Mahagathbandhan, also known as Grand Alliance is a coalition of political parties in the Eastern state of Jharkhand in India. It is the major political alliance in Jharkhand.

The alliance consists of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Indian National Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation.

History

2018

To fight the incumbent BJP government in the state and in national level the four major state party JMM, Congress, JVM(P), RJD joined hands to form a united opposition in the state under the leadership of JMM in state election and INC in national election called the Mahagathbandhan.

2019 Lok Sabha elections

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P), Rashtriya Janata Dal fought the 2019 Lok Sabha election under the banner of UPA/MGB and contested the elections for 14 Seats in Jharkhand. Congress contested on 7 seats, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha contested on 4 seats, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) contested on 2 seats, Rashtriya Janata Dal contested on 1 seat. The results were announced on 23 May 2019. The Congress won from Singhbhum Seat and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won from Rajmahal Seat. After the elections Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) left the alliance [6]

2019 Jharkhand Assembly election

In Jharkhand Assembly Election, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha contested on 43 Seats, Congress contested on 31 Seats, Rashtriya Janata Dal contested on 7 Seats. [7]

After the defeat of the incumbent BJP government, incumbent Chief Minister Raghubar Das tendered his resignation from the post to Governor Draupadi Murmu.

In the evening, during the election results, JMM leader and Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren addressed the media and thanked the people of Jharkhand for the mandate. He also expressed his gratitude to his alliance partners, Congress & RJD and their president, Sonia Gandhi & Lalu Prasad Yadav respectively.

Next day on 24 December 2019, the meeting of all the 30 JMM MLAs was called, in which Hemant Soren was elected as the leader of the JMM legislature group. Hemant Soren was already the leader and Chief Ministerial candidate of the UPA during the election campaign. On the very same day, Alamgir Alam was elected as the leader of the Congress in the Assembly [8]

After the elections, JVM(P) chief and Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Babulal Marandi extended the support of his party to the Hemant Soren government, thus providing more strength to the government. [9]

On 24 December 2019, Hemant Soren along with the alliance partners, met Governor Draupadi Murmu and staked claim to form the government. Thus, the Mahagathbandhan government came into existence in the Jharkhand.

2024 Elections

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal fought the 2024 Lok Sabha election and contested the elections for 14 Seats in Jharkhand. Congress contested on 7 seats, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha contested on 4 seats, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation and Rashtriya Janata Dal contested on 1 seat. The results were announced on 4 June 2024, the alliance won 5 seats.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation is a communist political party in India. The party is represented in Bihar and Jharkhand Legislative Assemblies. Since 2023, the party is also a member of the INDIA electoral alliance. In Bihar, the party has significant base amongst the Extremely Backward Castes and the Schedule Castes. It was successful in mobilising Upper Backward Caste groups such as Koeris in some districts of central Bihar, prior to the rise of Lalu Prasad Yadav. The party faced existential crisis when a large section of its Koeri and Yadav support base was defected to Rashtriya Janata Dal in 1990s. However, the ideological commitment of its cadre protected it from disintegration. It staged a comeback in politics after winning twelve seats in Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2020 and by sending two of its members to Lok Sabha in 2024 Indian general elections.

Shibu Soren is an Indian politician who is currently member of Rajya Sabha representing Jharkhand and the leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. He formerly served as 3rd Chief Minister of Jharkhand, first in 2005 for 10 days, then from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2009 to 2010. He is also the President of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) political party, a constituent of the INDIA Alliance. He was the member of Lok Sabha from Dumka from 1980 to 1984, 1989 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2019 and Minister for Coal in the Union Cabinet from 2004 to 2004, 2004 to 2005 and from 2006 to 2006, when a Delhi district court found him guilty in the murder of his private secretary Shashi Nath Jha in 1994. He has also been indicted in the past on other criminal charges.

He was the Union State Minister (MoS) for Forests & Environment of India in the BJP – led National Democratic Alliance Government in 1998 to 2000. Hemant Soren is an Indian politician from Jharkhand, who is currently serving as Chief Minister of Jharkhand since 4 July 2024. He also served as the 5th Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2019 to 2024 and from 2013 to 2014. He is also the working president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a political party in Jharkhand. He represents Barhait constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly since 2014 and has represented Dumka twice — from 2019 to 2020, and from 2009 to 2014. He was also the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2010 to 2013, Leader of the Opposition, Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from 2014 to 2019 and member of Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand, from 2009 to 2010.

In Indian politics, the Third Front refers to temporary alliances which began in 1989 among smaller parties to offer a third option to Indian voters. These alliances arose to challenge the Indian National Congress (INC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Elections for the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly were held in December 2009. It was a contest between three alliances The Indian National Congress (INC), The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and its major ally Janata Dal (United), and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The poll result was a shock for the incumbent BJP-JD(U) Alliance as they could muster only a quarter of the state assembly's 81 seats. The JMM emerged as a formidable force and finally turned out to be the kingmaker. The election turned out to be a stalemate as many expected because no major party or group was able to come even close to the 41-seat majority.

On 4 February 2008 a by-election was held in for the Simaria (SC) seat of the Legislative Assembly of the Indian state of Jharkhand. The by-election was called after the death of the sitting MLA Upendra Nath Das.

Jai Prakash Verma was a member of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from Gandey Assembly constituency.

Stephen Marandi was an Indian politician. He was a leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and a member of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. He was elected as pro tem speaker of the fourth Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. He is a tribal leader from Santhal Pargana.

Mahagathbandhan, also known as Grand Alliance, is a coalition of political parties in the Eastern state of Bihar in India, formed ahead of the 2015 Vidhan Sabha elections in Bihar. The alliance consists of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Indian National Congress (INC) and Left parties including Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation-CPIML (Liberation) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), with Tejashwi Yadav as the chairperson.

A number of political parties operate in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Some of them are organised nationally, and others within the region.

Elections in Jharkhand are being conducted since the formation of the state in 2000, to elect the members of Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha and to the members of the lower house of the Indian parliament, the Lok Sabha. There are 81 Vidhan Sabha constituencies and 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

Simon Marandi was an Indian politician. He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India from Rajmahal as a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha from 1989 to 1996.
