Sandeep Jakhar is an Indian politician and member of Indian National Congress. He is currently serving as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Abohar. [1] He defeated BJP Leader Arun Narang from Abohar in 2022 Punjab Assembly Elections. [2] He is the nephew of Punjab BJP Unit President Sunil Jakhar. [3] [4]

Personal life

Sandeep belongs to a prominent Hindu Jat family from Abohar. His family has been associated with the Congress Party from three generations.Sandeep is an alumnus of Mayo College, Ajmer. Sandeep studied for two years in Switzerland before graduating from Miami. He worked as head of Country Club in Florida. He is married to Atsuko Jakhar. [5]

Sandeep's father, Surinder Jakhar has served as chairman of Asia’s cooperative fertiliser giant IFFCO for four terms and chief of Asian Cooperative Alliance for two terms. [6]

Political career

His grandfather Balram Jakhar has served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Union agriculture minister during the Narasimha Rao government. Balram Jakhar was also the longest serving Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

His uncle Sunil Jakhar is a 3-time MLA,1- time MP and former President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. [7]

Sandeep has served as district President of Youth Congress Unit in Punjab. [8]

MLA

Sandeep contested his first Punjab Legislative Assembly elections in 2022 from his family's traditional seat Abohar and won by a margin of 5,471 votes. [9] The Aam Aadmi Party gained a strong 79% majority in the sixteenth Punjab Legislative Assembly by winning 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. MP Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as Chief Minister on 16 March 2022. [10]

Sunil Kumar Jakhar is an Indian politician and president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Punjab unit since 4th July 2023. Previously, Jakhar was the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee from 2017 to 2021. Elected consecutively three times from Abohar, Punjab constituency (2002-2017), he was a Leader of the opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012 to 2017. He was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) for five decades until 2022. In May 2022, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that he wanted to support "nationalism, unity and brotherhood in Punjab". Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer is a two time member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Barnala constituency. He is a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Punjab. He first won the Legislative Assembly elections from the Aam Aadmi Party in 2017 by defeating the Indian National Congress's candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon. In the 2022 Legislative Assembly elections, he again won the Barnala constituency by a huge margin by securing almost 50% of the votes polled. He holds five important portfolios in the Mann ministry, wherein he is the Minister of the Departments of Higher Education & Languages, Governance Reforms, Sports & Youth Services, Science Technology & Environment and Printing & Stationery. Harpal Singh Cheema is an Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Dirba Assembly constituency located in Sangrur District, Punjab. In March 2022, he became first dalit to be a finance minister of Punjab. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party just before the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. He contested and won the election from Dirba Assembly constituency against a popular Punjabi Kabbadi player Gulzar Singh Moonak from Shiromani Akali Dal and Ajaib Singh Ratolan from Indian National Congress. Legislative Assembly elections were held in Punjab on 20 February 2022 to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The votes were counted and the results were declared on 10 March 2022.

Municipal elections were held in the Indian state of Punjab on 14 February 2021; the result was declared on 17 February. The elections are scheduled for 117 urban local bodies, including 8 municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
