Sanjay Mittal is a Professor of computational fluid dynamics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. [1]
After doing his B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur in 1988, he got enrolled at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities for M.S. program. He then received his Ph.D. and worked as a research associate under Tayfun Tezduyar.
After working for two years at Army High Performance Computing center he returned to India and joined IIT Kanpur in the year of 1994 as an assistant professor.
Professor Subrahmanyam Saderla a Dalit by caste, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and a junior colleague of Mittal, filed a complaint with the IIT Kanpur authorities that he has been constantly harassed by Four professors of IIT Kanpur on caste basis and Mittal was one of them. [2] An inquiry was initiated and found the allegations to be true. Subsequent action recommended demotion of Mittal. [3] An FIR was also filed against Mittal. The NCSC (National Commission for Scheduled Castes) recommended strict legal action against Mittal and 3 others. Accusations against IIT Kanpur for caste based discrimination have been there in media though IIT Kanpur authorities have rubbished all such allegations. Professor Manindra Agrawal who is the present Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, and was the Officiating Director when Dr. Saderla was hired has given a detailed account of the events that unfolded ever since the seminar job talk of Dr. Saderla. Dr. Saderla has given an interview about the case, which is published on YouTube.

He was Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and was in temporary charge of the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior. From the year 2016 to 2020, Professor Dhande was the Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, an Institute established by the Government of India in the year 1963. He was also Chairman, Board of Governors of National Institute of Technology Delhi . Professor Dhande was the founder director of Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur. He served as a part-time member of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Also, he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.
A lack of oversight and a lack of proper training for scientists have led to the rise of plagiarism and research misconduct in India. India does not have a statutory body to deal with scientific misconduct in academia, like the Office of Research Integrity in the US, and hence cases of plagiarism are often dealt in ad-hoc fashion with different routes being followed in different cases. In most cases, a public and media outcry leads to an investigation either by institutional authorities or by independent enquiry committees. Plagiarists have in some cases been suspended, removed or demoted. However, no fixed route has been prescribed to monitor such activities. This has led to calls for establishment of an independent ethics body.

Purushottam Kashinath Kelkar (1909-1990) was an Indian scientist who is best remembered for being the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, which was established in 1959. He was also involved in the planning process for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai and served as its third director, for a period of 4 years. Kelkar was instrumental in securing USA's technical collaboration in the establishment of IIT Kanpur, by persuading the then USA ambassador, John Kenneth Galbraith to locate the fledgeling institution on the outskirts of Kanpur, in North India. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1970.
Dr. Chetput Venkatasubban Seshadri was a distinguished Indian chemical engineer who was chair of chemical engineering at IIT Kanpur. IIT Kanpur today has an endowed chair named for him, the C. V. Seshadri Professorship.
Partha Pratim Chakrabarti (Chakraborty) is an Indian computer scientist. He is a distinguished professor and the former director of IIT Kharagpur. Dr. Chakrabarti has made pioneering research contributions and has solved a number of open problems. His work has been incorporated in standard text books as well as industry level tools of major international companies. He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences and supervised two dozen PhD students. He is also an honorary awardee of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for the engineering category in 2000.
Harish Chandra Verma, popularly known as HCV, is an Indian experimental physicist, author and emeritus professor of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. In 2021, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, by the Government of India for his contribution to Physics Education. His field of research is nuclear physics.

He was a Dr. Jag Mohan Garg Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on organic photochemistry and supramolecular chemistry. He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2008, for his contributions to chemical sciences.
Yogesh Moreshwar Joshi is an Indian chemical engineer, rheologist and the Pandit Girish & Sushma Rani Pathak Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on metastable soft matter and is an elected fellow of the Society of Rheology, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Academy of Engineering. In 2015, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded Joshi the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to Engineering Sciences. In 2023, he received prestigious J C Bose fellowship constituted by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Government of India.
Deepak Kumar was an Indian condensed matter physicist and a professor at the School of Physical Sciences of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Known for his research on quantum mechanics and other areas of condensed matter physics, Kumar was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1988.

Fathima Latheef was an Indian teenager and a first-year post-graduate humanities student at Indian Institute of Technology Madras who had committed suicide in her hostel room on 9 November 2019. Her family and others had alleged that she ended her life because she had been discriminated against on the basis of her religion. She had named three professors for her death. An enquiry by Central Bureau of Investigation is ongoing regarding the case.
