Roseanne Vela (born December 18, 1952) [1] is an American model, singer and songwriter.

Early life, education and modeling career

Roseanne Vela was born on December 18, 1952, in Galveston, Texas. [1] Her family later moved to Arkansas, where she attended the University of Arkansas. [2] [3] While studying art and music, Vela also began modeling. She married the Arkansas-born musician Jimmy Roberts, but he died of cancer shortly after. Following this, Vela moved to New York, where her modeling career took off and she graced the covers of magazines including Vogue and Newsweek from 1975 onwards, and appeared in numerous television commercials.

Vela has also appeared in several films, including Heaven's Gate (as the "beautiful girl" with whom Kris Kristofferson's character falls in love during Harvard's graduation ceremony scene), [4] The Two Jakes with Jack Nicholson and Inside Edge opposite Michael Madsen.

Music

Turning her attention to music, Vela built a home recording studio for herself and signed a recording contract with A&M Records. She released her debut album, Zazu , in 1986. [5] The entire album was written or co-written by Vela and was produced by Gary Katz. It included contributions from both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (two of Vela's musical heroes) six years after they had disbanded their group Steely Dan. [6] Though the album was critically acclaimed, it went largely unnoticed in the US. It fared better in Europe and a single from the album ("Magic Smile") was a top 30 hit on the UK Singles Chart. [7] The album itself peaked at No. 20 on the UK Albums Chart [7] and was certified silver by the BPI in March 1987. [8] Further singles "Interlude" and "Fool's Paradise" met with less success.

It has been reported[ by whom? ] that Vela recorded a second album, entitled Sun Upon the Altar, but the album remains unreleased.

Following Zazu, Vela did not release any further recordings but has since become a backing vocalist for other musicians including Electric Light Orchestra on their 2001 album Zoom . Vela also performed a few shows with the band and was in a relationship with ELO's frontman Jeff Lynne for seven years. Vela co-wrote "A Woman Like That" with Lynne for the 1998 film Still Crazy .

Black Box is an Italian house music group popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group is currently made up of DJ Daniele Davoli, classically trained clarinet teacher Valerio Semplici, keyboardist and electronic musician Mirko Limoni, and vocalist Celestine Walcott-Gordon. French fashion model Katrin Quinol joined the act in 1989 and became the official face of Black Box, appearing on the cover of their single and album releases as well as in music videos, including the hit "Ride on Time", which was the highest-selling single of 1989 in the UK. The following year, it was revealed that Quinol was lip-syncing and had not performed on the recording. American singer Martha Wash performed the majority of the songs on the group's debut album, Dreamland, while being uncredited.

Geraldine "Dina" Carroll is an English singer. She had a string of hits during the 1990s, including the UK top ten singles, "It's Too Late" (1991), "Don't Be a Stranger" (1993), "The Perfect Year", (1993), and "Escaping" (1996). Carroll released two studio albums, So Close (1993) and Only Human (1996), both of which reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and were certified platinum. She won Best British Female Solo Artist at the 1994 Brit Awards.

Zazu (1986) is the debut album released by American model, singer and songwriter Rosie Vela. The album was produced by Gary Katz, best known for his work in that capacity with Steely Dan, and many of the songs feature Steely Dan's Donald Fagen on keyboards and Walter Becker on guitar. Tony Levin plays Chapman Stick on the songs "Tonto" and "Zazu".

Shakespears Sister were an alternative pop and rock musical duo that was formed in 1988 by Irish singer-songwriter Siobhan Fahey, a former member of Bananarama. Shakespears Sister was initially a solo act but became a duo by 1989, with the addition of American musician Marcella Detroit. Together they released two top-ten albums and a string of top-forty hits, including the 1992 single "Stay", which remained at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for eight weeks. Detroit was let go from the band in 1993, leaving Fahey as the sole member again, until the latter ended the project in 1996. After working under her own name for some years, Fahey revived the Shakespears Sister moniker in 2009. In 2019, Fahey and Detroit reunited as Shakespears Sister for a tour and released the singles "All the Queen's Horses" and "When She Finds You", and the EP Ride Again.
