Sarmaanyo is a town in the Sool region of Somalia [2] /Somaliland. [3] (Sometimes considered in the Sanaag region. [4] ) The town is predominantly inhabited by people from the Somali ethnic group, with the Dhulbahante sub-clan of the Harti Darod especially well represented.

Recent history

In March 2003, Puntland deployed troops to Sarmaanyo, Hingalol, and Fiqifuliye and other areas along the border. [5]

According to the December 2003 survey, diseases such as diarrhoea, anaemia, ARI and malaria increased, especially in Dhahar, Shimbiraale, Sarmanyo, and Baraakta Qol. [6]

Sarmaanyo and other Sool villages have seen an increase in remittances from the diaspora, up 36% in 2009 and 14% between 2009 and 2010. [7]

In October 2011, SomaliaReport reported that Sarmaanyo in Puntland is one of the most drought-stricken areas in the Sool region. [8]

On January 12, 2012, the Khatumo State was declared. Two days after this declaration, fighting broke out between Somaliland forces and Dhulbahante militias near Buuhoodle. Photos of casualties from this battle appeared on the Internet, leading to pro-Khatumo demonstrations in Las Anod and Sarmaanyo. [9] :104

In 2013, one of the elders of the Dhulbahante clan Garad Saleban Garad Mohamed held a meeting in Sarmaanyo to discuss the future of the Khatumo State and the Dhulbahante clan, attended by the Ugaadhyahaan clan, but talks were inconclusive and lasted several months. [9] :112

In December 2013, Garad Saleban Garad Mohamed and other Sarmaanyo elders called a halt to the fighting in the Taleh area. [10]

In July 2014, President Silanyo declared the combined area of Taleh, Sarmaanyo, Halin, Carroolay, and Godaalo as the new Haysimo region. [11]

In January 2015, the local government of Sarmaanyo complained that the problems in the distribution of relief supplies were due to the management of the Puntland Agency for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management (HADMA). [12]

In February 2016, following a large outbreak of Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia and other livestock diseases in the Sool region, the Ministry of Livestock of Puntland conducted a treatment campaign. [13]

In May 2018, residents of Sarmaanyo demonstrated in support of the Puntland army and to the effect of freeing the Sool region from Somaliland's army. [14]

On December 6, 2018, the Puntland government approved a new administrative region for the combined districts of Taleh, Godaalo, Carrooleey, and Sarmaanyo. [15]

In April 2019, Somaliland forces and pro-Somaliland militias occupied the Taleh district of the Sool region. Khatum Army withdrew without fighting. [16]

In October 2019, locust infestation occurred in the Hudun area, which includes Sarmaanyo. The mayor of Hudun enlisted the help of the Somaliland Army to exterminate them. [17]

In May 2020, the Somaliland government has built a new health center in the Sarmaanyo district. [18]

Demographics

The town of Sarmaanyo is primarily inhabited by the Dhulbahante clan. Both Naleye Ahmed and Mohamoud Ugadhyahan sub-sections of the Mohamoud Garad branch. The Abdi Mohamoud sublineage of the Mohamoud Ugadhyahan are well represented and holds the Garadate of Mohamoud Garad, Garad Saleban Garad Mohamed, who was born in this city. [19]

Bo'ame is an ancient town in the eastern Sool region. Khaatumo has effective control there since June 2023. It is the capital of Bo'ame district which includes the small towns of Karin-gorfood, Fardhidin, Dan-Gudban, Caleeli, Buura-wadal and Garaca Dacare and Biriqodayaga.

Horufadhi is a town in the Togdheer region of Somalia which comes under the Buhoodle District.

Ahmed Abdi Mohamud Sugulle "Habsade" is a Puntland and Somaliland politician. He was a decorated Colonel in the Somali Armed Forces and the second in command of the Somali Custodial Corps equivalent to that of the Italian Arma dei Carabinieri but the Custodial Corps fall under the Ministry of the Interior and are part of the Police Force. A politician and respected elder later in life (he was instrumental in the founding of Somaliland and became the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives. In 1998, he was appointed Minister of the Interior of Puntland but was dismissed in 2007 after a conflict with Mohamud Muse Hersi, who became President of Puntland in 2006. In 2007, he brought Somaliland troops into Las Anod, leading to Somaliland's effective control of the Sool region. He served as various Somaliland Ministers of state from 2008. In 2014, Abdiweli Gaas became President of Puntland and he come back to Puntland.

SSC or HMB-SSC or HBM-SSC was the name of the self-proclaimed autonomous government of the Dhulbahante clan living between Somaliland and Puntland, which was active from 2009 to around 2012. It claimed possession of the so-called SSC regions of Sool (S), Sanaag (S), and Cayn (C).

Garad Abdullah Garaf Soofe Durraan, Garad, of the Ahmed Garad, the second most senior chief of the Farah Garad branch of the Dhulbahante clan of the Somali people. He was one of the elders of the Dhulbahante clan. In his later years, he often attended meetings as a representative of the Buuhoodle.

Awrboogays(Awrbogays, Awr-boogays, Ar-boogays) is a town in south-central Sanaag in Somalia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Las Anod conflict (2023–present)</span> 2023 armed conflict in the Horn of Africa

The Las Anod conflict is an ongoing armed conflict between the Somaliland National Army and the SSC-Khatumo forces of the Dhulbahante in Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region. Fighting erupted on February 6 after Somaliland security forces held a violent crackdown on civil protests. On February 8, the supreme Garad of Dhulbahante, Garad Jama Garad Ali, declared an intent to secede and reunite with the Federal Government of Somalia.
