LocalLink 29 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station in Northwest Baltimore to Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore through the communities of Rosemont (serving Coppin State College) and the corridors of Hilton Street, Caton Avenue, and Patapsco Avenue. During peak hours, selected trips operate via Violetville Industrial Park.

History

Route 29 was introduced in January 2001 as Route 16 when Route 22 was split. [2] Service along its route started in 1971 as 22 EXTENDED. [3]

Much of the current route of Route 16 historically was not served by a single transit route. Portions that were include North Avenue, which has been served by the no. 13 streetcar since 1890 [4] and also the No. 31 streetcar, which later became the No. 19 streetcar (and is currently Bus Route 91); both these lines currently overlap. Bloomingdale Avenue and Poplar Grove Street were served by the Nos. 4 and 35 streetcars (currently Bus Route 15). [5] Service on Fish House Road (where Patapsco Avenue is now located) between Annapolis Road and Brooklyn was provided by Short Line Routes. [6]

The no. 16 designation has previously been used for several Baltimore area public transit routes, most notably a streetcar that operated from Reservoir Hill to Fells Point from 1893 to 1948, that operated as a bus line until 1956. [2] [7] [8] Its route is currently served mostly by Bus Route 5. The no. 16 designation was also used for a bus route that operated from 1973 to 1989 between downtown Baltimore and BWI Airport, Odenton, and Ft. Meade, before being replaced by two express buses designated Routes 230 and 240. The current route is served by MTA Route 17 and Connect-a-Ride Route K. [9] Another route designated no. 16 operated express service from 1993 to 1995 between the North Linthicum Light Rail Stop and Ft. Meade/NSA before being replaced by a private carrier. [2]

In 2017, Route 16 was renamed as Route 29 under BaltimoreLink, with discontinued service to Violetville Industrial Park due to low ridership. [10]

Origin

Route 22, which had been operating since 1947 along its current route, succeeding Route S, its parent route, had a very long route up until 2001 that in all served nearly ¾ the circumference of the city, and only selected trips operated along Route 16's route, with the remainder terminating at Mondawmin. Due to the length and confusion among riders, MTA decided that Route 16 service should be provided on a separate line.

When Route 16 started, rush hour service operated every 30 minutes, and service at all other times was provided hourly. Sunday service along the route, which had not been provided on Route 22, was introduced. [11]

In 2005, as part of the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative, MTA proposed not only to double the frequency, but to modify the route in the Rosemont area to serve the Poplar Grove corridor, leaving Route 51 as the only bus serving the part of Rosemont of Route 16's previous route. The original routing plan would have operated along west from Gwynns Falls Parkway to Bloomingdale Avenue, and would then follow the routing of Route 15 up to Edmondson Avenue, as well as eliminated the Violetville deviation. After riders complained that the new route would not serve Coppin State College, a slight change was made to this modification, in which North Avenue would be used rather than Gwynns Falls Parkway. [12] Also, Violetville service remained.

On October 8, 2006, the midday and Saturday frequency of Route 16 was doubled. [13] On February 17, 2009, the routing changes were implemented. [14] The peak hour frequency was also doubled to one bus every 15 minutes.

The MTA operates a comprehensive transit system throughout the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. Route 3 (MTA Maryland)

Route 3 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Inner Harbor with most trips operating to Cromwell Bridge Road Park and Ride in Baynesville along the corridors of Loch Raven Boulevard and St. Paul Street, with selected trips to Sheppard Pratt Hospital in Towson, mostly via Joppa Road, and some trips making short turns at Loch Raven and Taylor. It is the successor to the 17 St. Paul Street streetcar line that ran from 1893 to 1938 and the Route T bus that ran from 1939 to 1947.

Route 91 (MTA Maryland)

Route 91 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from Sinai Hospital to City Hall, serving the communities of Pimlico, Arlington, Walbrook, and Bolton Hill, Coppin State College and the corridors of Garrison Boulevard and Eutaw Place. The line has the second-highest farebox recovery rate of all MTA bus lines.

Route 14 (MTA Maryland)

Route 14 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration between Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland. At most times, the line operates from the Patapsco Light Rail Stop in southern Baltimore with short turns at Jumper's Hole in Pasadena. The bus route, one of the longest local routes operated by MTA, is the successor to the Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad interurban, and mainly operates along the parallel Ritchie Highway, serving Brooklyn Park, Glen Burnie, Pasadena, and Severna Park. When the Light Rail is not running, Route 14 runs all the way to downtown Baltimore, mostly along Hanover Street.

Route 23 (MTA Maryland)

Route 23 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Catonsville, Maryland east through downtown Baltimore to the Fox Ridge community in Essex, serving the corridors of Edmondson Avenue on the west side and Eastern Avenue on the east, and the communities of Edmondson Village, Allendale, Rosemont, Patterson Park, and Eastpoint, and is one of the most heavily used bus routes operated by the MTA.

Route 7 (MTA Maryland)

Route 7 was a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line, which operated between 1959 and 2017, ran from Canton, Baltimore to the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station, serving the communities of Butcher's Hill, Little Italy, and Sandtown-Winchester.

Route 13 (MTA Maryland)

Route 13 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from Walbrook Junction in West Baltimore to Canton, mostly along North Avenue. The line has two main branches, both operating to Canton: one that operates via Fells Point and the other via Linwood and East Streets. Both these branches serve Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additionally, selected trips on weekdays and Saturdays operate to the block of Milton Avenue, Federal Street, and Patterson Park Avenue.

Route 15 (MTA Maryland)

Route 15 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from Security Square Mall, Westview Mall, Windsor Hills, or Walbrook Junction through downtown Baltimore and northeast to Overlea, with selected peak hour express trips to Perry Hall. The main roads on which it operates include Security Boulevard, Windsor Mill Road, Forest Park Avenue, Poplar Grove Street, Edmondson Avenue, Saratoga Street, Gay Street, and Belair Road, and is one of the most heavily used bus routes operated by the MTA.

Route 5 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from Cedonia in northeast Baltimore to the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station. The line has two alternating routes in East Baltimore: one via the area of Johns Hopkins Hospital, and one via a one-way pair of streets a few blocks north. A small number of trips also operate to/from Federal Street or Lanvale & Patterson Park.

Mondawmin station is a Metro SubwayLink station in Baltimore, Maryland. It is located under the intersection of Reisterstown Road and Liberty Heights Avenue in the Mondawmin neighborhood, adjacent to the Mondawmin Mall. It is the northernmost underground station on the line, and a major transfer point to many bus routes.

MTA Maryland bus service

The Maryland Transit Administration provides the primary public bus service for the Baltimore metropolitan area and commuter bus service in other parts of the state of Maryland. There are currently 76 bus routes, which include 43 LocalLink routes, 12 High Frequency CityLink Routes routes, 9 express bus routes, 19 commuter bus routes, and 5 Intercounty Connector or "ICC" routes. The local and commuter bus routes operate in conjunction with one subway line, three light rail lines, MARC train service, and various connections to other transit agencies.

Route 51 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Rogers Avenue Metro Subway Station to the Patapsco Light Rail Stop, serving the communities of Arlington, Ashburton, Mondawmin, Rosemont, Baltimore, Cherry Hill, and Mt. Winans, and the suburb of Baltimore Highlands.

The line currently operates weekdays and Saturdays in a circular fashion, linking the Cherry Hill Light Rail Stop to the Cherry Hill community. Two other MTA bus lines, Routes 27 and 51, also serve the Cherry Hill area.

Route 44 (MTA Maryland)

Route 44 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from Rosedale Industrial Park near Pulaski Highway just outside the Baltimore city limits on the east side of the city across the northern portion of the city to Security Square Mall, with selected peak hour trips to the Social Security Administration. Some early morning trips before 7 AM lay over at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) headquarters. The line operates mostly along Frankford Avenue, Echodale Avenue, East Belvedere Avenue, Northern Parkway, Rogers Avenue, and Gwynn Oak Avenue, serving the communities of Gardenville, Hamilton, Belvedere Park, Homeland, Roland Park, Pimlico, and Arlington, and the western suburb of Woodlawn.

Route 28 (MTA Maryland LocalLink)

LocalLink 28 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Rogers Avenue Metro Subway Station in Northwest Baltimore to a loop in Moravia in Northeast Baltimore. Service is provided about once every 10–15 minutes during rush hour, every 20 minutes midday, every 30 minutes on Saturdays, and hourly on Sundays. The line operates primarily along the cross-town corridor of Coldspring Lane and Moravia Road, transversing Arlington, Park Heights, Roland Park, Homeland, and Montebello. The line passes several universities, including Loyola College, Notre Dame, and Morgan State University.

Route 22 (MTA Maryland LocalLink)

LocalLink 22 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently operates between the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station and Bayview Medical Center, serving Television Hill, the Woodberry Light Rail Stop, Hampden, The Rotunda, Homewood, Johns Hopkins University, Waverly, Belair-Edison, and Highlandtown.

Route 62 (MTA Maryland LocalLink)

LocalLink 62 is a bus route in the suburbs of Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County to Turner's Station in Dundalk. The current route serves the Rosedale, Middle River, and Essex areas and the CCBC Essex and Dundalk campuses. The line was previously known as Route 4 prior to the launch of BalitmoreLink. LocalLink Route 62 replaced the entirety of Route 4 on June 18, 2017.

CityLink Lime (MTA Maryland)

CityLink Lime is a CityLink bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station along Liberty Heights Avenue and Liberty Road to a loop known as in Milford Mill with buses marked as "Milford Mill". The loop is composed of a square block, consisting of Liberty Road, Rolling Road, Church Lane, and Milford Mill Road. The spot of the layover depends on the time of day.

Route 57 (MTA Maryland)

Route 57 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Rogers Avenue Metro Subway Station in Northwest Baltimore to Security Square Mall, with selected trips to the Social Security Administration headquarters in Woodlawn. The line serves the corridor of Gwynn Oak Avenue and the communities of Howard Park, Gwynn Oak, and Windsor Mill.

Route 83 (MTA Maryland LocalLink)

LocalLink 83 is a bus route in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Old Court Metro Subway Station in Pikesville, Maryland to the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station in Northwest Baltimore along Old Court Road and Reisterstown Road, serving the communities of Park Heights and the Reisterstown Road Plaza. The line is the successor to Bus Route 7, which still operates south of Mondawmin. Route 7 operated along Reisterstown Road outside the Metro's hours of operation until 2001.
