It is endemic to Colombia and known from the Chocó region in the departments of Antioquia, Chocó, Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, and Cauca, at elevations of 10–1,600 m (33–5,249 ft) asl. There are also reports from Ecuador but these are not considered valid. Its natural habitats are lowland tropical moist forests. It is a terrestrial species living in leaf litter near water. However, this frog was rediscovered in 2010 in the Peak Wilderness, a highly biodiverse area in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. Thus, this species had been "lost" for more than 130 years.
Stemonidium hypomelas is a species of deep-sea eel in the family Serrivomeridae, originally described from a 171 mm (6.7 in) specimen taken from a depth of around 1,000 m (3,280 ft) near Niihau Island, Hawaii in 1902. It can be distinguished from the related sawtooth eels by its reduced dentition, which more resemble those of the snipe eel. It is of no significance to fisheries.
