The Sanford Pentagon (colloquially known as The Pentagon) is an indoor arena located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Pentagon opened in September 2013 and has a seating capacity of 3,250 spectators. It hosts the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA G League. The facility is known for hosting a wide range of sporting events including: regional youth basketball tournaments, NCAA Division I basketball games, NCAA Division II basketball games and tournaments, mixed martial arts events, and occasional concerts.
The Pentagon's first major event was hosted on October 10, 2013. The Minnesota Timberwolves played the Milwaukee Bucks in the main court as a preseason exhibition game, and television coverage was provided by Fox Sports North. The Wolves defeated the Bucks by a score of 98–89 in front of an announced crowd of 3,250. [3]
On November 8, 2013, the Pentagon hosted its first NCAA Division I men's basketball game between the then 20th ranked Wisconsin Badgers and the St. John's Red Storm. The game was televised on the Big Ten Network. Wisconsin won the game 86–75 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,523. [4]
On November 18, 2014, the Pentagon hosted an early season non-conference NCAA Division I basketball game between the then 11th ranked Wichita State Shockers and the Memphis Tigers. The game was televised by ESPN as part of their Tip-Off Marathon programming. The Shockers won that game 71–56 in front of a sellout crowd. [5]
On November 30, 2014, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits took on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, winning 71–58. The announced attendance was 3,250 and coverage was provided by Fox Sports North. [6]
For the third and final NCAA Division I basketball game of the 2014–15 season at the Sanford Pentagon, the UNLV Runnin' Rebels played the South Dakota Coyotes on December 13, 2014. UNLV won the game 75-61 and the game was televised by Midco Sports Network and ESPN3. [7]
On March 16, 2015, it was announced that the Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball team would play the Colorado Buffaloes men's basketball team on November 13, 2015, in an early season non-conference match-up. [8]
An early-season Division I basketball tournament—the Crossover Classic—was announced for the Pentagon in 2020. It serves as a de facto replacement for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Nassau, Bahamas, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the teams that were invited to said tournament were invited to the Crossover Classic. [9]
The site was also home to the Dakota Showcase, which hosted all four division one teams from the Dakotas. This included North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and South Dakota.
On June 20, 2024 it was announced that the Sanford Pentagon would host a new early season men's college basketball event called, "The Field of 68 Opening Day Showcase [10] ." This event will feature 6 of the best mid-major college basketball teams in the country. The 3-game event will be held on November 4, 2024 which is the opening day of the 2024-25 college basketball season. The teams and matchups that were announced include: College of Charleston vs. Southern Illinois, McNeese State vs. South Dakota State, and Saint Louis vs. Santa Clara.
Four other scheduled games planned at the Pentagon in fall 2024 include 2 men's basketball matchup's and 2 women's basketball matchups. The men's games include Nebraska vs. Utah and Iowa vs. Saint Mary's. The women's matchups are Nebraska vs. South Dakota and Iowa vs. Kansas.
On December 11, 2013, it was announced that the Sanford Pentagon would be home to multiple NCAA Division II championships. These include the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championships, the 2015, 2016, and 2018 NCAA Women's Division II Basketball Championships (except for the championship final in 2016, which will be held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis [11] ), and the 2016 and 2020 NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship. [12] Beginning in 2018, it will also be the home to the NAIA Division II men's basketball championship. [13]
Beginning in 2014, it is also home to the NSIC (Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) conference basketball tournament. [1] The NSIC is an NCAA Division II conference with schools located mainly in Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, which operates in the Upper Midwest of the United States. Nine of its members are in Minnesota, with three members in South Dakota, two members in North Dakota, and one member in Nebraska. It was founded in 1932. With the recent NSIC expansion, the original six member schools have been reunited.
Midco is a regional cable provider, providing a triple play service of cable television, Internet and telephone service for both North Dakota and South Dakota, along with much of Minnesota, and several communities in Kansas and Wisconsin. The company's business-class service also provides direct fiber-optic communications services via leased data circuits for larger companies.
The North Dakota State Bison are the athletic teams of North Dakota State University (NDSU), which is located in the city of Fargo, North Dakota. The teams are often called the "Thundering Herd". The current logo is a bison.
The Augustana Vikings are the athletic teams that represent Augustana University, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Vikings compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for all 14 varsity sports. The Vikings joined the NSIC from the North Central Conference, which folded in 2008.
The Sioux Falls Cougars are the athletic teams that represent the University of Sioux Falls, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in intercollegiate sports as a member of the NCAA Division II ranks, primarily competing the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) since the 2012–13 academic year. Prior to joining the NCAA, the Cougars previously competed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from 2000–01 to 2010–11; and in the defunct South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) from 1977–78 to 1999–2000.
The Denny Sanford Premier Center is an indoor arena in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The building is located at 1201 North West Avenue, and is connected to the Sioux Falls Arena and Sioux Falls Convention Center. The Arena's naming rights partners, and largest sponsors, are Sanford Health, First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard.
The Minnesota State–Moorhead Dragons are the athletic teams that represent Minnesota State University Moorhead, located in Moorhead, Minnesota, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Dragons generally compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for all 14 varsity sports.

It began March 10, 2017, following the 2016–17 season and concluded with the championship game on March 25, 2017.
The 2018 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament is the 62nd annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division II college basketball in the United States. Featuring sixty-four teams, it began on March 9, and concluded with the championship game on March 24.
The 2018 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball national championship was held from March 7–13 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD. The 27th annual NAIA basketball tournament featured thirty-two teams playing in a single-elimination format. In a rematch of the 2016 Championship game, the outcome was the same. The championship game was won by the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats of Marion, Indiana over the Saint Francis Cougars of Fort Wayne, Indiana by a score of 84 to 71.
The 2018 NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament involved 64 teams playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the NCAA Division II women's college basketball national champion. It began on March 9, 2018, and concluded with the championship game on March 23, 2018.
The 2019 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national championship was held in March 2019 at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The 28th annual NAIA basketball tournament featured 32 teams playing in a single-elimination format. The championship game was won by Spring Arbor (Mich.) Cougars over the Oregon Tech Hustlin' Owls by a score of 82 to 76.
The 2015 NCAA Division II women's basketball tournament was the 34th annual tournament hosted by the NCAA to determine the national champion of Division II women's collegiate basketball in the United States.
The 2017–18 Northern State Wolves men's basketball team represents Northern State University in the 2017-18 NCAA Division II men's basketball season. The Wolves were led by eighth year head coach Paul Sather and played their home games at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They competed as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. After winning the NSIC tournament, the Wolves received an automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament. They were berthed with the #2 seed in the regional tournament and beat Minnesota State by a score of 90–83 to win the Central Region Tournament and move on to the Elite Eight. The Elite Eight was held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Wolves beat East Stroudsburg and Queens to move on the National Championship game where they lost to the Ferris State Bulldogs by a score of 69–71.
The 2022 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament was the single-elimination tournament to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division II college basketball in the United States.
The 2020 NAIA Division II men's basketball tournament was the partially-completed tournament held by the NAIA to determine the national champion of men's college basketball among its Division II members in the United States and Canada for the 2019–20 basketball season.
The 2023–24 Summit League men's basketball season started non-conference play on November 6, 2023, and began conference play on December 29, 2023. The regular season ended on March 2, 2024, and set up the 2024 Summit League men's basketball tournament from March 8 to March 12, 2024.
South Dakota State finished league play with a 12-4 record as the regular season champion. In the postseason, after winning the Summit League tournament, South Dakota State was slotted as a 15 seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. They lost to Iowa State in the first round.
