy,public affairs and campaigns manager at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. [5] He is currently the network lead for the East Midlands Trussell Trust. [6]
In the 2010 general election,he unsuccessfully stood as the Labour Party candidate in the Bosworth constituency in Leicestershire. [7] In the 2014 European Parliament election,he was second on the Labour party list in the East Midlands constituency [8] but was not elected. After the Labour MEP Glenis Willmott announced in July 2017 that she would stand down in October of that year Palmer succeeded her and became an MEP. [9] He remained in this role until the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU on 31 January 2020. [10]
Palmer is a member of the Fabian Society and spent two years on the Executive Committee of the party from 2019 to 2021. [5] For the upcoming 2024 England and Wales police and crime commissioner elections,Palmer is Labour's candidate for Leicestershire. [11]
A by-election was held for the United Kingdom Parliament seat of Leicester South on 15 July 2004. It was triggered by the death of Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) Jim Marshall,who died on 27 May 2004,shortly before the local and European elections in June. The by-election was won by Parmjit Singh Gill of the Liberal Democrats,over-turning a Labour majority of 13,243 votes at the 2001 general election.
Sir Peter Alfred Soulsby is a British Labour Party politician serving as Mayor of Leicester since 2011. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester South from 2005 until he resigned his seat in April 2011,in order to contest the new post of mayor. He served as Leader of Leicester City Council from 1981 to 1994 and from 1996 to 1999.
North West Leicestershire is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Andrew Bridgen. Bridgen originally served as a Conservative and now serves as an Independent following his suspension in January 2023 and subsequent expulsion. He joined the Reclaim Party in May 2023,then left Reclaim and became an Independent again the following December.

Andrew James Bridgen is a British politician and businessman who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for North West Leicestershire since 2010. He was a member of the Conservative Party until his expulsion in April 2023,having had the whip suspended in January after criticising the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and claiming that an Israeli cardiologist told him it constitutes "the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust". He joined the Reclaim Party in May 2023 but resigned from the party in December 2023.
On 5 May 2011,a by-election was held for the UK House of Commons constituency of Leicester South. It was prompted by the resignation of Sir Peter Soulsby of the Labour Party,who stood down from Parliament to contest the election for Mayor of Leicester. Soulsby was appointed Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on 1 April 2011,and the writ for a new election was issued on 5 April. The election was won by Labour Party candidate Jon Ashworth.
The 2012 police and crime commissioner elections were polls held in most police areas in England and Wales on Thursday 15 November. The direct election of police and crime commissioners (PCCs) was originally scheduled for May 2012 but was postponed in order to secure the passage of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 through the House of Lords. The government considers the elected commissioners to have a stronger mandate than the "unelected and invisible police authorities that they replace". The elections took place alongside by-elections for the House of Commons in Cardiff South and Penarth,Corby and Manchester Central,and a mayoral election in Bristol.

He was re-elected for the same ward again in 2022 He contested the Parliamentary seat of East Hampshire for the Labour Party in 2017,coming second with an increase of 7% vote share. He is also Secretary of the Newham Branch of the Fabian Society. In 2019 he was selected as an MEP candidate for the South East region but failed to get elected. Dasgupta is also a member of Labour's National Policy Forum and sits on the Work,Pensions and Equality Policy Commission.
Nigel Carl Porter is a Liberal Democrat politician in the City of Leicester. He served as the Leader of the Opposition on the Leicester City Council from 2019 to 2023,and has been a ward councillor for Aylestone since 2004.
Elections of police and crime commissioners in England and Wales will be held on 2 May 2024,the same day as local elections in England.
The 2024 East Midlands mayoral election is due to be held on 2 May 2024 to elect the first mayor of the East Midlands. It will take place simultaneously with local elections across England and Wales.
