The Sanchez Art Center is a nonprofit arts organization located in Pacifica, California. It was formed in 1996 by local artists and community members.
The Sanchez Art Center was founded in 1996 by artists and residents of Pacifica. They worked together with the city of Pacifica to lease an abandoned elementary school building which is a part of the larger Pacifica Center for the Arts complex. The Sanchez Art Center has three indoor exhibition spaces, outdoor murals, an arts classroom, and art studio spaces. It is home to the Art Guild of Pacifica. [1]
According to their website, the mission of the Sanchez Art Center is to create community through art. [2] PenVoice host, Dani Gasparini, says of the Sanchez "It really is a destination for San Mateo County residents." She continues, "There is a real community feel to the Sanchez Art Center [which has] been able to build this very professional structure around the community feel, so that [Sanchez Art Center] has some of the top artists wanting to come and exhibit. . ." Significant artists exhibiting at the Sanchez, many early in their careers, include: Enrique Chagoya, Gerald Clarke, Binh Danh, Robert Hudson, Theodora Varnay Jones, Hung Liu, Bernie Lubell & Michael C. McMillen, John Mattos, Nathan Oliveira, Maria Porges, Mel Ramos, Ward Schumaker, João De Brito, M. Louise Stanley, Inez Storer, Ann Weber, and Wanxin Zhang. [4] [5]
The Sanchez Art Center hosts several annual juried exhibitions each year. These currently include The Left Coast Annual, which artistic director Jerry Barrish says has close to a thousand submissions for an exhibition with about 70 spots [3] and 50/50. [6] The Center also hosts exhibitions for the Arts Guild of Pacifica as well as other Bay Area arts organizations. Solo exhibitions are produced by guest curators. [7]

Educational programming includes art classes in local schools, workshops and summer camps. [8] These have been funded in part by the California Arts Council. [9]
The Sanchez Art Center is a host to Santa Cruz County’s Rydell Visual Arts Fellows Awardees’ exhibitions. [10] The 2006 and 2007 awardees were: Beverly Rayner, Hanna Hannah, Robert Larson, William Marino. The exhibition was curated by Susan Hillhouse, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. The 2008 and 2009 awardees were: William “Skip” Epperson, Terri Garland, Felicia Rice, and Daniella Woolf. The exhibition was curated by Susan Hillhouse, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections, Museum of Art & History @ the McPherson Center, Santa Cruz. The 2010 and 2011 Rydell Fellowship award winners were: Andrea Borsuk, Tim Craighead, Victoria May, and Andy Ruble. The exhibition was curated by Susan Hillhouse, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. The Sanchez Art Center achieved a San Mateo County Office of Sustainability Community Resilience Grant for See Change, Creating space for fear free conversation about sea level rise, a series of community engagement projects and exhibitions scheduled for early 2021. [15] [16]
In 2021 the Art Center hosted Extraction: Response to the Changing World Environment by the California Society of Printmakers, [17] [18] [19] an exhibition which was part of the CODEX Foundation's larger Extraction: art on the edge of the abyss project. [20]

The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) is a modern and contemporary art museum in downtown San Jose, California, United States. Founded in 1969, the museum holds a permanent collection with an emphasis on West Coast artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is located at Circle of Palms Plaza, beside Plaza de César Chávez. A member of North American Reciprocal Museums, SJMA has received several awards from the American Alliance of Museums.
Jens Hoffmann Mesén is a writer, editor, educator, and exhibition maker. His work has attempted to expand the definition and context of exhibition making. From 2003 to 2007 Hoffmann was director of exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts London. He is the former director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art from 2007 to 2016 and deputy director for exhibitions and programs at The Jewish Museum from 2012 to 2017, a role from which he was terminated following an investigation into sexual harassment allegations brought forth by staff members. Hoffmann has held several teaching positions including California College of the Arts, the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti and Goldsmiths, University of London, as well as others.
Binh Danh is a Vietnamese-born photographer and artist. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1979.
Carolyn Mary Kleefeld is an English-American author, poet, and visual artist. She is the author of twenty-five books, has a line of fine art cards, and has had numerous gallery and museum awards and exhibitions between 1981 and the present, in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities.
Graham Howe is a curator, writer, photo-historian, artist, and founder and CEO of Curatorial, Inc., a museum services organization supporting nonprofit traveling exhibitions. Curatorial Inc. manages the E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection and the Paul Outerbridge II Collection among others. Born in Sydney, Australia, Howe now resides in Los Angeles and London.
Christiane Paul is chief curator/director of the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design and an associate professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School, and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. She is widely known as the author of the book Digital Art, part of the 'World of Art' series published by Thames & Hudson.
Silvia Poloto is an artist born in São Paulo, Brazil who immigrated to San Francisco, California, in 1992. She earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from University of São Paulo. She earned her M.B.A. at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo. From 1996 to 1999, she worked as an instructor's assistant in the Sculpture Department, City College of San Francisco. During that period, she also worked as a welder at 3D Studios in Oakland and art instructor in mixed media at the Associated Students of the University of California Art Studio at the University of California, Berkeley.
She works in a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, and painting, and she also creates video art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, including the United Arab Emirates, France, Spain, Italy, Singapore, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and China, among others. In the San Francisco Bay Area, her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the SFMOMA Artist's Gallery, the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, the Italian American Museum, and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, where she was an artist-in-residence in 2001. Poloto's work has been acquired by more than 50 institutional and corporate collections around the US and by more than 800 private collectors around the world.
America Meredith is painter, curator, educator, and editor of First American Art Magazine. Based in Norman, Oklahoma, her work is known for its humorous approaches to social and environmental issues and for combining Native American and pop imagery.
Jody Zellen is an American artist and educator. Her practice, consisting of digital art, painting, video art, and drawing, has been showcased by way of interactive installations, public art, and curated exhibitions. She is also known for her art criticism.
The Armory Center for the Arts, also known as the Armory, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization located in Pasadena, California. The Armory provides community arts education programs for all ages and exhibitions of contemporary art, most of which are offered at no cost. Founded in 1989, the organization is housed in a renovated California National Guard Armory, from which its name is derived.
Felicia Rice is an American book artist, typographer, letterpress printer, fine art publisher, and educator. Work from the Press is included in exhibitions and collections both nationally and internationally, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants.
Nina Simon is an American exhibition curator, writer, educator, and museum director. She is the founder of the non-profit organization OF/BY/FOR ALL. Simon previously was the executive director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, from 2012 until June 2019. She is the author of two books: The Participatory Museum, and The Art of Relevance.
Anuradha Vikram is an art critic, curator, author, and lecturer based in Los Angeles, California. She is the artistic director of 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, and a senior lecturer at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles. She has contributed to numerous publications, and has a published book called Decolonizing Culture: Essays on the Intersection of Art and Politics.
Leslie Reid is a Canadian painter and printmaker from Ottawa, Ontario, known for adding a visual and sensory experience of light to the landscape tradition of painting in Canada. She is also an educator.
The Laundry SF, or simply The Laundry, is a contemporary art gallery, event space and cafe, founded in 2015 and located in San Francisco’s Mission District. The Laundry curates exhibitions, which includes public programming around civics, fine arts, music, comedy, and live performances. The Laundry hosts a mix of works by emerging and established Bay Area and global artists.
Jan Rindfleisch is an American artist, educator, author, curator, and community builder. Rindfleisch is known for the programming she initiated and oversaw at the Euphrat Museum of Art; for her book on the history of art communities in the South Bay Area, Roots and Offshoots: Silicon Valley's Art Community, and for her role in documenting the careers and legacies of Agnes Pelton and Ruth Tunstall Grant.
Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition. Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions.
Patricio Salvador Moreno Toro is a Chilean-born American visual artist and painter. His work is associated with abstract expressionism and incorporates Chilean forms and details.
Theodore "Ted" Odza (1915–1998) was an American artist, curator, and educator, known for his sculptures and abstract paintings. He taught art classes at University of California, Berkeley, and later served as the chair of the art department of Laney College. Additionally he curated multiple national touring art exhibitions of Central European artists.
Alison Gass is an American curator and museum director. She is the founding director of the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco. She has served as the director of the Institute of Contemporary Art San José, Smart Museum of Art, and chief curator of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
