Self Preserved While the Bodies Float Up is the fourth and final full-length studio album by the progressive/alternative rock band Oceansize. It was released in September 2010 on Superball Music. [1] It has received near unanimous acclaim from critics.
The band stated numerous times that they believed the album to be significantly heavier, and in an interview with The Goodbye Look, vocalist/guitarist Mike Vennart confirmed that the album would showcase the band's heavier side; "...the new album's a mixture for sure. There's plenty of heavy stuff, the heaviest we've ever done. But we still love playing the lush stuff. I can only think of a couple of bands I love who are strictly HEAVY ONLY. Slayer, for example. For the most part, I feel like some bands over-play their lack of subtlety and it just gets... a bit boring really. I dunno, I can feel more emotions than anger and energy, so I expect my music to reflect that.". [2] Vennart also stated that he is very proud of the effort, saying "I can honestly say that I haven't been so excited about a record since 'Everyone Into Position' which I was incredibly proud of when we made it. I'm not necessarily trying to build anticipation for the record, moreover I just want people to know it's coming and that we love it!". [2]
Earlier in the year, guitarist/keyboardist Gambler elaborated on the direction of the album; "A while ago I posted a statement on our website saying that the new album will be “fifteen songs, all under four minutes.” This was obviously a joke, but it’s not so far from the truth. Most of the songs are shorter, more concise. We didn’t set out to write shorter songs, it just happened; we didn’t feel the need to drag them out and elaborate on them any further than necessary. I think we’ve been tarred with the ‘oh-they-write-long-proggy-songs’ brush so I think a few people will be quite surprised." [3]
Vennart attempted to describe the sound of the new album in January 2010, saying "In the most part it's a bit shorter, it's mainly heavier, there's one tune that we're just practising at the moment that is just the fucking loudest, most obnoxious, sludgy, horrible, heaviest thing we've ever done. I'm really looking forward to presenting that, it's going to be unbearable, that'll be quite interesting. I've never heard anything quite like it, so I don't quite know how people are going to take to it, it's not particularly catchy. It'll be good." He added that "Gambler is playing a little bit of keyboards in here or there. On the last album, 'Frames', Gambler's playing keyboards on virtually everything, so I think he's trying to keep that to a minimum this time. There's some stuff that's the fastest, most frantic stuff that we've ever done. The strange thing is that with every album that we do, we try to do something different and keep everybody on their toes, just to keep things interesting for us as well as the audience, but the thing is, it's really hard to change what you sound like. You can bring in all these strange influences and get introduced to all kinds of new music that can instigate fresh ideas but at the same time you're still going to sound like your band." [4]
The album was recorded at the band's self-funded studio in Manchester, while the mixing was completed at Abbey Road Studios by Sean Magee.
The special edition of the album comes with the b-side Cloak (aka Tough Cookie), as well as a detailed, 40-page booklet, while the vinyl edition of the album comes in a gatefold sleeve with all the lyrics as well as a copy of the entire album on CD.

TheNewReview.net gave the album a glowing review, stating that "Self Preserved While the Bodies Float Up finds Oceansize scaling back the grandiose in favour of more streamlined, accessible material and the music presented is all the better because of these alterations.... emotions are more exposed, variation is better explored, and the songwriting is increasingly dynamic on the group’s fourth and latest release... Self Preserved..., finds the group maintaining their hearty artisanship and at the same time trimming the excess fat, making their fourth full length release arguably their finest record yet...Pine serves as the final highlight to an album chock full of sensational songwriting...Without a doubt, Pine is one of the most remarkable compositions Oceansize have put to tape. [12] Rock Sound has also been effusive rating it 9/10 and calling it "Surely one of the finest records of 2010." Cathedral were a doom metal band from Coventry, England. The group gained attention upon release of its debut album, Forest of Equilibrium (1991), which is considered a classic of the genre. However, the band's sound evolved quickly and began to adopt characteristics of 1970s metal, hard rock and progressive rock. After releasing ten full-length albums and touring extensively for over two decades, Cathedral broke up after the release of The Last Spire in 2013.
Oceansize were an English rock band from Manchester, formed in 1998. The band consisted of Mike Vennart, Steve Durose, Richard "Gambler" Ingram, Mark Heron (drums) and Jon Ellis for the majority of its career, with Steve Hodson replacing Ellis on bass guitar in 2006.

Amplifier are an English rock band originating from Manchester. The band has released six albums and four EPs since its inception in 1999. Chloë Alper is a British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She began her music career in 1996 with Riot grrrl punk band Period Pains and is now a member of the English rock band James and a founding member of the British new prog rock group Pure Reason Revolution. Her solo release, "Juno", featured on the original motion picture soundtrack to Maniac. Another solo release, "True Love", is the title track to the American supernatural horror film Amityville: The Awakening.
Jon Courtney is a British musician best known as a singer, guitarist, keyboard player and songwriter for the progressive rock band Pure Reason Revolution. He also performed with Bullet Height, KC Blitz and as a DJ under the pseudonym Cedo Simplex.
Superball Music is a German independent record label, launched on October 1, 2007. Superball's MySpace page states that
The label’s focus will be on keen, young rock acts with a stylistic range that is centred on independent and alternative music, as well as acts that transcend genres and include a variety of contemporary directions. Superball Music aims to provide a platform and a "home" for these artists by specifically focusing on innovative music with commercial ambitions.
Dirty Heads is an American reggae rock band from Huntington Beach, California. Their debut album, Any Port in a Storm, was released on September 23, 2008, by Executive Music Group (Fontana/Universal). Their newest album, Midnight Control, was released on August 26, 2023, by Better Noise Music. They have been associated with music groups such as Sublime with Rome, 311, and Pepper, and have toured with groups including Cobra Starship, Aer, and Gym Class Heroes.
Amputee EP is the first release by British rock band Oceansize, and it was released in 1999. It features early recordings of the songs Amputee and Saturday Morning Breakfast Show, which were featured on the album Effloresce. The song Heaven Alive was re-recorded for Everyone Into Position, and Ebb was re-recorded as Relapse for the Relapse (EP).
A Very Still Movement is an EP by British rock band Oceansize, released in August 2001 on the record label Soviet Union. The tracks "Catalyst" and "Women Who Have Men Who Love Drugs" were re-recorded for the band's debut Effloresce. The EP was produced and mixed by Sel Balamir, singer and guitarist of Amplifier. Balamir is also featured in the last track, "Sizeofanocean".
Home & Minor is an EP by Manchester-based alternative rock band Oceansize, released on 26 October 2009 on Superball Music. The release is limited to 3000 copies. Regarding the EP, vocalist and guitarist Mike Vennart states, "we thought we’d try and make a mini-album of more reserved songs that have something in common with each other. It's our acoustic-like record, only there are no acoustic instruments and it’s not an album!"
The Vertigo of Bliss is the second studio album by Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro. Produced with the band by Chris Sheldon, it was released by Beggars Banquet Records on 16 June 2003. The album reached number 48 on the UK Albums Chart, and spawned four singles. A deluxe remastered edition was released in 2012, which featured, in addition to the original 13 album tracks, a number of B-sides from the album's singles.
If Not Now, When? is the seventh studio album by American rock band Incubus, released on July 12, 2011 and named after the novel by Primo Levi. Preceded by the singles "Adolescents" and "Promises, Promises", the album represented the band's longest gap between studio albums at the time, and their final full-length release through long-time label Epic Records. Described by guitarist Michael Einziger as "a very straightforward, concise album," If Not Now, When? was recorded in the wake of an extended hiatus, and produced by frequent collaborator Brendan O'Brien. The album's cover features high wire artist Philippe Petit.

Charlie Barnes is an English singer and songwriter. He is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist performing under his own name, and currently as a touring musician with indie rock band Bastille. He has released three albums; the latest, Last Night's Glitter, was released in July 2020.
