He served as a member of the National Executive of the CPI as well as president for the Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union. He was also a Punjab State Executive member of CPI. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1971 and 1999 from the Bhatinda seat. He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly twice as well.
