Shallow Bay:The Best of Breaking Benjamin is the first greatest hits album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin, released on August 16,2011 by Hollywood Records. [3] The album features every single released by the band from 2002's Saturate to 2009's Dear Agony ,with the exception of the 2010 digital single version of "Blow Me Away";instead featuring the remix of that track featuring vocals of Sydnee Duran of Valora. A two-disc deluxe version was released alongside it,featuring remastered versions of B-sides,covers,acoustic performances, live recordings, and other rarities. [4] Shallow Bay debuted at number 22 on the US Billboard 200,and sold an initial 13,700 copies. [5] It topped the US Top Hard Rock Albums chart for three consecutive years, from 2011 to 2013,and also reached number four on the US Top Alternative Albums and US Top Rock Albums charts for 2011. [3]
Despite its name, the track "Shallow Bay" from Saturate does not appear on the album. The 2005 single "Rain" does not appear on the album either, but instead the 2004 studio version of the song which was never released as a single is also featured. [6]
In March 2010,Hollywood Records requested that the band produce two new master recordings, sought permission to release a new version of the hit song "Blow Me Away",featuring Sydnee Duran of Valora, and requested the production of Shallow Bay. [7] In May 2011,guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark James Klepaski granted the record company's requests after they were offered a $100,000 payment. Benjamin Burnley, alleging that Fink and Klepaski did not inform him,the band's management,or the band's lawyer, fired the two via email, demanding at least $250,000 in compensatory and punitive damages,as well as the exclusive right to the name "Breaking Benjamin". Fink and Klepaski's attorneys stated the two "dispute and strictly deny" Burnley's allegations, instead asserting that "at issue is the validity of a January 2009 partnership agreement giving Burnley permission to dismiss Fink and Klepaski for 'cause,'" saying that the agreement was no longer valid due to Burnley's status of indefinite hiatus. The case was ordered by a judge to arbitration. [8] Burnley's attorney,Brian Caplan, told the Associated Press,"The relationship between Mr. Burnley and the two other members of the band has ended ... Mr. Burnley intends on moving forward using the name Breaking Benjamin and the band will continue. It just won't continue in its prior configuration. He's not retiring." [9]
In August 2011,Hollywood Records scheduled the release of Shallow Bay,featuring every Breaking Benjamin single released, including the remix of "Blow Me Away". Burnley publicly opposed the album's release, saying content had been altered without his consent and did not meet his standards, refusing to consider it part of the official Breaking Benjamin catalog. [10] The disc received positive critical reception, Loudwire giving the compilation a score of 4 out of 5, [11] with The Daily Trojan praising it for balance and a progressive retrospective history, concluding with "For the first-timers,welcome to Breaking Benjamin." Breaking Benjamin is an American rock band from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, formed in 1999 by lead singer and guitarist Benjamin Burnley and drummer Jeremy Hummel. The first lineup of the band also included guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark James Klepaski. This lineup released two albums, Saturate (2002) and We Are Not Alone (2004), before Hummel was replaced by Chad Szeliga in 2005. The band released two more studio albums, Phobia (2006) and Dear Agony (2009), before entering an extended hiatus in early 2010 due to Burnley's recurring illnesses.
Saturate is the debut studio album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released on August 27, 2002. The album features three singles, including "Polyamorous", "Skin", and "Medicate". The album was certified gold by the RIAA on September 15, 2015.
We Are Not Alone is the second studio album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released on June 29, 2004. Three singles were released from the album, "So Cold", "Sooner or Later", and the full-band version of "Rain", as opposed to the original version in which the only instrument used is an acoustic guitar, which came out near the end of June 2005. The album name is a reference to the novel of the same name. We Are Not Alone sold 48,000 copies on its first week and was certified platinum by the RIAA on June 13, 2005. It is the first Breaking Benjamin album to receive a Parental Advisory label.
"Blow Me Away" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. The song is a non-album single because it was written in 2004 specifically for the Halo 2 Original Soundtrack. It was later released in 2010 as a digital single. In 2011, a remixed version of the song was released on Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin, featuring vocals of Sydnee Duran from Valora. Written by vocalist and guitarist Benjamin Burnley and then-drummer Jeremy Hummel, the song is described as featuring "hard rock roots, ... a vocal-centric aesthetic, heavy electric rhythm guitars", and "an aggressive male vocalist".
"Give Me a Sign", subtitled on the single "Give Me a Sign (Forever and Ever)", is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in January 2010 as the second single from their fourth album Dear Agony.
"The Diary of Jane" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in June 2006 as the lead single from their third album, Phobia. The song, one of their most notable and successful, is the fastest-added single ever in the history of Hollywood Records. It gained a massive amount of radio play throughout the United States and reached number one under three rock charts. The single was certified 4× Platinum in the United States on February 3, 2021, Silver in the United Kingdom on July 17, 2020, and Gold in Germany on April 3, 2023, making it their most successful single in terms of sales internationally.
"Breath" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in January 2007 as the second single from their third album, Phobia. It was the band's fourth charted song on the US Hot 100 overall, and the second from Phobia. Although "Breath" failed to capture the pop success of "The Diary of Jane" at No. 50 where "Breath" hit No. 84 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was more successful on the rock charts where it hit No. 1 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, making it Breaking Benjamin's first number-one hit, staying there for seven weeks where "The Diary of Jane" hit No. 2 and it also hit No. 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, tying with "So Cold" as their highest-charting single on the chart where "The Diary of Jane" hit No. 4. The single was certified double platinum by the RIAA in August 24, 2022.
"Until the End" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in October 2007 as the third single from their third album, Phobia. On February 11, 2014, "Until the End" was certified gold by the RIAA, which made the single the first certified song by the band. Since then, the band have been awarded with six gold, three platinum, and three multi-platinum singles.
"Polyamorous" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in July 2002 as the lead single from their debut album Saturate. The song reached number 31 on the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart and number 19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Dear Agony is the fourth studio album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released on September 29, 2009. A Best Buy edition, Japanese import version, and Zune exclusive version were also released, all of which feature bonus content. This is the first album to feature writing credits from members of the band other than Benjamin Burnley. It is also the final studio album to feature guitarist Aaron Fink and bassist Mark James Klepaski, who were both fired from the band in 2011, as well as drummer Chad Szeliga, who left the band due to creative differences in 2013.
"I Will Not Bow" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in August 2009 as the lead single from their fourth album Dear Agony. It was featured in the ending credits of the Bruce Willis film Surrogates. The song was not written specifically for the film, but according to drummer Chad Szeliga, "Ben sent a few songs to our record label, Hollywood Records," which is owned by Disney, who then decided they "wanted a Breaking Benjamin song for this movie." The song was also being used heavily on MLB Network as lead-in and lead-out music during the 2010 MLB postseason.
The American rock band Breaking Benjamin has released six studio albums, two compilation albums, three extended plays, 23 singles and 17 music videos. The group has sold over nineteen million units in the United States alone, with three platinum records, two gold records, three multi-platinum singles, three platinum singles, and six gold singles as designated by the RIAA. The band signed with Hollywood Records in 2002 following the success of their independently released eponymous EP, and began recording their first full-length major-label debut Saturate shortly thereafter. The record peaked at number two on the US Top Heatseekers chart and number 136 on the US Billboard 200. It was eventually certified gold in 2015. The band's sophomore effort, We Are Not Alone, released in 2004, peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard 200, and was later certified platinum in the United States and gold in New Zealand. Breaking Benjamin's third studio album Phobia was released in 2006 and reached number two on the US Billboard 200, number one on the US Digital Albums chart, number one on the US Top Rock Albums chart, and was later certified platinum in the United States and silver in the United Kingdom. Breaking Benjamin released their fourth record in late 2009 titled Dear Agony, reaching number one on the US Top Hard Rock Albums and US Top Alternative Albums charts, number two on the US Top Rock Albums and US Digital Albums charts, and number four on the US Billboard 200. The record was certified gold three months after its release and was later certified platinum.
"So Cold" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. It was released in March 2004 as the lead single from their second album, We Are Not Alone. Despite never having reached the number one spot on the Mainstream Rock chart, "So Cold" holds the record for the most weeks spent in the chart with 62 weeks. The single was certified Platinum by the RIAA on September 15, 2015, just before the band's debut album Saturate was certified Gold. A reimagined version was released on October 31, 2019 in anticipation for their 2020 album, Aurora.
Break the Spell is the third studio album by American rock band Daughtry, released on November 21, 2011, by RCA Records. It is a follow-up to their platinum selling album Leave This Town in 2009. On December 15, the album was officially certified Gold.
Dark Before Dawn is the fifth studio album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin, released on June 23, 2015, by Hollywood Records. It is the group's first studio album following the band's hiatus lasting from early 2010 to late 2014, and the first album to feature an entirely different lineup alongside founder and frontman Benjamin Burnley. Produced and composed by Burnley, the album took shape towards the end of the hiatus and was mostly written before the new lineup "even played a single note together." The recording process took place afterwards at both a personal studio of Burnley's and at the same studio Phobia (2006) was recorded, with all of the band members performing their respective instruments, including background vocals performed by guitarist Keith Wallen and bassist Aaron Bruch, making the record their first to feature vocals other than Burnley's.
"Failure" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. The song was released on March 23, 2015 as the lead single on the band's fifth studio album, Dark Before Dawn. The track marks the band's first release since the start of an extended hiatus entered upon in mid-2010, and is also the first recording to feature a different lineup alongside singer, writer, and guitarist Benjamin Burnley. The track is their third single to reach No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, after "Breath" (2006) and "I Will Not Bow" (2009), and spent nine weeks there. On January 9, 2017, the single was certified Gold by the RIAA.
"Angels Fall" is a song by American rock band Breaking Benjamin. Released soon after the album's lead single "Failure" on April 14, 2015, the track is the second single on their fifth studio album Dark Before Dawn and is the album's third track overall.
