The SS Harry Luckenbach, built as a cargo ship ordered by the Luckenbach Steamship Company and built at Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1919. The as yet unnamed ship was requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) before completion and converted to a troop transport. The USSB allocated the ship, which had been fitted out with temporary troop accommodation in its cargo spaces, to the Navy which commissioned the ship on 7 July 1919 as USS Sol Navis with the Identification number 4031A. The ship was decommissioned October 1919 after two trips to France.
In 1920 Luckenbach Steamship purchased the ship and operated it commercially as Harry Luckenbach in intercoastal trade. In April 1942 the ship was turned over to the War Shipping Administration (WSA) with the company assigned as the WSA operating agent. On 17 March 1943 she was sunk by Uboat U-91 with loss of all eighty persons aboard.
The yet unnamed ship was the last of four sister ships ordered by the Luckenbach Steamship Company from the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Chester, Pennsylvania. [note 1] The United States Shipping Board (USSB) requisitioned all merchant ships under construction or on order in American shipyards for emergency World War I service on 3 August 1917. Yard hull number 10 was launched on 9 February 1919, completed in July 1919 as Sol Navis, U.S. Official Number 218157 and delivered to the USSB on 7 July 1919. [5] [6] The USSB assigned the ship to the U.S. Navy which on delivery 7 July 1919 commissioned the ship as Sol Navis with the Identification Number 4031A. [6]
Sol Navis was registered as a freighter with signal LRHP at 8,713 GRT, 5,489 NRT, 448.9 ft (136.8 m) registry length, 60.2 ft (18.3 m) beam and 28.2 ft (8.6 m) depth, 5,000 i.h.p., a crew of 50 at Philadelphia. [1] The 1920 Lloyd's Register of Ships shows the same tonnage with additional information of two steel decks with shelter deck, 37.8 ft (11.5 m) depth to main deck, four boilers and four geared turbines driving twin screws and owner USSB. [2]
Sol Navis had been fitted out with temporary troop accommodations and was assigned to the Cruiser and Transport Force assigned to bring soldiers home from Europe at the end of World War I. The ship departed Philadelphia on 12 July 1919 for Brest, France arriving and anchoring in the harbor on 23 July 1919. Troops were ferried to the anchored ship which departed 13 August with 30 Army officers and 846 enlisted men arriving at the Hoboken Port of Embarkation on 23 August. The ship made a second trip, departing Hoboken 4 September 1919 and anchoring at Brest 13 September. After embarking 67 officers, 1,699 soldiers, one civilian and 100 Sailors for a total of 1,867 passengers on 16 September the ship sailed arriving at the Port of Embarkation's Bush Terminal [note 2] in Brooklyn on 26 September after a night at the quarantine anchorage off Staten Island. [6]
Sol Navis was put into drydock for repairs at Robins Dry Dock and Repair Company, Erie Basin, Brooklyn on 9 October 1919. Having completed he mission the Navy decommissioned her on 22 October 1919. [6] [7] There had been some intent to transfer the ship to the War Department (Army) but the ship was immediately returned to the USSB upon decommissioning. [8]
In 1920 the Luckenbach Steamship Company purchased the ship from the USSB renaming the ship Harry Luckenbach operating it commercially until sunk in World War II. [6]
Schedules during the 1930s show the ship, along with many other of the line's ships on an intercoastal service between Boston and Seattle with port calls at cites between those locations. [9] In April 1941 the line announced a number of its ships would be diverted, alternately, from the intercoastal routes to Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, Penang and the Dutch East Indies to "assist in the movement of essential foreign commodities.” While on those voyages the ships would be under charter to American President Lines. Harry Luckenbach was the second ship to be so diverted scheduled to leave San Pedro, California on 26 May 1941. [10]
The company turned the ship over to the War Shipping Administration (WSA) at Mobile, Alabama on 20 April 1942. WSA retained Luckenbach Steamship Company as its operating agent with operations under a WSA/Army Transportation Corps Agreement (TCA). [11]
Harry Luckenbach was in Convoy HX-229, assigned station #111, from New York City to the United Kingdom. That station, leading the left column, [note 3] was considered exposed and the ship had to be recalled to the position when the master independently zig-zagged ahead of the convoy. The ship was hit early in the morning of 17 March 1943 about 400 nmi (460 mi; 740 km) off of Cape Farewell, Greenland ( 50°38′N34°46′W / 50.633°N 34.767°W ) by torpedoes fired by German submarine U-91 midship on her starboard side in the machinery room. The ship sank in about 3 minutes and survivors were sighted. HMS Pennywort had already picked up 108 survivors and could not take on more. HMS Anemone was ordered to find and rescue the survivors but failed to find them. The entire crew of 54 seaman and 26 Naval Armed Guard were lost. [6] [4]
In November 1949 the C3-S-A2 ship Sea Devil built by Western Steel, San Francisco, in 1943 was purchased by Luckenbach Steamship Company and renamed Harry Luckenbach. That ship, sold in 1959, was scrapped in 1973 as Copper State. [12]
SS Absaroka was a steamer, named after the Absaroka Range of mountains in Montana and Wyoming, completed in February 1918 for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) which briefly operated the ship. From 17 September 1918 to 4 March 1919 the ship was commissioned as USS Absaroka with the identification number IX-2581 in United States Navy and operated by the Naval Overseas Transportation Service.
USS Mizar (AF-12) was the United Fruit Company fruit, mail and passenger liner Quirigua that served as a United States Navy Mizar-class stores ship in World War II.
USS Merak (AF-21), the second Navy ship of the name, was the United Fruit Company cargo and passenger liner Veragua that served as a United States Navy Mizar-class stores ship in World War II.
John L. Clem was built as the cargo and passenger liner Santa Ana for W. R. Grace and Company for service in Grace Line's South American service but was requisitioned before completion by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) in 1918 due to World War I. The ship was chartered back to Grace after completion until turned over to the United States Navy to be briefly commissioned as the troop transport USS Santa Ana (ID-2869) from 11 February 1919 to 21 July 1919.
USAT Thomas H. Barry, formerly SS Oriente, was a Ward Line ocean liner that became a United States Army troopship in the Second World War. She was intended for transfer to the United States Navy and assigned the hull number AP-45, but was not transferred and remained with the Army.
Empire Bittern was a steamship, built as a livestock-carrying cargo ship in 1902 at Belfast, Ireland as Iowa for the White Diamond Steamship Company Ltd of Liverpool. The ship was sold to the Hamburg America Line and renamed Bohemia in 1913.
SS Point Bonita was constructed in 1918 and launched 27 March 1918 after a hull being built for foreign owners at Albina Engine and Machine Works was requisitioned during World War I by the United States Shipping Board (USSB). The ship saw service as the Navy transport USS Point Bonita, assigned Identification Number 3496, from 7 October 1918 to 7 April 1919, was returned to the USSB and saw civilian service with several commercial companies as San Pedro and Oliver Olson before again seeing service in World War II as USS Camanga (AG-42). After return to commercial service as Oliver Olson the ship was wrecked at the entrance to Bandon harbor in Oregon.
USS Majaba (AG-43/IX-102) was the Design 1049 cargo ship Meriden built in 1919 by the Albina Engine & Machine Works, Portland, Oregon. All the ships were requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) for World War I service. The ship was bought by the E. K. Wood Lumber Co., of San Francisco, California in 1923 and renamed El Capitan. The ship was chartered by the U.S. Navy through the War Shipping Administration (WSA) in April 1942 and commissioned as Majaba.
USS Tuluran (AG-46) was under construction for the British at the Toledo Shipbuilding Company as the cargo ship War Bayonet in 1917 when requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) for World War I service. The ship was launched and completed as Lake Superior. The Navy acquired the ship from the USSB with assignment to the Naval Overseas Transport Service (NOTS) with the identification number ID-2995. The ship was returned to the USSB which sold the vessel in 1926. The ship was renamed C. D. Johnston III and that vessel operated out of Oregon until again sold and based in San Francisco. Another sale resulted in the vessel being renamed Anna Shafer which was acquired by the War Shipping Administration (WSA) in 1942 and allocated to the Navy for World War II service.
USS Besboro (AG-66) was built as Caddopeak, a United States Shipping Board (USSB) Emergency Fleet Corporation Design 1049 cargo ship built by Albina Engine & Machine Works, launched 18 October 1918. From 1922 Caddopeak served several commercial shipping companies until sold in 1937 to Burns Steamship Company and renamed Lurline Burns. On 2 February 1942 the ship was delivered to the War Shipping Administration, allocated to the United States Army and operated by Burns and Alaska Steamship Company under an Army charter agreement.
SS Edward Luckenbach was the first of five new cargo ships to be built for the Luckenbach Steamship Company by Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship was launched in September 1916, delivered in November and briefly operated as such before being requisitioned for World War I service. The ship was one of the cargo vessels in the first large convoy transporting U.S. Army forces to France. After that convoy the ship served as a U.S. Army Chartered Transport (USACT) until converted by the Army to a troop ship and turned over to the Navy a few months before the war's end. The Navy commissioned the ship as USS Edward Luckenbach assigning the miscellaneous identification number ID-1662 in August 1918. The transport made one wartime voyage with continued voyages returning the Army to the U.S. until August 1919.
El Capitan, United States Official Number 285587, was built in 1917 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company at Newport News, Virginia for the Southern Pacific Company's Atlantic Steamship Lines. In 1915 the line operated from the North River piers 49–52 at the foot of 11th Street in New York to New Orleans under the flag and name of Morgan Line, which combined with the Southern Pacific's rail service from the Pacific Coast was known as the Sunset Gulf Route. During World War I the ship was purchased from the builder before delivery to the owner by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) which later turned the ship over to the United States Navy which placed her in commission as USS El Capitan (ID-1407) from 1918 to 1919. El Capitan was returned to commercial service by the Southern Pacific Company until just before the United States entry into World War II when the United States War Shipping Administration (WSA) acquired the ship, changed her registry to Panama and placed her in operation under its agent, United States Lines. El Capitan was in the Arctic convoy PQ 17 to the Soviet Union when she came under air attack on 9 July 1942, was damaged and abandoned to be sunk by torpedo just after midnight on 10 July.
USS Chestnut Hill (ID-2526) was a commercial tanker that served briefly with the United States Navy during World War I. The ship was ordered as Desdemona for British service but requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board (USSB) for U.S. service and renamed Chestnut Hill before completion. After commissioning and assignment to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS) the ship served as an escort and fueling ship for fleets of U.S. submarine chasers crossing the Atlantic.
SS Sea Marlin was a C3-S-A2 cargo ship operated for the War Shipping Administration (WSA) by Grace Lines during World War II. WSA allocated Sea Marlin to United States Army requirements. Sea Marlin was crewed by United States Merchant Marines, with a contingent of the US Naval Armed Guards for the guns and had a complement of the US Army Transportation Corps aboard for troop administration.
SS Antigua was a United Fruit Company passenger and refrigerated cargo liner completed as one of six nearly identical vessels, three built by Newport News Shipbuilding and three by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, for operation by the company's subsidiary the United Mail Steamship Company. The ship was the first of the ships built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts.
Portmar was a United States-flagged merchant vessel that was constructed in response to World War I, operated by a succession of companies in the interwar period, then taken up for wartime shipping in World War II.
Corvus was a steam cargo ship built in 1919 by Columbia River Shipbuilding Company of Portland for the United States Shipping Board as part of the wartime shipbuilding program of the Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) to restore the nation's Merchant Marine. The freighter was operated on international and domestic routes through 1944. Early in 1945 she was transferred to Soviet Union as part of lend-lease program and renamed Uzbekistan. After several months of operation, the freighter was rammed by another vessel on 31 May 1945 and was beached to avoid sinking. She was subsequently raised and towed to Portland where she was scrapped in 1946.
West Mingo was a Design 1013 cargo ship built in 1919 by the Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co of Los Angeles. She was one of many ships built by the company for the United States Shipping Board.
USS Radnor (ID-3023) was a cargo ship and later troop transport that served with the United States Navy in 1918–19, during and shortly after World War I. The ship later went into merchant service, and in 1948 under Chinese ownership reportedly became the first all-Chinese ship to visit South America. Radnor was originally ordered as SS War Indian by a private company, but with U.S. entry into World War I in April 1917, she was requisitioned by the U.S. Navy for use as a cargo ship. Commissioned as USS Radnor (ID-3023) in May 1918, the ship spent the remainder of the war transporting cargoes for the Navy. After the war, USS Radnor was converted into a troop transport and used to repatriate U.S. troops home from France.
