Selmor Mtukudzi is a Zimbabwean musician and actress. She is the daughter of the late Zimbabwean music icon and national hero, Oliver Mtukudzi. [1] [2] [3]

Early life

Selmor Mtukudzi is the second child to Oliver Mtukudzi [4] and Melody Murape [5] and was born in Harare. Her parents divorced when she was only 3 years old.

Career

Selmor's career began at the tender age of 10 when appeared in local ZBC TV dramas and performed the soundtrack of, and acted in the movie “I am the future” which featured at local cinemas.

In 2008 Selmor released her debut album titled "Shungu". The album did very well to introduce her arrival on the music scene as a solo artist since she had worked with different artist before. She went on to release 2 joint albums with her musician husband Tendai Manatsa,(son to legendary Zimbabwean musician, Zexie Manatsa), titled Selmor and Tendai "Live" in 2011, which was recorded in front of a live audience at the Prestigious 7 Arts Theatre in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare and "Ndinewe" (I Am With You), in 2012. Her 4th album "Expressions", released in 2013 became an instant hit with the track "Nguva Yangu" being nominated for the NAMA Awards and the ZIMA Awards [6] and winning African Entertainment Awards USA and Zimbabwe Chamber of Commerce — WECA Award.

In 2015 she released her fifth album titled "I Am Woman" with the track "Zvidikidiki" winning the NAMA Awards, Africa Entertainment Awards — USA Award again, [7] [8] and also nominations in the ZIMA Best Video of the Year Category and ZIWA UK Best Female Artist of the Year. [9] Her track "Butterflies" is the sound track for the ZIFF and NAMA Awards nominated movie "Escape", in which she played one of the leading roles. The title track "I Am Woman", encourages women to be confident in themselves and embrace their God given beauty and gifts. This track speaks volumes about Selmor's passion for uplifting girls and women. [10] [11] [12] Her next album “Dehwe Renzou” came in 2020 after the passing of her father. The album was produced by her father's long time friend and producer, South African Saxophonist, Steve Dyer.  

Selmor has toured countries that include Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Australia, USA, UK, Finland, Spain performing in front of different nationals. Selmor has performed at the Joburg Theatre at the Remembering Tuku Concert on the 29th & 30 May 2021 in South Africa with Vusi Mahlasela and Steve Dyer.

In 2015, Selmor came together with 8 other leading female artists from Africa (Judith Sephuma — South Africa, Victoria Kimani — Kenya, Vanessa Mdee — Tanzania, ArielleT — Gabon, Omotola — Nigeria, Waje — Nigeria, Yemi Alade — Nigeria and Blessing South Africa), and collaborated on a song titled "Strong Girl", which they used to promote the campaign #PovertyIsSexist across the world asking the world leaders to tackle poverty by addressing gender equality.

Later that year, they were joined by their male counterparts, (Bono — lead singer for U2 and co Founder of ONE, D'Banj — Nigeria, Diamond Platnumz — Tanzania, Banky W — Nigeria), and did a remix of "Strong Girl" and also made a statement that man are in support of the campaign.

She was also instrumental in the passing of the "Electrify Africa" bill in senate and in the House in Washington DC, America in 2016. This bill states that it is US policy to partner with Sub Saharan African countries, international financial institutions and African regional economic committees, cooperatives and private sectors to promote access to power services to at least 50 million people in Sub Saharan Africa by 2020.

In 2018 Selmor traveled to Canada to speak to the Canadian members of parliament about the importance of girls education.

Selmor's passion for uplifting and amplifying girls and women's voices has led her to form her own trust called Vabvana Trust. She believes that when you empower a woman you empower a nation.

Selmor is an Ambassador for Zimbabwe Big 5 Animals Conservation namely the Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Cheetah and Ambassador for Wild Aid Africa.

Personal life

Selmor Mtukudzi is married to fellow musician Tendai Manatsa, son to legendary musician Zexie Manatsa and together they have 3 children. [14] [15] [16]

Chiwoniso Maraire Zimbabwean singer and songwriter

Chiwoniso Maraire was a Zimbabwean singer, songwriter, and exponent of Zimbabwean mbira music. She was the daughter of Zimbabwean mbira master and teacher Dumisani Maraire. Describing the mbira, an instrument traditionally used by male musicians, she said, "It is like a large xylophone. It is everywhere in Africa under different names: sanza, kalimba, etc. For us in Zimbabwe it is the name for many string instruments. There are many kinds of mbiras. The one that I play is called the nyunga nyunga, which means sparkle-sparkle."

Winky D Musical artist

Winky D, born Wallace Chirumiko is a Zimbabwean reggae-dancehall artist, known popularly as "The Big Man", and also known as Dancehall Igwe, Gaffa, Ninja President, Proffessor, Extraterrestrial etc. He is often considered the Zimdancehall pioneer and one of the most accomplished modern Zimbabwean music artists . Not much is known about his wife but he in a few songs has mentioned his child's name Tayenda. The gaffas have continued to defend him about this issue claiming that it could be because of the respect he has for his family that he keeps them far from drama. He was born in Kambuzuma,a high density suburb in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. He was also a presenter for the Rockers Vibes programme that was an all reggae programme, together with Trevor Hall.

Sam Mtukudzi was a Zimbabwean musician. He was the son of the late singer Oliver Mtukudzi.

He is widely regarded as an original and important new voice in African music. Vanessa Mdee Tanzanian recording artist and television personality

Vanessa Hau Mdee, is a Tanzanian singer, rapper, television personality and radio host. Mdee is popularly known for being the first ever Tanzanian MTV VJ. She later rose to prominence as a radio and TV host, hosting Epic Bongo Star Search and Dume Challenge for ITV Tanzania before signing to B'Hits Music Group in late 2012.

Lovejoy Matare, popularly known by his stage name L kat, is a Zimbabwean hip hop recording artist originally from Kwekwe, Zimbabwe. He records mostly in Shona, his native tongue. In 2005, he released his first single "Wandinoda" as part of his high school compilation album dubbed Manunure High School Mic Fever 1. In 2013, he released his debut studio album Goodlife while signed to Maskiri's record label, Mhondoro Music. The album was supported by the singles "Ndinotya", "Ndiudze", "Tisanyadzise", and "Kupiko". On 6 April 2015, he released an EP album The Golden Episode. The album's singles include "Zita Rako", "My Special Munhu" and "Rudo Ma1". Victoria Kimani is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, actress and entertainer previously signed to Nigerian record label Chocolate City, and was described as the record label's first lady. She has received several award nominations from the African music industry, and her singles are played on radio channels across Africa. Her debut album was released in 2016.

Mukudzeyi Mukombe, who performs under the stage name Jah Prayzah, is a Zimbabwean contemporary musician and lead member of the band Third Generation. He is popularly referred to by fans and media as "Musoja", the Shona word for "soldier", a name he earned mostly because of his signature band uniform of military regalia. The name "Jah Prayzah" comes from his name, "Mukudzeyi", which means "Praise Him".

She is the founding executive director of Tag A Life International Trust (TaLI), an advocacy organization that promotes girls' and young women's rights and empowerment in Zimbabwe. Thamsanqa 'Tamy' Moyo is a Zimbabwean musical artist and actress. She is most notable for the 2016 song Ndibereke as well as acting role in the 2020 film Gonarezhou.

Berita Zimbabwean singer

Gugulethu Khumalo, best known by her stage name Berita, is a Zimbabwean-born singer, songwriter and music producer. Her music is a combination of soul music containing elements from Afro Jazz, contemporary pop influences as well as South African dance music. She is the owner of the independent record label Assali Music. She is also the founder of the Women of Music Business (WOMB), a pan African women empowerment organisation in the music industry.

Rumbidzai Takawira is a prominent Zimbabwean television personality, TV producer, broadcast journalist and former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation main news anchor. She is also a karateka, she represented Zimbabwe at the World Karate Championships in Shizuoka, Japan.

Shashl is a Zimbabwean music artist. She is the first Zimbabwean female musician to be signed under Universal Music Africa.
