SBI Youth for India (SBI YFI) is an Indian rural fellowship programme initiated, funded and managed by the State Bank of India (SBI) in partnership with non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Fellows work with the NGOs on grassroot development projects.

Contents

The goal of the fellowship is to introduce social entrepreneurship and the social sector to youth. [3]

History

The SBI Youth for India Fellowship was launched on 1 March 2011, in partnership with three NGOs: M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, BAIF Development Research Foundation and Seva Mandir. [4]

The program has been recognised by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (ex-President of India), [5] Ratan Tata (chairman, Tata Group), [4] Duvvuri Subbarao (Governor, Reserve Bank of India), O. P. Bhatt (Chairman, State Bank of India), and M. S. Swaminathan (the proponent of the Green Revolution in India) [6] amongst others.

The fellows work on projects in 12 thematic program areas: education, food security, environmental protection, health, alternative energy, rural livelihoods, traditional crafts, self-governance, social entrepreneurship, women's empowerment, water, and technology. [7]

During its history, SBI YFI fellows have come from the following countries: [8]

Fellows

Fellows range between 21–32 years of age, and are all graduates or postgraduates. Most have an engineering or management background. Fellows have worked in sectors such as information technology, education, infrastructure, non-profit, and healthcare, [9] and at organisations such as Tata Group, Cap Gemini, IBM, [10] and Mindtree. [4]

The flagship batch of the fellowship had 27 fellows [6] who worked for a year on various projects in the areas of agricultural supply chain and linkages, education, public policy and awareness, rural tourism, tribal development and environment in eight states and union territories (namely, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala, Orissa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry). The SBI YFI Conclave is a 2-day program that includes partner NGO meetings, showcasing the work of alumni, panel discussions, and networking. [12]

Seva Mandir is an Indian grassroot NGO based in Udaipur, in Rajasthan state, founded by Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta in 1968. Seva Mandir works mainly in natural resource development and sustainability, village development, women empowerment, education and health care, continuing education, and children's welfare.

Om Prakash Bhatt is an Indian banker and was the Chairman of State Bank of India from June 2006 until 31 March 2011 Presently, he is an independent director on the board of the 'Maharatna' Central Public Sector Enterprise - Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC), Tata Steel Ltd and also Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL). On 25 November 2016 he was made interim chairman of TATA Steel, replacing Cyrus Mistry. He continues as an independent director after N. Chandrasekaran took over as Chairman in 2017. The Supreme Court appointed him member of a committee to investigate issues arising out of US short-seller Hindenburg's report on the Adani Group on 2 March 2023.

Dr. Ramaswami Balasubramaniam is a development scholar, author, public policy advocate, leadership trainer known for his pioneering development work with rural and tribal people in Saragur and Heggadadevana kote Taluks of Mysuru in Karnataka, India. He founded Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), a development organization based in Saragur when he was 19. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Grassroots Research And Advocacy Movement (GRAAM), a public policy think tank based out of Mysuru. After spending 26 years in development work among rural and tribal people, he pursued academic degrees in leadership, organisational development and public policy. He was the Frank T Rhodes professor at Cornell University between 2012 and 2014, and continues to hold academic positions in Cornell and other universities. His books 'Voices from the Grassroots' and 'I, the citizen' are compilation of narratives and reflections of a development expert and are now globally acclaimed. His book I, the citizen was released in 2015 by the Prime Minister's office.

S M Sehgal Foundation is an Indian NGO focused on rural development with its head office in Gurugram, Haryana. It was founded as an Indian public, charitable trust in 1999 by plant geneticist Suri Sehgal and his wife Mrs. Edda Sehgal, who together had accumulated wealth through the 1998 sale of their hybrid seed businesses, Proagro Group.

Madan Padaki is an Indian entrepreneur and business executive. He is the co-founder and director of Sylvant Advisors, in the field of education management; CEO and MD of Head Held High Services, a social enterprise for rural youth, and former co-founder of MeritTrac Services, a skill assessment and testing company. Padaki holds an undergraduate degree in engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore and an MBA from S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research. In 2011, he was conferred The Young Education Leader Award by EDGE Forum – a forum of leading educationists and educational institutions in India.

Neelam Pol is an entrepreneur and founder of Khel Planet Foundation. She is a Harvard University alumna and lives in Mumbai.

SBI General Insurance Company Limited is a general insurance company founded in 2009. It started operations in 2010 and is headquartered in Mumbai, India.

Shobha Gosa is a Women's activist and leadership developer, espousing the movement among youth towards women empowerment through sustained education. She is also a person with interfaith understanding, who has also contributed papers.

Aadiwasi Janjagruti is an initiative by Ulgulan for Social Change Foundation, which is working on Social Justice, awareness, and entitlements in Dhadgaon block of Nandurbar Maharashtra through mobile video films. It allows tribal people to highlight their issues in Pawari, Bhilori and Aahrani language by using citizen Journalism. Initially started in Dhadgaon block of Nandurbar districts it now working for entire districts.
