Sir Darryl Farris (born November 5, 1986), known mononymously as Sir (stylized as SiR), is an American singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Inglewood, California, he released his debut album Seven Sundays (2015), via indie label Fresh Selects. He would go on to secure a record deal with Carson-based indie label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), where he released his second album November (2018). His third album, Chasing Summer (2019), was also issued by TDE, in conjunction with major-label RCA Records.

Early life

Sir Darryl Farris grew up in a musical family with his mother, brothers, and cousin being gospel singers in Inglewood. His mother was a backup singer for Michael Jackson and Anita Baker, and his uncle Andrew Gouche was a bassist for Prince. He is the younger brother of Grammy Award nominated rapper D Smoke. He earned a degree in recording arts at the Los Angeles Film School, where he developed his songwriting, arranging, and production skills. [1] [2]

Musical career

2007–2014: Career beginnings

In 2007, SiR joined a songwriting group called WoodWorks with his brothers and his cousin Tiffany Gouché, who wrote songs for Jaheim and The Pussycat Dolls. [3] He landed a job engineering for Tyrese Gibson in 2012 while quietly developing his craft as a songwriter. After meeting the songwriting duo Dre & Vidal, he went on to work with Anita Baker. From 2011 through 2015, he co-wrote material for Ginuwine, Jill Scott, and Stevie Wonder. [4] In 2014, he featured on Anderson .Paak's album Venice .

2015–2018: Seven Sundays and signing to TDE

On July 31, 2015, SiR released his debut album, titled Seven Sundays, through the independent record label, Fresh Selects. The album featured production from Knxwledge, DK The Punisher, Iman Omari, Chris Dave, J. LBS and more, as well as features from Anderson .Paak, his brother D Smoke, and Inglewood rapper, Fat Ron. [5] The success of Seven Sundays on SoundCloud got the attention of Dave Free of Top Dawg Entertainment, who then reached out to Fresh Selects to connect him to SiR. [6]

Through that initial introduction, SiR would go on to be featured on TDE artists, Jay Rock's 90059 song "The Ways", and Isaiah Rashad's "Rope / Rosegold" on The Sun's Tirade . [7] [8] On October 6, 2016, SiR released the EP titled HER which includes a feature on "Cadillac Dreams" from Big K.R.I.T. In January 2017, it was announced that SiR had signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. On February 10, 2017, he released his first EP on the label titled HER TOO with Anderson .Paak as a guest appearance. On January 18, 2018, SiR released his sophomore album November . This time out the album featured production from DJ Khalil, Mndsgn, Andre Harris, returning Seven Sundays collaborators DK The Punisher and J. LBS, and more. The sole features on the project came by way of TDE label-mate ScHoolboy Q and British singer-songwriter Etta Bond. [10]

2019–present: Chasing Summer

On August 8, 2019, SiR announced his third album via TDE, releasing the first single off the album, "Hair Down" featuring Kendrick Lamar. [11] Chasing Summer was released on August 30, 2019, and includes guest features from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Jill Scott, Smino, Kadhja Bonet, Sabrina Claudio, and Zacari. [12]

On February 3, 2020, SiR performed at NPR Tiny Desk Concert. He devoted the performance to his infant godson who died a couple of days before. His set list included: "The Recipe", "New Sky", "Wires In The Sky", and "John Redcorn". [13]

On April 23, 2020, as part of Top Dawg Entertainment's Fan Appreciation Week, SiR released the song Rapper Weed featuring Boogie. [14] On April 27, he released the music video for the song "John Redcorn", which was inspired by the TV show, King of the Hill . [15] In May 2022, He released "Satisfaction".

Digi+Phonics is an African American hip hop production team, composed of California-based record producers Tae Beast, Sounwave, Dave Free and Willie B. They currently serve as the main in-house producers for Carson-based record label, Top Dawg Entertainment. Digi+Phonics work significantly on projects from all the members of hip hop supergroup Black Hippy, who are also signed to Top Dawg and is composed of rappers Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. Mark Anthony Spears, known professionally as Sounwave, is an American record producer and songwriter. He is a frequent collaborator of rapper Kendrick Lamar, having worked on all of his projects since his 2009 self-titled extended play. Sounwave has also worked with artists such as Taylor Swift, Chloe x Halle, Baby Keem, Mac Miller, and Bleachers. He has won three Grammy Awards, including two for Best Rap Album.

David Isaac Friley, known professionally as Dave Free, is an American filmmaker and record executive. Born and raised in Inglewood, California, he is best known for his creative partnership with rapper Kendrick Lamar. During his tenure as co-president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), Free directed music videos and short films with Lamar under the name the Little Homies. Following his departure from TDE in 2019, he co-founded the creative company PGLang. Among Free's accolades are one Grammy Award and three MTV Video Music Awards.

Zacari Moses Pacaldo I, known mononymously as Zacari, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist. He is signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and released his EP Run Wild Run Free on March 15, 2019.

Tiffany Gouché, also known as "TGooch", is an American singer, songwriter, and producer from Inglewood, California.

Robert Lee Gill Jr., better known by his stage name Reason, is an American rapper and songwriter. He is signed to hip hop record label Top Dawg Entertainment, where he started to gain recognition. His TDE debut, There You Have It, was released on September 28, 2018, a re-release of an album from 2017. His major label debut album New Beginnings was released on October 9, 2020.

He first became known as the winner of the Netflix hip hop-based reality competition series Rhythm + Flow in 2019. The following year, he independently released his debut studio album Black Habits (2020), which earned him nominations for Best Rap Album and Best New Artist at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. In 2023, he signed with Snoop Dogg's Death Row Records, an imprint of gamma.
