Samuel Kibathi Wanjiru (born 23 February 2005) is Kenyan long distance and cross country runner. [1]
Originally from Nyandarua County, [2] he attended Kurashiki High School in Japan. [3]
Kibathi won the 5000 metres Kenyan national U20 world championship trials in a time of 13:47.86 in July 2022. [4] He finished sixth at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships over 5000 metres in Cali, Colombia in August 2022 after he fell close to the finish line. [5]
At the start of 2023, he won the men's Under-20 8km at the Kenyan National Cross Country Championships and the U20 race at the Sirikwa Cross Country Classic in Eldoret. [6] He ran a personal best time of 13:36.02 over 5000 metres in Nairobi. [7] He was a bronze medalist in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 African U18 and U20 Championships in Athletics in Ndola. [8]
In 2024, he won the Kenyan U20 national cross country title and was subsequently selected for the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia. [9] [10] On 30 March 2024, he won gold in the U20 individual and in the team U20 race at the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia. [11] [12]
Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon is a Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. Kipyegon is the current world record holder for the 1,500 metres and mile, and the former world record holder for the 5,000 metres. Kipyegon is the only three-time Olympic champion in the 1500 metres race, having won a gold medal each at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She also won a gold medal in the 1,500 m at the 2017, 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships and in the 5,000 m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kipyegon became the first athlete ever to win three consecutive gold medals in the 1500m women's race, where she also set a new Olympic record. Kipyegon had earlier on in the 2024 Paris Olympics also earned a silver medal in the women's 5000m race, an event marked by controversy. Initially disqualified for obstruction, Kipyegon's second-place finish was later reinstated. Beatrice Chebet edged her out to win the gold.
Alemitu Heroye Banata is an Ethiopian professional long-distance runner. She was World Junior Champion over 5000 metres in 2014 and placed fourth at the 2015 World Cross Country Championships.
Selemon Barega Shirtaga is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the gold medal in the 10,000 metres at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, silver for the 5,000 metres at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. Selemon is a two-time 3,000 metres World Indoor Championship medallist, taking silver in 2018, and a gold in 2022.
Beatrice Chebet is a Kenyan long-distance runner who is the world record holder in the 10,000 m and the gold medalist at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 5000 m and 10,000 m races, becoming the third woman in history to win both events at the same Olympic games.
Nadia Battocletti is an Italian female middle- and long-distance runner. She won the gold medal in the 5000 m and 10000 m races at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Battocletti won a silver medal in the 10,000 m and placed fourth in the 5000 m race.
