São José [2] ("Saint Joseph") is a bairro in the District of Sede in the municipality of Santa Maria, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is located in east Santa Maria.
A bairro is a Portuguese word for a quarter or a neighborhood or, sometimes, a district within a city or town. It is commonly used in Brazil, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking places. Bairro is cognate with Germanic berg, burg, borg, burgh, borough etc, and Spanish barrio, all of which descend from the same Proto-Indo European root.
Sede ("Seat") is a district of the municipality of Santa Maria, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is situated in the north portion of Santa Maria. Downtown Santa Maria is one of its bairros (neighbourhoods).
