Ryan James Ferns (born December 2,1982) is an American politician from the state of West Virginia. He was a member of the West Virginia Senate for the 1st district. Ferns was defeated for reelection in 2018 by Democratic candidate William J. Ihlenfeld II. [1]
Ferns was first elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 2010,as a member of the Democratic Party.
On April 20,2012,he was arrested for drunken driving in Wheeling,Virginia. On April 23,2012,he entered a guilty plea and paid a $500 fine. Ferns' blood-alcohol level was 0.22,nearly three times West Virginia's legal limit. [2] That year,he was reelected by 280 votes. He switched his allegiance to the Republican Party in November 2013.
In 2014,he challenged Democrat Rocky Fitzsimmons in an election to the West Virginia Senate. Ferns narrowly defeated Fitzsimmons. He was chosen as the West Virginia Senate Majority Leader in December 2016. [3]
In 2018,Ferns was defeated for reelection by former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia William J. Ihlenfeld II.

The West Virginia Republican Party is the affiliate of the United States Republican Party in West Virginia. Elgine McArdle is the party chair. It is currently the dominant party in the state,and is one of the strongest affiliates of the national Republican Party. It controls both of West Virginia's U.S. House seats,one of the U.S. Senate seats,the governorship,and has supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature.
The 2012 United States Senate election in West Virginia was held on November 6,2012,to elect one of West Virginia's two members of the U.S. Senate for a six-year term. In a rematch of the 2010 special election,incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Joe Manchin won re-election to a first full term against the Republican nominee,John Raese. Notably,Manchin outperformed Barack Obama in the concurrent presidential election by 25.06 percentage points in vote share,and by 50.86 percentage points on margin.

Rupert W. "Rupie" Phillips,Jr. is an American politician and a Republican member of the West Virginia Senate since 2020. Prior to his election to the Senate,he served in the West Virginia House of Delegates representing the 19th and 24th Districts from 2011 to 2019.
Randal "Randy" Duane Swartzmiller is an American politician and a former Democratic member of the West Virginia House of Delegates representing the 1st district from 2000 until his defeat for re-election in 2014. Swartzmiller again served in the House of Delegates from 2018 to 2020,when he left to be an unsuccessful candidate for the West Virginia Senate.
Mitchell Carmichael is an American politician. He is a former Republican member of the West Virginia Senate representing District 4 from 2012 until his defeat in 2020. Prior to his service in the Senate,Carmichael served in the West Virginia House of Delegates representing District 12 from 2000 through 2012. Carmichael was also a candidate for Governor of West Virginia in the 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial special election. As President of the state Senate from January 2017 to January 2021,he held the title Lieutenant Governor of West Virginia. After his defeat in 2020,Governor Jim Justice appointed Carmichael as West Virginia's economic development director.
Craig Philip Blair is an American politician and a Republican member of the West Virginia Senate representing District 15 since January 12,2013. Blair served non-consecutively in the West Virginia Legislature from January 2003 until January 2011 in the West Virginia House of Delegates in the District 52 seat. Blair is also the father of former WV Delegate Saira Blair.
Robert D. Beach is an American politician and a Democratic member of the West Virginia State Senate representing District 13 since January 2011. Beach was also the Democratic nominee for West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture in 2020. Beach served consecutively in the West Virginia Legislature's House of Delegates from January 2001 until January 2011,and non-consecutively from his May 1998 appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the passing of his father,the late Delegate Robert C.
