Polladhavan is a 2007 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Vetrimaran in his directorial debut. Starring Dhanush and Ramya, the film revolves around a man whose life improves after buying a bike, and turns upside down after it is stolen. Three songs and the background score were composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, while Yogi B and Dhina composed each one song. Velraj was the director of cinematography, V. T. Vijayan edited the film and Rambo Rajkumar choreographed the stunts. The film was released on 8 November 2007. Receiving a tremendously positive response, it popularized the Bajaj Pulsar among the youth. The film was remade in a number of languages, owing to its success.
Jaikanth Sampath also known as Jai is Indian actor and musician working in Tamil films. The nephew of noted composer Deva & the cousin of Srikanth Deva, Jai had made his acting debut in a supporting role in Bagavathi (2002). In 2007, he successfully auditioned for a leading role in Venkat Prabhu's sports film Chennai 600028. His movie Subramaniapuram (2008) was also a big success, and Jai was praised for his performance.

Vella Raja is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language television series, produced as an Original for Amazon Prime Video. The series is directed by Guhan Senniappan of Nalaya Iyakunar and Sawaari fame, produced by S. R. Prabhu under the production banner Dream Warrior Pictures. It is the first Amazon Original in Tamil which was dubbed in both Hindi and Telugu languages. The series was released on Prime Video on 7 December 2018 and received positive reviews from the audience and critics for its making and the screenplay, It stars Bobby Simha, Parvatii Nair and Gayathrie in their streaming series debut, while Kaali Venkat plays a pivotal role in the series. Media outlets speculated that the series is inspired by the 2018 Hindi-language Netflix series Sacred Games.

In the film, a gangster from Madurai is recruited to help a British crime lord take down a rival, but later gets caught off guard by the moral dilemmas that follow.
Penguin is a 2020 Indian Tamil-language mystery thriller film written and directed by Eashvar Karthic in his directorial debut. The film was produced by Kaarthekeyen Santhanam, Sudhan Sundaram and Jayaram, under Stone Bench Films, backed by Karthik Subbaraj, and Passion Studios respectively. It stars Keerthy Suresh as a pregnant woman who is traumatised by nightmares about the unsolved kidnapping of her first child, and later embarks on a mission to solve the mystery of his disappearance.
The 2017 Indian film Mersal was subjected to several controversial issues. The first of this kind was the title naming issue, where a lawsuit was filed against the producers for using the title for promotions. The release further faced complications following the Tamil Film Producers Council's strike following the double taxation issue; protesting against the 10% entertainment tax additionally over the 28% GST, with the last minute denial of censorship, after Animal Welfare Board of India denied NOC over the usage of few animals without their permission. Upon release, the film was criticised by several organisations including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the then ruling AIADMK government objected to scenes featuring Vijay criticising the recently introduced Goods and Services Tax, and another scene in which a character ridicules the Digital India initiative. The party demanded that those scenes must be removed from future viewership. The Indian Medical Association and several other medical associations called for a boycott on the film, following their criticism over the alleged cynical portrayal of doctors working in government-operated hospitals. Several opposition parties and the film fraternity of India condemned the actions instructed by political organisations as a critical attack on freedom of speech in India.
