Sanaleipak Nachom, also known as Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes' Association or simply Sanaleibak Nachom, is a Meitei cultural association of artists of Shumang Kumhei art form of Kangleipak ( Meitei for ' Manipur '). [1] [2] [3]
In February 2013, in the "IX Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei" (Meitei : ꯹ꯁꯨꯕ ꯁꯨꯃꯥꯡ ꯂꯤꯂꯥ ꯅꯤꯡꯊꯝ ꯀꯨꯝꯍꯩ) organised by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council in the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, artists of Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association achieved two awards. Artist Nilachandra won the Best Actor Award and Somorjit won the Best Actress Award. [4]
In the 50th All Manipur Sumang Leela Festival 2021-22, organised by the Manipur State Kala Academy in the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association won the Best Play Award for their production "Wakhal Eronba" (also spelled as "Wakhal Irolba")(Meitei : ꯋꯥꯈꯜ ꯏꯔꯣꯜꯕ). In March 2023, in the 51st All Manipur Shumang Leela Festival 2022-23, organised by Manipur State Kala Akademi in the Th Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, the Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association achieved the Best Disciplined Team status as well as the Second Best Playback Singer position (K Janeman) for their production "Panthou Mangol Khenjonglang" (Meitei : ꯄꯟꯊꯧ ꯃꯥꯡꯒꯣꯜ ꯈꯦꯟꯖꯣꯡꯂꯥꯡ). Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes' Association organised an event named "Dances of India", in which five dances are performed simultaneously in a solo show, spreading the message of national integration and communal harmony through the means of dances. The performed dances are Manipuri classical dance, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Bhangra (dance). [lower-alpha 1] It was performed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy in Imphal. [10]
In 2016, the Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association performed a play named "Mera Thaomei" (Meitei : ꯃꯦꯔꯥ ꯊꯥꯎꯃꯩ), directed by O. Praphulochand, as a part of the then annually ongoing Sangai Festival. [11] [12]
In 2019, "Ahingda Numit" (Meitei : ꯑꯍꯤꯡꯗ ꯅꯨꯃꯤꯠ), a play produced by the Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association, was selected to be one of the three Shumang Kumhei plays of the annual session 2019. [13]
Meitei cinema actor Denny Likmabam (Meitei : ꯗꯦꯟꯅꯤ ꯂꯤꯛꯃꯥꯕꯝ) joined Sanaleipak Nachom Artistes Association in 1997. He made his debut in the Shumang Kumhei play "Sajibugi Leihao" (Meitei : ꯁꯖꯤꯕꯨꯒꯤ ꯂꯩꯍꯥꯎ), playing the role of a police officer. [14]
Comedian artist Sougrakpam Hemanta (Meitei : ꯁꯧꯒ꯭ꯔꯥꯛꯄꯝ ꯍꯦꯃꯟꯇ), besides being an actor by his own right, also serves as the founder secretary, [15] president as well as the director of the Sanaleipak Nachom Artiste Association. [16] [17]
Meitei cinema artist Yumnam Nilachandra Singh (Meitei : ꯌꯨꯝꯅꯥꯝ ꯅꯤꯂꯆꯟꯗ꯭ꯔ ꯁꯤꯡꯍ) was also a prominent leading actor in the field of Shumang Kumhei, as a member of the Sanaleipak Nachom. [18]
Manipuri dance, also referred to as the Manipuri Raas Leela, is a jagoi and is one of the major Indian classical dance forms, originating from the state of Manipur. It is one of the greatest cultural achievements of the traditional Vaishnavism adhering Meitei people of Manipur. Owing to the Meitei civilization, the classical dance form, first formally developed by Meitei Hindu king Ching Thang Khomba of the Kingdom of Manipur, is considered to be the highest spiritual expression of the worship of Hindu deity Krishna. Owing to its huge influences on the diverse cultural heritages across the Indian subcontinent, it is recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India as one of the few primary classical dance forms of the Republic of India, and is honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Manipuri annually. It is referred to as the "national dance" during the Armenia-India joint issue of postage stamps, as a part of the Armenia-India international relations.
Pakhangba is a primordial deity, often represented in the form of a dragon, in Meitei mythology and Sanamahism, the indigenous religion of Manipur. He is depicted in the heraldry of Manipur kingdom, which originated in paphal, mythical illustrations of the deity. It is believed that the ancestor of one of the Meitei clans manifested himself as the Pakhangba.

Shumang Kumhei, also known as Shumang Leela, is a Meitei traditional form of theatre, usually performed in Manipur, North East India. The theatre is arranged in the form of open air from four sides. The roles are all played by male actors, some dressed as beautiful ladies. The role of male characters are played by female artists in case of female theatre groups. This traditional theatre form was prevalent since the time of monarchical rule in Manipur. But the proper form of Shumang Leela had its inception in 1895 A.D.
Shougrakpam Hemanta is an Indian comedian, actor, writer and director, who has worked in various Shumang Kumhei plays and Manipuri films. He is well known for his role of Oja Tolhan in Eegi Mahao and his portrayal of the title role in the movie Mantri Dolansana. In 2017, he was conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in recognition of his contribution in the traditional Meitei theatre of the Shumang Kumhei. With this, he became the first person to receive the award for this art form.
Chinglen Thiyam was an actor, comedian, lyricist and director of Shumang Kumhei theatre in Manipur. He had acted in over 100 plays and directed around 20 plays. Thiyam had also acted in many Manipuri films. He was popularly known as Commando Chinglen from the Shumang Leela Thawaina Punshigidamak. Not only in digital films, but he had also acted in Manipuri celluloid movies. He was conferred with the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Award in 2020 for his profound contribution in Shumang Leela. Wari Loidri, Khomlang Laman, Thawaina Punshigidamak, Sanagi Nga, Keishamthong Thoibi were some of the famous plays where he acted.
Apaiba Leichil is a 2021 Manipuri film directed by Bobby Wahengbam. It is jointly produced by Wahengbam Tomba, Hanjabam Sobhananda (Bung) Sharma and Bobby Wahengbam under the banner of Third Eye Productions. The film is based on the short story Nungshibagi Saklon (Nungsitombi) by Rajmani Ayekpam. It stars Bishesh Huirem and Arun Yumnam in the lead roles. The film won three awards at the 14th Manipur State Film Awards 2022. It got official selections at the 18th International Film Festival of Thrissur 2023, Kerala Kashish International Queer Film Festival 2023, Mumbai. The movie was screened at the Sangai Film Festival 2022, which was organised as a part of the Manipur Sangai Festival.
Bishesh Huirem is an Indian actress and model from the Meitei ethnicity of Manipur. She is best known for being the first Indian to represent India at the Miss International Queen for Transgender 2016 organised in Pattaya, Thailand. She is the first Indian transgender to be appointed as a state icon for the parliamentary polls in the Lok Sabha elections. She is the first transgender to win the "Best Actor Award" in the 14th Manipur State Film Awards, 2022.
