Legislative Assembly elections were held in Jharkhand, India, from 30 November to 20 December 2019 to elect the 81 members of the 5th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. Results were declared on 23 December 2019. The pre-election term of the Assembly was set to end on 27 December 2019. [1] [2]

Government formation

After the defeat of the incumbent BJP government, incumbent Chief Minister Raghubar Das tendered his resignation from the post. He tendered his resignation to Governor Draupadi Murmu.

In the evening, during the election results, JMM leader and Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren addressed the media and thanked the people of Jharkhand for the mandate. He also expressed his gratitude to his alliance partners, Congress & RJD and their president, Sonia Gandhi & Lalu Prasad Yadav respectively.

The next day on 24 December 2019, the meeting of all the 30 JMM MLAs was called, in which Hemant Soren was elected as the leader of the JMM legislature group. Hemant Soren was already the leader and Chief Ministerial candidate of the UPA during the election campaign. On the very same day, Alamgir Alam was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP).

After the elections, JVM(P) chief and Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi extended the support of his party to the Hemant Soren government, thus providing more strength to the government.

On 24 December 2019, Hemant Soren along with the alliance partners, met Governor Draupadi Murmu and staked claim to form the government.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is a political party in the Indian state of Jharkhand which was founded by Binod Bihari Mahato. It has one seat in the 17th Lok Sabha. Shibu Soren is the president of the JMM. JMM is also an influential political party in the state of Odisha and parts of neighbouring of states. Its election symbol for Jharkhand is Bow and Arrow.

Madhu Koda is an Indian politician who had served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2006 to 2008. He was sworn in as the fifth Chief Minister of Jharkhand on 18 September 2006, and remained in office until he resigned on 27 August 2008.

Chandra Shekhar Dubey also known as Dadai Dubey was a Cabinet minister in Jharkhand government. He was an elected MLA of Bishrampur. Dadai Dubey is a member of the Indian National Congress political party. Chandrashekhar Dubey was also member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India. He represented the Dhanbad constituency of Jharkhand. Chandrashekhar Dubey was made the state rural development minister in Jharkhand in Hemant Soren government in August 2013. Dubey was also the general secretary of Rashtiya Koyla Mazdoor Sangh affiliated to INTUC. Chandrashekhar Dubey was also a senate member of Nilamber Pitamber University, nominated by Hon'ble Speaker of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. In July 2015, Dadai Dubey was arrested for misbehaving with the police and was sent to judicial custody.

Babulal Marandi is an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand and formerly Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. He was the founder and national President of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik). He was the Member of Parliament in 12th, 13th 14th and 15th Lok Sabha from Jharkhand. He was the Union State Minister (MoS) for Forests & Environment of India in the BJP – led National Democratic Alliance Government in 1998 to 2000. He was appointed as Jharkhand BJP president on 04 July 2023.

Hemant Soren is an Indian politician from Jharkhand, who is 5th and current Chief Minister of Jharkhand since 2019 and from 2013 to 2014. He is also the working president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a political party in Jharkhand. He represents Barhait constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly since 2014 and from Dumka from 2019 to 2020 and from 2009 to 2014. He was also the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2010 to 2013, leader of the opposition, Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from 2014 to 2019 and member of Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand from 2009 to 2010.

The Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, commonly known as the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha is the unicameral state legislature of Jharkhand.

Haji Hussain Ansari was an Indian politician and a leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He served as Minister of Minority Welfare and Registration Department in the Government of Jharkhand since 28 January 2020. Ansari was the first and only Muslim to become minister in the state of Jharkhand. He was elected to the Jharkhand Assembly on the JMM ticket four times from Madhupur Assembly constituency in 1995, 2000, 2009 and 2019 respectively. He also acted as the leader of the opposition in 2004.

Droupadi Murmu is an Indian politician and former teacher who is serving as the 15th and current President of India since 2022. She won the 2022 presidential election as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is the first person belonging to the tribal community and also the second woman after Pratibha Patil to hold the office. She is also the youngest person to occupy the post and the first President born in an independent India.

On 4 February 2008 a by-election was held in for the Simaria (SC) seat of the Legislative Assembly of the Indian state of Jharkhand. The by-election was called after the death of the sitting MLA Upendra Nath Das.

He is member of Jharkhand legislative assembly from Chandankiyari constituency which is reserved for scheduled castes in Bokaro District.
