Shaili Singh (born 7 January 2004) is an Indian athlete who competes in long jump events. She is the junior Indian national long jump champion in age group categories and ranks among world's top 20 long jumpers in the Under-18 category. [1] [2] She holds the national record for long jump in the Under-18 category. She is trained by veteran Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George and her husband Robert Bobby George. [3]

Personal life and background

Singh was born on 7 January 2004 in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh India. She was raised by mother Vinita Singh, who is a single parent to three children. Vinita Singh is a small time entrepreneur by profession. [1] [2]

Singh moved to Bangalore at the age of 14 to train at the Anju Bobby George Sports Foundation. [4] Singh started training under the supervision of the George couple. [5] [2]

Professional achievements

Singh won the gold medal in long jump in the U-16 category at the Junior National athletics championship in Ranchi in 2018, where she also broke the national record for junior long jump; she recorded a 5.94-metre jump. In 2019, she bettered her own record in Under-18, jumping 6.15 meters to win the gold medal at the Junior National Athletics competition in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. This was way ahead of the qualifying mark for participation in the IAAF Under-20 Championship in 2020. [6] India's Minister of Sports Kiren Rijiju tweeted a congratulatory message to her on her success. [7] [2] In June 2021, at the senior athletic championships (National Inter-state) held in Patiala, Shaili jumped 6.48m, a new U20 record and won the long jump event while still a junior. Shaili Singh registered a jump of 6.59m to clinch the silver medal in long jump at the 2021 World Athletic U20 Championships. [8]

Anju Bobby George is a retired Indian athlete. Anju Bobby George made history when she won the bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. With this achievement, she became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Championships in Athletics jumping 6.70 metres (22.0 ft). She went on to win the gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005, a performance she considers her best. Anju was upgraded to the gold status from silver in the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo following the disqualification of Tatyana Kotova of Russia by the International Association of Athletics Federations, following the recent re-testing of the latter's sample collected at the 2005 World Championship in Helsinki. Suresh Babu was an Indian long jumper from Kerala who had held the national titles in the long, triple, and high jump events, in addition to the decathlon. Suresh Babu dominated the scene between 1972 and 1979, winning national titles in the jumps and decathlon and at the same time picking his event for laurels on the international arena. He was one of the athletes to win medals in two events in successive Asian Games, the bronze in the decathlon in the Tehran Asian Games in 1974 and a gold in the long jump in the Bangkok Asian Games, 1978.

Supanara Sukhasvasti na Ayudhya is a Thai long jumper. By winning the gold in the long jump at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Athletics, he became Thailand's first ever finalist, medallist and champion in an athletics global event of any age category. He is also the Thai record holder in the long jump.

The Women's Long jump of the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships was held on 7 July 2011 in the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium of Kobe, Japan. In the women's long jump event, 14 athletes from the seven nations and one Chinese SAR participated. The gold medal was won by the Indian athlete Mayookha Johny with a best jump of 6.56 meters. Yuliya Tarasova of Uzbekistan, the current Asian leader of the event with a jump of 6.68 meters, failed to win a medal and finished fourth with a best jump of 6.37 meters. Another favorite, South Korean Jung Soon-Ok—with a personal best of 6.76 meters—also failed to finish on the podium. Her best jump of 6.12 meters was not even good enough for her to reach the last eight in the competition.
