Shadow Brook, also known as East Springfield Brook, [3] [4] is a river in northern Otsego County in the U.S. State of New York. It begins north-northeast of the Hamlet of East Springfield, and flows into Otsego Lake south-southeast of the Hamlet of Springfield Center, near Glimmerglass State Park. It is the largest watershed in the Otsego Lake basin. [1] [5]

History

Shadow Brook flows under the historic Hyde Hall Bridge, a covered bridge that was built in 1825. The bridge consists of a single 53-foot (16 m) span using a Burr Arch Truss and was constructed by master carpenter Cyrenus Clark with assistance from carpenter Andrew Alden and stonemason Lorenzo Bates. Renovations to the bridge were performed by the State of New York in 1967. [6] [7] It is one of 29 historic covered bridges in New York State.

Fishing

Suckers can be speared and taken from the creek from January 1 to May 15, each year. [8]

Otsego Lake is a 4,046-acre (16.37 km2) lake located in Otsego County in the U.S. state of New York. It is the source of the Susquehanna River and largest lake in Otsego County. The Village of Cooperstown is located at the lake's southern end. Glimmerglass State Park is located on the lake's northeastern shore, and includes Hyde Hall, a large mansion constructed in 1817, that overlooks the lake. The Glimmerglass Opera, opened in June 1987, is located on the western shore.

Schuyler Lake is the name of a small hamlet in the town of Exeter in Otsego County, New York, United States. It lies at the south end of Canadarago Lake and south of Richfield Springs. It is also known as Kaniatarake, which is a Mohawk name that translates to "on the lake".

Canadarago Lake Lake in Otsego County, New York, U.S.

Canadarago Lake is a 1,917-acre (7.76 km2) lake located in Otsego County, New York and is the source of Oaks Creek. The Village of Richfield Springs is located at the lake's northern end. It is the second largest lake in Otsego County, lying to the west of and parallel to the larger Otsego Lake. The lake's name is also spelled "Candajarago Lake" or "Caniadaraga Lake".

Hyde Hall Bridge

Hyde Hall Bridge is a wooden covered bridge over Shadow Brook built in 1825, on then-private property of Hyde Hall, a country mansion. Both are now included in Glimmerglass State Park. With the possible exception of the Hassenplug Bridge in Pennsylvania, it is the oldest documented, existing covered bridge in the United States. The World Guide to Covered Bridges and its entries of both the National Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Engineering Record list it as being constructed in 1825. The Historic American Buildings Survey entry for it shows an 1830 erection date.

Otego Creek

Otego Creek is a 32.7-mile-long (52.6 km) tributary of the Susquehanna River in Otsego County, New York. Otego Creek rises in the Town of Otsego and flows south through the Towns of Hartwick and Laurens, before joining the Susquehanna River southwest of the City of Oneonta.

Oaks Creek

Oaks Creek is a river that drains Canadarago Lake, which is situated in the north central region of Otsego County, New York. The creek begins by the Hamlet of Schuyler Lake and flows southeast approximately 9.32 miles (15.00 km), dropping only 105 feet (32 m) in elevation, before converging with the Susquehanna River south of the Village of Cooperstown, by the Hamlet of Index. From the source to Oaksville the creek flows along Panther Mountain. Fly Creek is a main tributary, that converges with Oaks Creek south of the Hamlet of Fly Creek.

Hayden Creek (New York)

Hayden Creek is a river in Otsego County, in the U.S. State of New York. It begins north-northwest of the Hamlet of East Springfield and flows generally southward before flowing into Otsego Lake south of the Hamlet of Springfield Center.

Trout Brook, also known as White Creek is a river that is located in northern Otsego County, New York. The river starts at the outlet of Allen Lake and flows southeast before flowing into Otsego Lake south of Springfield Center. It is a third-order tributary on the northwest side of Otsego Lake and has an average gradient of 96 feet/mile.

Canajoharie Creek Watercourse in the United States of America

The Canajoharie Creek is a river that flows into the Mohawk River in the Village of Canajoharie in the U.S. State of New York. The name "Canajoharie" is a Mohawk language term meaning "the pot that washes itself", referring to the "Canajoharie Boiling Pot", a 20-foot (6.1 m) wide and 10-foot (3.0 m) deep pothole in the Canajoharie Creek, just south of the village of Canajoharie. Bowmans Creek is one main tributary that enters the creek east of the Hamlet of Sprout Brook. The other main tributary is Brimstone Creek which enters the creek north-northwest of the Village of Ames.

West Kill Tributary of the Schoharie Creek in Greene County, New York

The West Kill, an 11-mile-long (18 km) tributary of Schoharie Creek, flows through the town of Lexington, New York, United States, from its source on Hunter Mountain, the second-highest peak of the Catskill Mountains. Ultimately its waters reach the Hudson River via the Mohawk. Since it drains into the Schoharie upstream of Schoharie Reservoir, it is part of the New York City water supply system. It lends its name to both a mountain to its south and a small town midway along its length.

Mount Wellington (New York)

Mount Wellington is a mountain located in the Central New York Region of New York. It is located south of the Hamlet of Springfield Center at the northern end of Otsego Lake. Mount Wellington rises 600 feet (180 m) above lake level. The extreme southern point of the mountain is called Clarke Point and also referred to as the Shad Cam. It is known as "The Sleeping Lion", as it looks similar to a lion laying down, viewed from Cooperstown, New York. It was originally named Mount Millington, but was renamed by George Hyde Clarke in honor of Field Marshal The 1st Duke of Wellington, the victor of Waterloo, who had been Clarke's schoolmate at Eton College in England.

Red House Hill is a mountain in the Central New York Region of New York. It is located south-southwest of the Hamlet of Springfield Center, New York, west of Hutter Point and Six Mile Point of Otsego Lake, and southeast of Rum Hill. Mohican Brook flows eastward along the southern edge of the hill.

It is located in the Town of Springfield, north of the Village of Cooperstown and south of the Hamlet of Springfield Center. Clarke Point makes up the southern tip of Mount Wellington and marks the northern edge of Hyde Bay. It can be accessed via Hyde Hall or by boat.

Summit Lake (Springfield, Otsego County, New York)

Summit Lake is a small lake in Otsego County, New York. It is located northeast of Springfield Center. Summit Lake is unique, as it drains south via Hayden Creek which flows into Otsego Lake as well as north toward the Mohawk River. Fish species present in the lake include largemouth bass, chain pickerel, brown bullhead and yellow perch.
