Sinai Beach was a Christian metal [4] band that was formed in Riverside, California, in 2000. The band has stated on multiple occasions [5] that they are named after Mount Sinai, where Moses was given the Ten Commandments in the Bible.
Sinai Beach was started by vocalist CJ Alderson, guitarist Logan Lambert, drummer Mike Dunlap, and bassist Jeff Santo. They recorded a four-song demo and played mostly local shows. Their recording and performances gained attention of No Innocent Victim drummer, Jason Dunn. Shortly after signing with Dunn's label, Facedown Records, guitarist Mike Risinger joined on guitar. The five began to write material for their second recording that became the band's first full release, When Breath Escapes . Vocalist CJ Alderson appeared on Zao's The Lesser Lights of Heaven DVD.
As the fan base and support continued to grow Sinai Beach started to receive interest from several well-known heavy music labels and eventually signed with Chicago-based Victory Records. This allowed them the opportunity to tour with bands such as Zao, As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, Haste the Day, Still Remains, Himsa, Bleeding Through, Comeback Kid and Terror. After several US and European tours, Sinai Beach released their second full album Immersed .
Sinai Beach is listed as "Artist Alumni" on the Victory Records website and several of the members have moved away and married since the band last played together live. Sean Durham and Erik Collins both joined the band in 2006 following the departure of Santo and the brief hiatus of Risinger. Dunlap and Lambert still reside in the Riverside area, while Risinger, Durham and Collins are in the surrounding area. Alderson moved to North Carolina in 2009.
In 2013, it was announced the band would headline at Facedown Festival on March 28, 2014, [6] where the band announced their "resurrection". [7] In 2017, Lambert did an interview with Indie Vision Music, in which he stated that the band was done, though no official statement was released. He said that the reunion at Facedown Fest was their last show. [8]
Early influences of the band include Overcome, Zao, Strongarm, Throwdown, and Living Sacrifice. But the members have stated that influences changed in later years to include Black Label Society, The Cult and Pantera, although have admitted in times past that they are heavily into death metal bands such as Suffocation, Nile, and Aborted. Zao is an American metalcore band founded in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and later relocated to Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Founded in March 1993, Zao has hosted several musicians and endured numerous roster changes to the point where no original members remain. Former drummer Jesse Smith, vocalist Dan Weyandt, and guitarists Scott Mellinger and Russ Cogdell are seen by some fans as the "core" of Zao, with the current line up being the longest running in the band's history.
Facedown Records is a Christian rock record label based in Fallbrook, California, that is devoted to hardcore punk and metalcore bands with a few death metal acts such as Immortal Souls and Indwelling. Founded by No Innocent Victim drummer Jason Dunn in 1997, the label started small with a number of 7" record releases by Overcome, Dodgin Bullets, and Born Blind. As the label grew, it was able to sign artists for full album deals. xDISCIPLEx released material on Facedown, as well as Figure Four and Point of Recognition. The label also signs straight edge groups such as xDEATHSTARx and xLooking Forwardx.
No Innocent Victim, or N.I.V., is a Christian hardcore punk band on Facedown Records. The band was formed in 1992 in San Diego, California. They released two albums, and then toured with Agnostic Front. In 1998 they signed to Victory Records and recorded the album Flesh and Blood. Many tours followed in the United States, Europe and Japan with bands like Agnostic Front, U.S. Bombs, Terror, Hatebreed, P.O.D., and Madball.
Impending Doom is an American Christian deathcore band from Riverside, California. The group has released six full-length studio albums and are currently a four piece with lead vocalist Brook Reeves as one of the two original remaining members along with Manny Contreras who left the band in 2010 but returned in 2012. The band refers to their style of music as "gorship" - a portmanteau of the words gore and worship.
Nodes of Ranvier is a metalcore band from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, US, that was signed to Victory Records. The band is described as "one of Sioux Falls' most successful and popular acts ever." They have played with bands such as Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Bury Your Dead, Caliban, Comeback Kid, Norma Jean, Misery Signals, Extol and more across the US. The band's name refers to the myelin sheath gaps which are also called Nodes of Ranvier.
Symphony in Peril is a Christian metalcore band from Columbus, Ohio, United States. The band started in early 2002, and broke up in 2006, after Hellfest, which the band was to play, but was cancelled at the last minute. As of 2022, they are active again with several new members.
A Plea for Purging is a Christian metalcore band based out of Nashville, Tennessee. During their time active, they released four full-length albums on Facedown Records and two EPs. Their final release, The Life & Death of A Plea for Purging, reached No. 24 on the US Billboard Rock Albums chart and No. 11 on the Heatseekers chart. Guitarist Blake Martin played on Project 86's record, Wait for the Siren and was a touring member for Haste the Day. Drummer Aaron Eckermann was a touring musician for Corpus Christi. Vocalist Andy Atkins was featured on The Crimson Armada's song "Composed of Stone", from their album Conviction.
Those Who Fear, also known as TWF, was an American Christian metal band hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who were established in 2005. The groups' current label imprint is Facedown Records. In 2013, the band came out with a studio album called Unholy Anger. Their second studio album was issued in 2014, titled Death Sentence. Their third and Final album, State of Mind, was released in 2016.
Your Memorial was an American metalcore band from Hennepin County, Minnesota. The group is currently under contract with Facedown Records. Its debut studio album, Seasons, was released in 2008. In 2010, the band released its second studio album, Atonement. Its third studio album, Redirect, was released in 2012. On May 9 in 2017 the band announced that they were disbanding.
Sleeping Giant was an American Christian metal band from Redlands, California and Salt Lake City, Utah. All the members of the band, minus drummer Matt Weir, played in the band xDEATHSTARx.
Saving Grace is a Christian metal band from Gisborne, New Zealand. They were the first foreign band to sign to Strike First Records. Their album, The Urgency, debuted at No. 3 on the New Zealand Top 20 albums chart alongside multi-platinum sellers Lorde and Sole Mio and also debuted at No. 57 on the Billboard Hard Music Chart and No. 59 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart in the United States.
Overcome are an American Christian metalcore band. They come from Phoenix, Arizona. The band started making music in 1993 until their decade-long hiatus from 2000 to 2010, when they commenced making music again. Tooth & Nail Records released the band's first two albums, Blessed Are the Persecuted in 1996 and When Beauty Dies in 1997. Facedown Records has released the other albums from the band signed the band. They released Immortal Until Their Work Is Done in 1999, More Than Death in 2001, The Great Campaign of Sabotage in 2011, and No Reserves. No Retreats. No Regrets. in 2013. They were one of the first "Spirit-Filled Hardcore" bands, along with Unashamed, Focused, Strongarm, and Zao. They were the first band signed to Facedown Records. The band is playing at Facedown Fest 2017.
The Burial are an American Christian metalcore/melodic death metal band. Members are from South Bend, Indiana, Benton Harbor, Michigan and Champaign, Illinois. The band started making music in 2005. The band now consists of lead vocalist and guitarist, Elisha Mullins, lead guitarist, Todd Hatfield, drummer, Kaleb Luebchow, and bass guitarist, Alex Poole. The band released one EP, Age of Deceit, in 2009 with Sancrosanct Records. They signed with Strike First Records, where they released, The Winepress, a studio album, in 2010. Their second album, Lights and Perfections, released by Facedown Records in 2012. The subsequent album released by Facedown Records, In the Taking of Flesh, was released in 2013.
Hands was an American Christian metal band from Fargo, North Dakota, United States. The band started making music in 2007, with lead vocalist and guitarist Shane Ochsner, lead guitarist Ian Johnson, bass guitarist Chris Schwartz, and drummer Josh Silbernagel. Jerik Hendrickson became the band's lead guitarist in 2010, but he has since left the band, with Shane Ochsner taking over lead guitar duties. The band released one extended play, The Everlasting, independently in 2007. Their first studio album, The Sounds of Earth, was released by Oort Records in 2009. The band signed with Facedown Records, where they released Creator, a studio album, in 2009. The third studio album, Give Me Rest, was released in 2011, also on Facedown Records. The band reunited in 2017 for Facedown Fest 2017.
Onward to Olympas was an American metalcore band from Salisbury, North Carolina. The band started making music in 2005, and disbanded in 2013. Their membership was vocalists, Chris Davis and Kramer Lowe, guitarists and vocalist, Andy Simmons, Justin Gage, and Kyle Phillips, drummer and vocalist, Mark Hudson, guitarist, Andrew Higginbotham, bass guitarist, Justin Allman, and drummers, Matt Burnside, Nick Helvey. The band released one independently made album, The End of the Beginning, in 2007, and their lone extended play, Victory at All Costs, in 2008. Their first studio album, This World Is Not My Home, was released by Facedown Records, in 2010. The subsequent studio album, The War within Us, was released by Facedown Records, in 2011. They released, Indicator, with Facedown Records, in 2012, and this was their third and final studio album.
Call to Preserve was an American Christian and straight edge crossover thrash band who played a fusion hardcore punk and metalcore. They come from Rockledge, Florida. The band started making music in 2003, and disbanded in 2011. Their membership was vocalist, John Ellis, guitarists, Duke Ahrens, Matt Aviles, and Harbor Partin, bass guitarist, Kyle Bowen, and drummer, Mike Aviles. The band released one independently made extended play, Call to Preserve, in 2003. Their first studio album, Unsinkable, was released by Strike First Records, in 2006. The subsequent studio album, From Isolation, was released by Facedown Records, in 2008. They released, Life of Defiance, with Facedown Records, in 2010, and this was final studio album. Their last release, an extended play, Validation, was released by Facedown Records, in 2011, marking this as their final musical recording.
The King Is Coming is the third studio album from Saving Grace. Facedown Records released the album on November 22, 2011. Saving Grace worked with Zorran Mendonsa, in the production of this album.
Bloodlined Calligraphy is an American metalcore band, infusing death metal and thrash metal. Hailing from Ypsilanti, Michigan, the band started making music in 1996 under the name Friction. In 1999, the band changed its name to Bloodlined Calligraphy and the band's lineup consisted of Matt Carter (drums), Matt Fleming, Ryan Hampton (guitar), Eric Cargile, and Josh Colvin (guitar). The band signed to Selah Records and, in 2002, they released their first full-length album, Say Hi to the Bad Guy. In 2003, Fleming left the band amicably. The band conducted a nationwide search for their next vocalist, with Fleming having a large say in who should replace him as the band's vocalist. The band asked Michigan native Ally French, who was fronting a touring metalcore band in Ohio at the time, to audition. Ally had sung clean vocals alongside Fleming for several of Bloodlined Calligraphy's live shows and was Fleming's favored replacement. The band appointed Ally as their vocalist and played their first live shows together in late 2003. During the band's second show with Ally at the front, the group caught the eyes and ears of Jason Dunn, owner of Los Angeles-based record labels Facedown Records and Strike First Records. The group became part of Strike First Records and released an EP in 2004 titled The Beginning of the End, which was recorded by Mike Hasty, guitarist of another female-fronted, Michigan-based hardcore band, Walls of Jericho. Shortly after the album's release, guitarist Josh Colvin was replaced by Shawn Williams.
Falling Cycle was a Christian metal/Christian hardcore band from Riverside, California. They have been compared to Darkest Hour and No Innocent Victim. Guitarist Sean Durham joined Sinai Beach soon after the band broke-up.
