History

Singapore Selection XI was created to form one of the best players in Singapore back in the days until 1996 where Football Association of Singapore (FAS), created Singapore first professional league known as the S.League which then the team consists of players playing in the league itself. Since 2001, Singapore Selection XI has participated in the Sultan of Selangor's Cup to strengthen the ties between two rival teams, Selangor FA and Singapore FA and to rekindle their rivalry after Singapore pulled out of the Malaysian League in 1994. The rivalry between two teams are very intense because of their status as the two most successful teams in Malaysian football history and matches between the two sides has even been dubbed as the Malayan El'Clasico back in 1920s until the late 1990s.

From 2012 until 2014, Singapore Selection XI was only restricted using up to maximum four LionsXII players which was at the time competing in the Malaysia Super League.

In 2013, the Singapore Selection XI, coached by V. Sundramoorthy played against Atlético Madrid in the Peter Lim Charity Cup and they lost 0–2. [1] In 2014, the team played against Juventus at the new National Stadium, Singapore and lost 0–5. [2] The team also participated in the Barclays Asia Trophy in July 2015. [3]

In 2024, after a seven years hiatus, Singapore Selection XI was then reformed to take on Selangor at the iconic Merdeka Stadium on 17 August 2024. Balestier Khalsa head coach, Peter de Roo was appointed by FAS as the head coach for the team. de Roo takes on 7 of his club players to the team and also reuniting with 3 of his former players, Ho Wai Loon, Kyoga Nakamura and Daniel Goh bringing up the tally to 10 players he is familiarised with, while Lion City Sailors has refused to released their players due to the club tight fixtures. Faris Ramli appeared four times in the Sultan of Selangor Cup becoming the first player to achieved this feat.
