A.N.M Shamsul Islam (born 1 March 1957) [1] is a Bangladeshi politician. [2] He is a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-15 constituency. [1] At present he is the president of Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation. [3] He was the acting amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. [4]

Early life

He was born on 1 March 1957 in Chittagong District Under Satkania Upazila at Barodona Village. His father's name Mohammad Ali Miah and mother's name is Hafeza Amena Khatun. His father was a government employee and mother was a Hafez of the Quran. [3] He has 6 siblings.

Political and professional life

Shamsul Islam was closely connected to political and social activities from his student life. He was the elected president of Bangladesh Islami Chhattra Shibir, Chittagong North Zone, in 1978. He was the president of Chittagong University Zone of Bangladesh Islami Chhattra Shibir from October 1981 to September 1985. He was elected central secretary general of Bangladesh Islami Chhattra Shibir in 1985, and central president in 1987. [3]

He handled numerous social services and security programs beginning in 1989. Besides professional activities, he joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami . He was the elected Secretary of Chittagong city Zone of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He had to go to jail because of his movement against autocracy in 1999. He was the elected Ameer of Chittagong city Zone of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from 2000. He was elected as member of parliament in National election of 2008 at Chittagong-14 (Satkania-Lohagara) [3]

He is the candidate for Chittagong-15 (Satkania-Lohagara) in the national election of 30 December 2018. [5]

Imprisonment

He was sent to prison [6] for the conspiracy of government party three times in last few years. [7] [8] He spent more than two and half year in prison. [9]

Contribution

Shamsul Islam is the chairman of the board of trustees of International Islamic University, Chittagong, [10] and is now the senior vice chairman of the board of trustees of Chittagong International Medical College and Hospital.

Present activities

He is the president of Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation. [3] He was the acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam. [4]

Shah Ahmad Shafi was a Bangladeshi Sunni Islamic scholar, the chief of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Rector of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Hathazari and also the chairman of Bangladesh Qawmi Madrasah Education Board. He was born in 1930 in Rangunia, Chittagong and was educated at Hathazari Madrasah and Darul Uloom Deoband.

2012 Chirirbandar violence refers to the attack on the minority Hindu community by Islamic extremists in Chirirbandar Upazila of Dinajpur District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh on 4 August 2012.

On 5 January 2014, the 10th general elections were held in Bangladesh. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami had already boycotted the elections. The buildup to the elections were marred by successive strikes and violence by the opposition parties. Victims claimed after the polls, workers and supporters of the opposition parties began attacking the minority Bengali Hindus. Accusing of looting, vandalising and setting the Hindu houses on fire in several districts across the country. Seven persons belonging to the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party were arrested in connection with the attacks. The National Human Rights Commission held the government responsible for the attacks on Hindus after the election. In India, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the attacks on minorities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abdus Sobhan</span> Bangladeshi politician (1936–2020)

Maulana Muhammad Abdus Sobhan was a Bangladeshi politician. He was a member of the central working committee of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He was a two time elected parliamentarian from Pabna-5 constituency, during the elections of 1991 and 2001 respectively. He went to trial for his relationship with war crimes allegedly committed during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.

Shafiqur Rahman is a Bangladeshi politician, physician and current amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He served as Jamaat's secretary general from October 2016 to November 2019. He was elected the Jamaat-e-Islami Emir on November 12, 2019. He was former acting secretary general of the party. Before his being acting secretary general, he had been Ameer (leader) of the Sylhet city branch of the party.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mohammad Abu Bakr Siddique</span> Bengali Islamic scholar and Pir from Furfura Sharif

Moḥammad Abū Bakr Ṣiddīque al-Qurayshī was a Bengali Islamic scholar and the inaugural Pir of Furfura Sharif in West Bengal. He is regarded by his followers, who are scattered across eastern India and Bangladesh, as a mujaddid (reviver) of Islam in the region, due to his significant contributions in religious propagation via the establishment of mosques and madrasas, publication of newspapers and education development in neglected areas. He was the founding president of the sociopolitical Anjuman-i-Wazin-i-Bangla organisation, which advocated for causes such as the Khilafat Movement and Pakistan Movement. Siddique died in 1943, and his shrine is greatly venerated as one of West Bengal's most prominent Sufi centres.

Shamsuddin Qasemi was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, politician, author and educationist. He was the founding president of the Khatme Nabuwwat Andolan Council, former secretary-general of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, former principal of Jamia Madania Chittagong and Jamia Hussainia Arzabad, and the founding chief-editor of the monthly Paygam-e-Haqq and weekly Jamiat magazines. He is also noted for his contributions during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
