Sammanthurai Divisional Secretariat is a Divisional Secretariat of Ampara District, of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

Divisional Secretariats of Sri Lanka

The districts of Sri Lanka are divided into administrative sub-units known as divisional secretariats. These were originally based on the feudal counties, the korales and ratas. They were formerly known as 'D.R.O. Divisions' after the 'Divisional Revenue Officer'. Later the D.R.O.s became 'Assistant Government Agents' and the Divisions were known as 'A.G.A. Divisions'. Currently, the Divisions are administered by a 'Divisional Secretary', and are known as 'D.S. Divisions'.

Ampara District Administrative District in Eastern, Sri Lanka

Ampara District is one of the 25 districts of Sri Lanka, the second level administrative division of the country. The district is administered by a District Secretariat headed by a District Secretary appointed by the central government of Sri Lanka. The capital of the district is the town of Ampara. The district was carved out of the southern part of Batticaloa District in April 1961.

History

It was formed as a Divisional Registrar's office (DRO) in 1944. Mr.I.Mohaiyadeen was the first Divisional Registrar. And also it was upgraded as an Assistant Government Agent (AGA) office in 1972 and Mr.B.P.Tambinayaham was the first Assistant Government Agent. Thereafter it was changed as a Divisional Secretariat in 1993 and Mr.A.Mansoor was the first Divisional Secretary.

Location

Sammanthurai Divisional Secretariat is situated at 19 km east of Ampara town. It is boundary of North of Navithanveli Divisional Secretariat, South of Irakkamam Divisional Secretary's Division East of Karaitivu Divisional Secretary's Division and West of Ampara Urban Council.

Navithanveli Divisional Secretariat is a Divisional Secretariat of Ampara District, of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

Ampara Urban Council (AUC) is the local authority for the town of Ampara in eastern Sri Lanka. AUC is responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. It has 9 members elected using the open list proportional representation system.

Size and population

The total area of this division is about 132.8 squares kilo meters. Consists of 51 Grama Niladhari divisions. The population statistics report of 2010 shores 68591 members, this is made up of Muslims 85.22%, Tamils 14.49% Sinhalese 0.09% and others 02%, and over 64% of families are farmers. [1]

A Grama Niladhari is a Sri Lankan public official appointed by the central government to carry out administrative duties in a grama niladhari division, which is a sub-unit of a divisional secretariat. They come under the Grama Niladhari Division under the Home Affairs Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs. There are 14,022 grama niladhari divisions under 331 divisional secretary’s division in the island.

The village Addalaichenai was being part of Akkaripattu up to 1978 and then separated from Akkaraipattu.
