Major General Saidu Ayodele Balogun Listen (born 20 April 1941),is a retired Nigerian general who appointed the first Governor of Ogun State,Nigeria after it was formed from part of the old Western State in March 1976,holding office until July 1978 during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. Balogun was an infantry brigade commander at the time of the coup in July 1975 when General Yakubu Gowon was ousted by general Murtala Mohammed. [4] When appointed governor of the newly created Ogun State by Murtala Mohammed's successor,Olusegun Obasanjo,he faced various problems such as finding accommodation for government workers,who at first had to commute from Ibadan in the new Oyo State to Abeokuta,although by the end of his term of office most had found local accommodations. The Government offices were mostly rented at first. [5] He established the Ogun State School of Health Technology of Ilese-Ijebu,at first on a temporary site. [6] [7]
Murtala Ramat Muhammed was a Nigerian general who led the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup in overthrowing the Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi military regime and featured prominently during the Nigerian Civil War and thereafter ruled over Nigeria from 29 July 1975 until his assassination on 13 February 1976. This period in Nigerian history,from the Northern counter-coup victory to Murtala's death,is commonly associated with the institutionalization of the military in politics.
Yakubu Dan-Yumma "Jack" Gowon is a retired Nigerian army general and military leader. Muktar Muhammed was the military governor of Kaduna State,Nigeria from July 1978 to October 1979 during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. Wing commander Muktar Muhammed played an active role in the coup that brought General Murtala Mohammed to power,and was appointed to the new Supreme Military Council on 30 July 1975. He was appointed governor of Kaduna State in 1977,in which position he was promoted to Group Captain. He retired from the Service of the Nigerian Air Force at the rank of Air Vice Marshal (AVM).
General Murtala Muhammed became head of state in Nigeria on 29 July 1975,when he assumed power after a coup that deposed General Yakubu Gowon. On assuming office,he replaced the military governors of the twelve states that had been appointed by his predecessor. On 13 February 1976 he was assassinated in an attempted coup,and replaced by General Olusegun Obasanjo,who replaced most of his appointees.
The 1975 Nigerian coup d'état was a bloodless military coup which took place in Nigeria on 29 July 1975 when a faction of junior Armed Forces officers overthrew General Yakubu Gowon. Colonel Joseph Nanven Garba announced the coup in a broadcast on Radio Nigeria. At the time of the coup,Gowon was attending the 12th Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Summit in Kampala,Uganda. The coup plotters appointed Brigadier Murtala Mohammed as head of state,and Brigadier Olusegun Obasanjo as his deputy. The coup was motivated by unhappiness of junior officers at the lack of progress Gowon had made in moving the country towards democratic rule,while Garba's role as an insider is credited with ensuring that the coup was bloodless.
