Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero (born 1 April 1956) is the eldest son of Ado Bayero and the brother of current Emir Aminu Ado Bayero. He was the Chiroma (Crown Prince) of Kano from 1990 to 2015; [1] and was titled Wambai (a prestigious title) of Kano by his brother. [2]

Early life

Family

Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero was born on 1 April 1956, during the reign of his uncle Emir Muhammadu Sanusi I. His father, Ado Bayero, was the brother of the Emir, and later became Emir of Kano from 1963 to 2014. He is the eldest son and first child of his father; his mother was his fathers cousin. He was born at his father's house: Filin Chiranchi (Chiranchi Field), where his father stayed before becoming the Emir of Kano. Sanusi Ado later made the house his official residence in Kano. [3]

Sanusi Ado is the eldest primogeniture of the royal family, and is revered by the emirate and people. His younger siblings include current Emir of Kano: Aminu Ado Bayero and Nasiru Ado Bayero the Emir of Bichi. [4] His nephew, Muhammadu Sanusi II (Sanusi Lamido Sanusi) succeeded his father as Emir of Kano from 2014 to 2020, when he was dethroned by the state government. [5]

Education

Sanusi Ado received his primary education at the Rano Boarding Primary School from 1963 to 1969. He attended Rumfa College in Kano from 1969 to 1973, before later attending Government College, Birnin Kudu, one of the oldest prestigious government colleges in Northern Nigeria from 1973 to 1975, where he was the head boy. He attended the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria from 1975 to 1976. [1]

In 1976, he proceeded to the Ecole International De La Langue Francoise in Paris, where he received a French diploma in 1979. He then proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where he received a bachelor's degree in law in 1983, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1984. After his call to the bar, he served his mandatory youth service as a lecturer at the Kaduna Polytechnic from 1984 to 1985. [1]

Early career

Sanusi Ado served in the Kano State Ministry of Justice as a state counsel from 1985 to 1987; and in 1986 founded a private practice Lamido & Co. in Kano, before becoming legal adviser and company secretary of Kano State Investment and Properties between 1988 and 1989. He was the director general of the Kano State Council of Chiefs from 1991 to 1993, and was later transferred to be the head of Special Duties of the Kano State Government between 1993 and 1996. Between 1996 and 2000, he was the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information, Youth and Culture. In April 2015, he was appointed the managing director of the Nigerian Port Authority, [6] he position he held until his removal in August 2015. [7]

Crown prince

In 1990, Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero was crowned the Chiroma of Kano (Crown Prince), member of the Kano Emirate Council and District Head of Gwale by Emir Ado Bayero.

Succession

In 2014, after fifty-one years on the throne his father, Ado Bayero died. [8] A bitter succession struggle over who'd succeed him emerged within the royal family between the Bayero and Sanusi houses. [9] As his eldest son and heir, Sanusi Ado was considered the natural successor and initial reports announced him as Emir. [10] On 8 June 2014, his nephew Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was crowned Emir of Kano. [11] Sanusi Ado in protest decided to leave Kano. [12]

Exile and return

In 2015, he was stripped of all his titles, after refusing to pay allegiance to Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. [13] After five years of royal exile and obscurity and with the dethronement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the subsequent enthronement of his younger brother Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir, in July 2020, Sanusi Ado was reinstated his position in the Kano Emirate Council and made him Wamban Kano. Personal life

Sanusi Ado speaks fluent Arabic, Hausa, English and French. And he enjoys playing squash, reading, travelling, farming and horse-riding. [1]

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, CON ; born 31 July 1961), known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II, is a spiritual leader in the Tijanniyah Sufi order of Nigeria. He is a member of the Dabo dynasty and the 14th emir of the ancient city-state of Kano. He was born in Kano in 1961 into the royal family as the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I. He succeeded his great-uncle Ado Bayero to the throne on 8 June 2014, and spent most of his reign advocating for cultural reform in Northern Nigeria, until his dethronement on 9 March 2020.

Ibrahim Dabo was the leader of the Fulani Sullubawa in Kano and founder of the eponymous Dabo dynasty. His progeny has lasted over two centuries reigning as Muslim rulers of the ancient city-state of Kano. Alhaji Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I KBE was the Acting Governor of Northern Nigeria (1957) and Emir of Kano from 1954 to 1963. He was the eldest son of Emir Abdullahi Bayero. He was a powerful Emir that had substantial influence in the colonial Northern Nigeria. He hosted a grand durbar festival for Elizabeth II when she visited Kano in 1956. The power tussle between him and his distant cousin Sir Ahmadu Bello the Sardauna of Sokoto and accusations of financial malfeasance led to his abdication, and subsequent self-exile in Azare 1963. His grandson, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria was Emir of Kano from 2014 to 2020. Sanusi belonged to the reformed Tijaniyya order of Ibrahim Niass.

Nasiru Ado Bayero, OFR is a Nigerian banker and businessman. He is the current Emir of Bichi, a Nigerian traditional state, Kano State, Nigeria. He ascended the throne from his brother Aminu Ado Bayero who was named as the Emir of Kano, following the deposition of his nephew Muhammad Sanusi II by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. Prior to his accession, Bayero was the Chiroma of Kano Emirate and district head of Nassarawa during the reign of Muhammad Sanusi II.

Amina Adamu Aliyu is a Nigerian judge from Kano State She was born in Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State. She pursued her Bachelor of Laws at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, graduating in 1986, and subsequently completed her legal training at the Nigerian Law School, being called to the bar in May 1989. Aliyu started her career as a state counsel in the Kano State Ministry of Justice in 1989, eventually rising to the position of Deputy Director Civil Litigation by 2009 when she became a High Court Judge. Notable cases include chairing the election petition tribunals in Kwara State in 2020 and Kebbi State in the 2019 Nigerian general election. Aliyu also presided over cases involving issues such as irregularities in the selection process of the Kano Emirate Throne and heinous crimes, delivering judgments that led to convictions and sentences.


Nasiru Muhammad Al-Muktar Kabara also known as Nasiru Kabara, was a prominent Islamic scholar of Qadiriyya as well as the founder of Darul Qadiriyya in the Kano State and the former Leader of Qadiriyya in West Africa. He was succeeded by his son Qaribullahi Nasiru Kabara. He is also the father of the controversial Islamic scholar Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara.

Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa also known with his honorific as Sheikh Daurawa, is a Nigerian Islamic Scholar from Kano state. His father is a famous Researcher called Sheikh Ibrahim Muhammad Mai Tafsiri, Sheikh Daurawa appointed by Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in 2023 as commander of Hisbah Kano.
