SS Creekirk was a cargo steamship that was built in Scotland in 1912 and sunk with all hands by a German submarine in 1940. At her launch in 1912 she was named SS Mariston. In her 28-year career she was renamed SS Milcovul in 1913, SS Hyphaestos in 1933 and SS Creekirk in 1938. [1]
Robert Duncan and Company of Port Glasgow built the ship for W.S. Miller's Ellaston Steam Ship Company [5] of Glasgow and completed her as Mariston in 1912. [1] She had six corrugated furnaces with a combined grate area of 130 square feet (12 m2) that heated two 180 lbf/in2 single-ended boilers with a combined heating surface of 5,384 square feet (500 m2). [1] These fed one three-cylinder triple-expansion steam engine built by Rankin and Blackmore of Greenock. [1] Her engine drove a single screw and was rated at 338 NHP. [1]
In 1913 Mariston's owners sold her to Romania Prima Naţională de Navigație Maritimă, [5] who renamed her Milcovul and registered her in Brăila [2] on the River Danube. In August 1916 Romania entered the First World War, and by the end of the year Milcovul had been requisitioned as a transport ship for the Imperial Russian Navy. [5] In 1918 German Empire forces captured her but that November the Central Powers conceded defeat to the Entente Powers and Milcovul's owners recovered her. [5]
Milcovul was in Romania Prima Naţională de Navigație Maritimă's fleet for two decades. When the Russian émigré Alexandre Vlasov took over the company in 1933, Milcovul was sold to Ant. G. Yannoulatos and Sons, who renamed her Hyphaestos and registered her in Piraeus. [3] Yannoulatos ran Hyphaestos for five years and then sold her in 1938 to the Cree Steam Ship Company Ltd of London. [1] Cree renamed the ship Creekirk, registered her in London and appointed Muir, Young Ltd to manage her. [1]
In autumn 1940 Creekirk loaded 5,900 tons of iron ore at Wabana and Conception Bay in Newfoundland and then sailed to Sydney, Nova Scotia. [4] There she joined Convoy SC 7, which on 5 October sailed for Liverpool. Creekirk was typical of SC 7's 35 merchant ships: old, slow (one source says she could manage only 8.5 knots (15.7 km/h)) [6] and vulnerable. Creekirk had only one DEMS professional military gunner: [4] her armament would have been operated largely by members of her own Merchant Navy crew. At first the convoy had but one escort ship, the Hastings-class sloop HMS Scarborough.
On 16 October a wolf pack of U-boats found SC 7 and quickly overwhelmed its inadequate defences. The attack continued for several days, and on 18 October it intensified as the number of U-boats increased. At 2112 hrs Creekirk was in the Western Approaches northwest of Rockall when Fritz Frauenheim's U-101 torpedoed her. [4] She sank quickly with the loss of all hands: her Master Elie Robilliard, 34 crew and her one DEMS gunner. [4]
The Greek Ship is the nickname of a cargo steamship, Khoula F, that has been beached on the southwest coast of Kish Island, Iran, since 1966. She was built in 1943 by the British shipyard of William Hamilton and Company in Port Glasgow, Scotland, under the name Empire Trumpet. From 1946 to 1966, she passed through a series of British and Iranian owners and various changes of name. Her final owners were Greek.
SS Assyrian was a cargo ship that was built in Hamburg for German owners in 1914, transferred to British owners in 1920 as war reparations and sunk by a U-boat in 1940. She was launched as MS Fritz, and when she changed owners in 1920 she was renamed MS Assyrian. She had been built as a motor ship but in 1925 she was converted to a steamship and became SS Assyrian.
SS Soesterberg was a Dutch-owned cargo steamship that was built in Belgium in 1927 and sunk by a U-boat in 1940 in the Battle of the Atlantic.
SS Fiscus was a UK cargo steamship that was built in 1928, served in the Second World War and was sunk by a U-boat in 1940.

SS Primrose Hill was a British CAM ship that saw action in World War II, armed with a catapult on her bow to launch a Hawker Sea Hurricane. She was completed by William Hamilton & Co in Port Glasgow on the Firth of Clyde in September 1941.
SS Empire Tower was a British 4,378 GRT cargo ship built in 1935 and sunk by enemy action in 1943.

SS Yoma was a British passenger liner that served as a troop ship in the Second World War. She was built in Scotland in 1928, and from then until 1940 Yoma ran a regular route between Glasgow in Scotland and Rangoon in Burma via Liverpool, Palma, Marseille and Egypt. She became a troop ship in 1941 and was sunk with great loss of life in the Mediterranean in 1943.
SS Hertford was a refrigerated cargo steamship that was launched in Germany in 1917, seized by the United Kingdom in 1920 as World War I reparations, and sunk by a U-boat in 1942 with the loss of four members of her crew.
SS Clan Macarthur was a British refrigerated cargo steamship. She was built for Cayzer, Irvine and Company's Clan Line Steamers Ltd as one of its Cameron-class steamships. She was launched in Greenock in 1936 and sunk in the Indian Ocean by enemy action in August 1943.
SS Loreto, formerly Astrée, was a 1,069 GRT cargo steamship that was built in England in 1912 for French owners and bought in 1933 by Italian owners who renamed her Loreto. In 1942 a Royal Navy submarine sank her in the Tyrrhenian Sea, killing 130 British Indian Army prisoners of war who were aboard.

SS Blitar was a Dutch cargo steamship that was launched in Rotterdam in 1922 and sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1943. She is notable for having fought off three u-boats in succession for nearly ten hours before U-632 finally managed to sink her. 26 of Blitar's complement were killed.
