Ruth Charlotte Croft (born 15 January 1989) is a New Zealand ultramarathon and trail runner. Croft was the silver medalist at the 2019 Trail World Championships. Her victories at major international races include the Tarawera Ultramarathon, Western States, and Ultra Trail Cape Town.
Born on 15 January 1989 in Greymouth, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, Croft grew up in the small town of Stillwater. [2] [1] She attended Rangi Ruru Girls' School in Christchurch, where she ran track and cross country. [1] As a junior, she was the under-20 national champion and competed for New Zealand at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics in the 3000 metres steeplechase. [3] She also competed as a junior at both the 2005 and 2007 World Mountain Running Championships. [4] [1]
After finishing high school, Croft briefly enrolled at Lincoln University near Christchurch, but returned home to the West Coast to work instead. She moved to the United States after receiving an athletic scholarship to run for the University of Portland in Oregon. After graduating from Portland, Croft moved to Taiwan to teach English. She lived there for five-and-a-half years, eventually moving to a job working in marketing for the technology company Garmin. [5]
Croft began competing in more trail races while living in Taiwan, and eventually became a sponsored athlete with Garmin. [4] She won the Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon 50k in Malaysia in 2013 and 2014. She also won the 100-km CCC event at UTMB in 2015, and followed that with a fourth-place finish at the highly competitive North Face 50 in San Francisco, California. She moved away from Taiwan in 2017, splitting her time between Europe and New Zealand. [6]
In 2017, Croft won the Translatlantau 50K in Hong Kong, the 62-km event at Tarawera in New Zealand, and the 73-km Les Templiers event in Millau, France. She returned to Tarawera in 2021, winning the 100-km event in a course record time of 9:21:03. She won Tarawera again in 2024. She won the 55-km OCC in Chamonix in both 2018 and 2019. [7] At the 2019 Trail World Championships in Miranda do Corvo, Portugal, Croft won the silver medal behind Blandine L'Hirondel of France. [8] It was the first medal for a New Zealand athlete in trail world championship history.
Croft competed in her first 100-mile race at Western States in 2021, having a successful debut in finishing second behind English runner Beth Pascall. [9] She returned the next year to win Western States in a time of 17:21:30. [10] [11]
Croft won the 100-km Ultra Trail Cape Town in South Africa in November 2023. She was scheduled to run UTMB in 2023, but came down with a virus days before the race and did not start. [6]
Croft ran the length of the 125-mile Arctic Circle Trail in Greenland in 2022. [12] In 2023, she ran the historic Nakasendo Trail in Japan along with Tim Tollefson and Olympians Magda Boulet and Desiree Linden. [13]
As of 2021, Croft was studying for a career in naturopathy. [14] [15] [16]
An ultramarathon, also called ultra distance or ultra running, is a footrace longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometres. Various distances, surfaces, and formats are raced competitively, from the shortest common ultramarathon of 31 miles (50 km) and up to 3100 miles. World Championships are held by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) for 50 km, 100 km, 24 hours, and ultra trail running. The Global Organization of Multi-Day Ultramarathoners (GOMU) holds World Championships for 48 hours and 6 days. World Records are ratified and recognized by World Athletics, the IAU, and by GOMU.
Ida Nilsson is a Swedish long-distance runner who also competes in ski mountaineering. In 2003 – 2006 she won a total of ten gold medals in Swedish championships in track & field and cross country running, plus two NCAA gold medals. After many years away from training Nilsson won the Swedish championship in ski mountaineering in 2016 and a couple of months later won the prestigious Transvulcania ultramarathon.
Emma Roca Rodríguez was a Spanish Catalan ski mountaineer and an eco-challenge member. She represented Spain which she was a captain, she helped her team to get in the top 10 spot.
Ellie Greenwood is a British and Canadian ultramarathon runner. She is a four-time 100km World Champion, winning both individual and team titles in 2010 and 2014. She won the 90 km Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 2014, becoming the first British woman to win the race. Greenwood is also a former champion and course record holder for the Canadian Death Race, Western States 100, and the JFK 50 Mile Run.
Eleanor Robinson is a British former ultramarathon runner and two-time winner of the IAU 100km World Championships. She was the first woman to run over 150 miles in a 24-hour endurance race. She was the winner of the first Badwater Ultramarathon in 1987. She was twice bronze medallist at the IAU 100 km European Championships.
Jacquelyn Camille Herron is an American ultramarathon runner and scientist born on December 25, 1981 in Norman, Oklahoma. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest Ultramarathon runners of all time.
Lizzy Hawker is a British endurance athlete. She has been dubbed as the Queen of the mountains, running ultramarathons while climbing the heights of Mount Everest. Some of her career highlights include five wins at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), former World Record holder for 24 Hours, and winner of the 2006 IAU 100 km World Championships.
Kristin "Krissy" Moehl is an American ultramarathon athlete who specializes in trail running. In 2005, Moehl became the youngest woman to complete the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, which included a gold medal at the Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run.
Rory Bosio is an American ultramarathon runner. She is specializes in mountain running, and won the 2013 and 2014 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

Kieren D'Souza is an Indian ultramarathon runner and endurance athlete. In 2016, he became the first Indian to qualify for and finish the Spartathlon, a 246 kilometre footrace from Athens to Sparta held annually in Greece. Kieren, then aged 23, completed the race in 33 hours, 2 minutes and 25 seconds, standing 85th among 370 participants. Up to 2016, only 29 athletes under the age of 25 had completed the race that has been held annually since 1983.

Carol Morgan is an Irish ultrarunner, who specialises in non-stop mountain ultramarathons 100 km and longer, often in challenging conditions with significant ascents / descents. Born in Dublin in 1973, where she trained as a nurse, she is an advanced practitioner in emergency medicine. Morgan holds the course record for endurance ultra event, the Kerry Way Ultra.
Aurélia Truel is a French ultramarathon runner, who specialises in trail running. She came second at the 2013 IAU Trail World Championships in Llanrwst, Wales, and was part of teams that won the 2011, 2013 and 2016 Trail World Championship team events.
Courtney Dauwalter is an American ultramarathon runner and former teacher. Widely regarded as one of the world's best trailrunners, Dauwalter became in 2023 the first person ever to win Western States 100, Hardrock 100 and the UTMB, three iconic 100-mile races, in the same year.
Jim Walmsley is an American long-distance runner. An ultra-trail specialist, his wins include the JFK 50 Mile in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Lake Sonoma 50 in 2016 and 2018, the Tarawera Ultramarathon in 2017, and the Western States 100 in 2018, 2019, and 2021. He holds several course records, including the Western States 100, set in 2018 and further improved by 21 minutes in 2019. In 2023, he became the first American man to win the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc.

Tarawera Ultramarathon is a trail running event which includes a 21km, 50km, 102km and a 100-mile ultramarathon trail race, with the inaugural even held in 2009, it is part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour. It is held annually in February and takes place in Rotorua, New Zealand. Awards are given to top men and women finishers in each category.
