The Sierra de la Fausilla (or "Faucilla") natural area is located in the south of the Region of Murcia, in the municipality of Cartagena, to the east of the city in the area surrounding the Bay of Escombreras. It has a surface area of 791 ha.
It is an area of great ecological importance and has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) [1] and a Site of Community Importance (SCI). [2]
This protected area is located in the western sector of the Sierra minera de Cartagena-La Unión, a mountain range that constitutes one of the last foothills of the Baetic System, formed in the Tertiary period, during the so-called Alpine orogeny, due to the collision of the European and African plate tectonics. [3]
This area of the Sierra Minera forms part of the so-called Alpujarra complex, made up mainly of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. [4]
It is characterised by a vegetation of cornicales and tomillares , in which the presence of a large number of protected endemic and Ibero-African plant species stands out, some of which are in danger of extinction, such as the Cartagena cypress, the cornical , the arto , the chumberillo de lobo (Caralluma europaea), the rabogato del Mar Menor ( Sideritis marminorensis), the siempreviva de Cartagena(Limonium carthaginese ), the zamarrilla de Cartagena ( Teucrium carthaginense ), the manzanilla de Escombreras (Anthemis chrysantha ), and Teucrium freynii . [5]
Birds include peregrine falcon, eagle-owl, Bonelli's eagle and trumpeter finch.
The Sierra de la Fausilla has already experienced serious deterioration of its environment with the clearing of an enormous portion of land in the Aguilones rock for the construction of the Escombreras super-port.
Currently, its eastern sector is also under threat, with the project to build a large container terminal in the cove of Gorguel. [6]
On 15 March 2013, a fire broke out on its northern slope from 10:56 am to 8 pm (declared extinguished the following day), affecting approximately 50 hectares starting from the vicinity of the new REPSOL refinery. Its causes are not known at this time.
La Unión is situated in the Region of Murcia in the southeast of Spain. It has an area of 24.6 km², and had a population of 19,907 on 1 January 2018. It has an elevation of 86 m. Its average annual temperature is 17 °C. It has balmy winters. The sun shines 320 days per year. La Unión is situated in one of the sunniest areas in Europe; this kind of climate makes possible the many leisure activities, popular fiestas, sports, and cultural activities that are held in the town. The town is linked by a regular train to Cartagena which allows views of the past industrial heritage of the area and the more modern occupations of agriculture and tourism. La Unión lies within the built-up area of Cartagena and is surrounded on all landward sides by the City of Cartagena.
Pilar de la Horadada is a town and district in the Province of Alicante, in the southeast of Spain. Located 66 km south of Alicante, the city is the southernmost of the Valencian Community, only 1 km north of the regional border.
Fuente Álamo de Murcia is a town and municipality in the Region of Murcia, southern Spain. It is situated 22 km northwest of Cartagena and 35 km south west of Murcia. The town lies in the basin of the Mar Menor surrounded by the mountains of Algarrobo, Los Gómez, Los Victorias and the Carrascoy.

Anthemis chrysantha is an Ibero-North African annual asteraceae endemism present in a few Cartagenan and Algerian islets and coastal locations.

Calblanque Regional Park, Monte de las Cenizas y Peña del Águila is a regional park in the south-east of Spain, and in this country in the autonomous community Región de Murcia. In this region, it is located in the municipalities Cartagena and La Unión. It is part of Sierra Minera, a mountain chain in the Baetic System.

The Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park is a protected area in the Spanish provinces of Málaga and Granada. It contains the Sierra de Tejeda and Sierra de Almijara mountains. The park is mountainous and is partly covered by pine forests at the lower levels, while typical Mediterranean vegetation is found higher up. There is a large number of endemic species.

The Sierra Espuña is a mountain range in the Region of Murcia, Spain. It is part of the Penibaetic System. The Sierra Espuña Regional Park protects 17,804 ha of the mountain range in the municipalities of Alhama de Murcia, Totana and Mula. The highest peak, also known as Espuña, is at 1,583 metres. The summit itself is a military area. It houses the 13th Air Surveillance Squadron radar station, part of the Spanish Air and Space Force.
Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión is a mountainous formation that extends east–west along 26 km of coastline from the city of Cartagena to Cape Palos, through the municipality of La Unión, in the Region of Murcia in Spain. Its maximum elevation is located on the Sancti Spíritus hill near Portmán, at 431 m altitude.
