Samir Kumar Mohanty is an Indian politician from the state of Jharkhand who is a Member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, representing the Baharagora constituency. A member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party, he was elected in the 2019 Jharkhand election by 60565 votes. [1]

Education

Samir did his primary schooling in his native village Bend, Chakulia and Matriculation from local Manoharlal Governmental High School and later graduated from Ghatshila College, Ghatshila. [2]

Career

Mohanty started his political career with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, contesting the 2014 elections on a JVM ticket from the Baharagora assembly seat in Jharkhand. After the elections, he joined the BJP. In 2019, Mohanty rejoined the JMM, describing his return as a "homecoming" after "14 years of exile". [3]

Constituency

Baharagora is the trijunction of Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, and is one of the most literate blocks of Jharkhand. Baharagora is called the rice bowl of the state with maximum paddy production in Jharkhand. Baharagora has many tourist sites, such as Chitreshwar Siva temple and Pahari Mandir Ichrashole. [4]

He was the Member of Parliament in 12th, 13th 14th and 15th Lok Sabha from Jharkhand. He was the Union State Minister (MoS) for Forests & Environment of India in the BJP – led National Democratic Alliance Government in 1998 to 2000. He was appointed as Jharkhand BJP president on 04 July 2023.

He represents Barhait constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly since 2014 and from Dumka from 2019 to 2020 and from 2009 to 2014. He was also the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2010 to 2013, leader of the opposition, Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from 2014 to 2019 and member of Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand from 2009 to 2010.
