Save Mary is a prototype video game designed by Tod Frye and made for the Atari 2600. The game involves Mary who is trapped in a valley that is slowly filling with water. The player must operate a crane to move blocks to allow Mary to escape the rising water and eventually be carried to safety by the player.
Frye had years of experience working for various companies including Atari where he made the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man (1982). Following the video game crash of 1983, he continued to develop games for the system at companies like Epyx and in 1989 at Axlon where he began developing Save Mary. The game was never released as the company began focusing on making games for the Atari Lynx.
Prototypes of Save Mary were later discovered and released as bootlegs cartridges and online. The game had an official release in 2005, being included on the Atari Flashback 2 dedicated console. The game had since been released in various Atari compilations, and was announced for its own unique Atari 2600 cartridge in 2023.
Barnaby Black has placed Mary at the bottom of a steep canyon which is slowly filling with water. The player controls a crane to pick up various blocks that must be fit together to allow Mary to climb them to escape the rising water levels. Mary panics and moves back and forth climbing platforms near her. To progress, the player must move the crane left and right along its rails and lower the crane's hook and pick up objects such as bricks for Mary to traverse on, items to assist the player, and to pick up and rescue Mary herself. Items can be found that cause various effects for the player, ranging from controlling the water flow, moving the crane faster, stopping Mary from moving across the board and making her invulnerable to the bricks the player drops. [2]
Save Mary was made by Tod Frye. [3] Frye had a long history with Atari, joining the company in 1979 where he made the 1982 port of Pac-Man for the Atari 2600. [4] [5] [6] Following the release of the high-selling but poorly received game, Frye earned over $1.3 million in royalties but found most of his money had been depleted by 1985. [7]
Upon Jack Tramiel's acquisition of the Atari consumer division and launch of the Atari ST computer line, Tramiel began focusing on reviving the Atari 2600, hiring Michael Katz from Epyx in November 1985 to take on the role of the president of Atari's new Entertainment Electronics Division. [8] Frye had been working for Epyx porting computer games such as Summer Games to the Atari 2600 and then found himself next working for Nolan Bushnell's firm Axlon in 1989. [9] While at Axlon, Frye worked on games like Shooting Gallery and Save Mary. These titles went unreleased as development on games had then shifted to the new system, the Atari Lynx. [10]
Save Mary was one of eight prototype games cartridges that was discovered and made available onto the internet. Homebrew cartridges would later be sold unofficially using the prototype ROM. [3]
It was first officially published in the Atari Flashback 2 dedicated console in August 2005. [11] [12] [13] It was released alongside other unreleased prototypes for the Atari 2600 such as Aquaventure, Combat Two , Frog Pond and Wizard. [14] The Flashback 2 was discontinued in 2006, having sold over 860 thousand units. [15] The game was released in later Atari compilations such as Atari Flashback Classics Volume 1 (2018) and being added to the Atari 50 (2022) compilation in a free update in 2023. [16] [12] [17]
In 2023, Atari announced a limited edition cartridge of Save Mary for the Atari 2600. The item was sold out by October 2023. [3]
Since its official release, the game has received positive reviews from publications such as Video Game Collector, NintendoLife, and Destructoid . Matt Reichert of Video Game Collector magazine stated in 2008 that Save Mary was an interesting Tetris -variant and that "Atari had a real winner on its hands." [18] Ollie Reynolds of NintendoLife commented on the game in the Atari 50 2023 update release, stating that the title was a slow, methodical game, but immensely fun. [12] Zoey Handley of Destructoid stated that the game was a "pretty fantastic" Atari 2600 title. [3]
The Atari 2600 is a home video game console developed and produced by Atari, Inc. Released in September 1977 as the Atari Video Computer System, it popularized microprocessor-based hardware and games stored on swappable ROM cartridges, a format first used with the Fairchild Channel F in 1976. The VCS was bundled with two joystick controllers, a conjoined pair of paddle controllers, and a game cartridge—initially Combat and later Pac-Man. Sears sold the system as the Tele-Games Video Arcade. Atari rebranded the VCS as the Atari 2600 in November 1982, alongside the release of the Atari 5200.
The Atari 7800 ProSystem, or simply the Atari 7800, is a home video game console officially released by Atari Corporation in 1986 as the successor to both the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200. It can run almost all Atari 2600 cartridges, making it one of the first consoles with backward compatibility. It shipped with a different model of joystick from the 2600-standard CX40 and included Pole Position II as the pack-in game. Most of the announced titles at launch were ports of 1981–1983 arcade video games.
The Atari Lynx is a 16-bit fourth-generation hand-held game console released by Atari Corporation in September 1989 in North America and 1990 in Europe and Japan. It was the first handheld game console with a color liquid-crystal display. Powered by a 4 MHz 65C02 8-bit CPU and a custom 16-bit blitter, the Lynx was more advanced than Nintendo's monochrome Game Boy, released two months earlier. It also competed with Sega's Game Gear and NEC's TurboExpress, released the following year.
Kaboom! is an action video game published in 1981 by Activision for the Atari 2600. The game involves a Mad Bomber dropping bombs at increasing speeds as the player controls a set of water buckets to catch them. The gameplay was based on the Atari arcade video game Avalanche (1978). Kaboom! was programmed by Larry Kaplan with David Crane coding the graphics for the buckets and Mad Bomber. It was the last game designed by Kaplan for Activision, who left the company shortly after it was released. The game was later ported by Paul Wilson for the Atari 5200 system.
The Starpath Supercharger is an expansion peripheral cartridge created by Starpath, for playing cassette-based proprietary games on the Atari 2600 video game console.
Solaris is a space combat video game for the Atari 2600 published in 1986 by Atari. The game involves a player seeking out the planet Solaris via their starship. To accomplish this, the player must navigate the galactic scanner to explore quadrants of a map. Doing so allows them to explore Federation planets to refuel their ship, and engage in combat with hostile aliens known as the Zylons.
Miner 2049er is a platform game game developed by Big Five Software and published in December 1982. It is set in a mine, where the player controls the Mountie Bounty Bob. The player controls Bounty Bob through multiple levels of a mine, with the goal of traversing all of the platforms in each level all while avoiding enemies and within a set amount of time.
Phoenix is a fixed shooter video game developed for arcades in Japan and released in 1980 by Taito. The player controls a space ship shooting at incoming enemies that fly from the top of the screen down towards the player's ship. There are five stages which repeat endlessly. The fifth is a fight against a large enemy spaceship, making Phoenix one of the first shooters with a boss battle, an element that would become common for the genre.
Demon Attack is a fixed shooter video game created by Rob Fulop for the Atari 2600 and published by Imagic in 1982. The game involves the player controlling a laser cannon from the surface of a planet, shooting winged demons that fly down and attack the player in different sets of patterns.
David Crane is an American video game designer and programmer. Crane grew up fascinated by technology and went to DeVry Institute of Technology. Following college, he went to Silicon Valley and got his first job at National Semiconductor. Through his friend Alan Miller he learned about potential video game design work at Atari, Inc. and began work there in 1977.
River Raid is a video game developed by Carol Shaw for the Atari Video Computer System and released in 1982 by Activision. The player controls a fighter jet over the River of No Return in a raid behind enemy lines. The goal is to navigate the flight by destroying enemy tankers, helicopters, fuel depots and bridges without running out of fuel or crashing.
Pitfall II: Lost Caverns is a video game developed by David Crane for the Atari 2600. It was released in 1984 by Activision. The player controls Pitfall Harry, who must explore in wilds of Peru to find the Raj Diamond, and rescue his niece Rhonda and their animal friend Quickclaw. The game world is populated by enemies and hazards that variously cause the player to lose points and return to a checkpoint.
The Atari Flashback is a line of dedicated video game consoles produced since 2004, currently designed, produced, published and marketed by AtGames under license from Atari SA. The Flashback consoles are "plug-and-play" versions of the 1970s Atari 2600 console with built-in games rather than using ROM cartridges. The latest home console model, Atari Flashback 12 Gold, was released in 2023 and has 130 games.
Freeway is an action video game written by David Crane for the Atari 2600 and published by Activision in 1981. In the game, one or two players control chickens who cross a ten-lane highway filled with traffic. The goal is to set a high score in an allotted time. Every time a chicken gets across a point is earned for that player. Depending on the difficulty mode, a chicken is forced back a lane or sent back to the bottom of the screen when hit by a vehicle.
Tod R. Frye is an American computer programmer once employed by Atari, Inc., and is most notable for developing the home adaptation of Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 video computer system. Following the collapse of Atari he worked at video game and computer game companies such as 3DO and Pronto Games.
Lunar Lander is a single-player arcade game in the Lunar Lander subgenre. It was developed by Atari, Inc. and released in August 1979. It was the most popular version to date of the "Lunar Lander" concept, surpassing the prior Moonlander (1973) and numerous text-based games, and most later iterations of the concept are based on this Atari version.
Seaquest is an Atari 2600 video game designed by Steve Cartwright and published by Activision in 1983. The game is an underwater shooter in which the player controls a submarine.
Yars' Revenge is a 1982 video game designed by Howard Scott Warshaw for the Atari Video Computer System. The game involves a fly-like humanoid alien race known as Yars attacking their arch-rivals the Qotile who have destroyed their habitable planets in their solar system. The players control a Yar and fire or devour an energy shield protecting the Qotile to finish off the enemy with their Zorlon cannon.
Doug Neubauer is an American integrated circuit designer, video game designer, and programmer. Following graduation for Oregon State University and working at National Semiconductor, Neubauer worked at Atari, Inc. where he would develop the logic design on Atari's POKEY chip and designing and programming the video game Star Raiders (1980) both for the Atari 8-bit computer line. Star Raiders would go on to become one of the best-known games for Atari's 8-bit computers.
Atari 50 is a video game compilation and interactive documentary about the history of Atari. It comprises newly shot interviews with former Atari employees, archival footage, emulated games from the company's catalog, and six new games inspired by past Atari games. It was developed by Digital Eclipse, published by Atari, Inc., and released on Atari VCS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2022, the 50th anniversary of Atari's founding. The main feature of the game is a five-part interactive timeline that lays out the history of the company and its products through video, scanned artifacts and related games.
