Samoa national under-21 netball team

The Samoa national under-21 netball team is the highest youth team of netball for Samoa and represents Samoa at the Netball World Youth Cup. It is controlled by the Samoa Netball Association.

History

In 2012 the team appointed Trish Wilcox as coach for the 2013 Youth World Championships. [1]

In September 2016 the team qualified for the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone, Botswana. [2] As preparation for the world cup the team also contested the Digicel Punjas International Youth Netball Series. [3] It announced its world cup team in May 2017 [4] coming eleventh. [5]

In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic forced cancellation of the Oceania qualifying tournament for the 2021 world cup, and Samoa qualified on the basis of its world ranking. [5] Head coach Frances Solia began "virtual trials" to select players. [5] In October 2020 it announced a 22-player "long squad" of potential players, from which the final 12-player squad would be selected. [6] The delay in the competition saw a new squad selected in January 2021. [7] The competition was subsequently cancelled due to the pandemic. [8] [9]

Rugby Samoa is the governing body of the sport of rugby union in Samoa. Founded as the Apia Rugby Union in 1924, it was affiliated to the New Zealand Rugby Football Union the same year. It joined the International Rugby Board as the Western Samoa Rugby Football Union in 1988. In 1997, when Western Samoa amended its constitution to change the country's name from Western Samoa to Samoa, the union also changed its name, and dropped the word football to become the Samoa Rugby Union. In November 2020, they changed their name to Lakapi Samoa which is Samoan for Rugby Samoa. They were formerly members of the Pacific Islands Rugby Alliance (PIRA) along with Fiji and Tonga. Prior to his move to Japan in 2011, he also had long stints with the Highlanders in Super Rugby and London Irish in the Aviva Premiership. He is currently the head coach of Manu Samoa having been appointed in 2020.

Vilimaina Davu is a former netball international who represented both Fiji and New Zealand. She was a prominent member of the New Zealand teams that were silver medallists at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and gold medallists at the 2003 World Netball Championships and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. However, she began and ended her international career with Fiji, representing them at the 1999 and 2007 World Netball Championships. During the Coca-Cola Cup/National Bank Cup era, she played for Canterbury Flames and Northern Force. During the early ANZ Championship era, she played for Northern Mystics. In 2022, she was included on a list of the 25 best players to feature in netball leagues in New Zealand since 1998.
