Tyler County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,208. Its county seat is Middlebourne. The county was founded in 1814 and is named after John Tyler, Sr., father of President John Tyler.
Sistersville is a city in Tyler County, West Virginia, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,396 at the 2010 census. The Sistersville Ferry crosses the Ohio River to the unincorporated community of Fly in Monroe County, Ohio.
Virginia City Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District encompassing the former mining villages of Virginia City and Gold Hill, both in Storey County, as well as Dayton and Silver City, both to the south in adjacent Lyon County, Nevada, United States. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, the district is one of only six in the state of Nevada.
Literary Hall is a mid-19th-century brick library, building and museum located in Romney, a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is located at the intersection of North High Street and West Main Street. Literary Hall was constructed between 1869 and 1870 by the Romney Literary Society.
The Exchange Building, also known as the Merchant's Exchange Building or The Exchange, is a historic commercial building in at 15-19 West Bank Street in Petersburg, Virginia. Built in 1841, this Greek Revival style building is one of the least-altered examples of a 19th-century market hall. It now houses the Siege Museum commemorating the Siege of Petersburg. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
Old City Hall, known formerly as City Hall, is the former city hall of Richmond, Virginia that was designed by Elijah E. Myers. It served as City Hall from its completion in 1894 through the 1970s. The building occupies its own city block in downtown Richmond, bounded by 10th and 11th Streets to the west and east, and Capitol Street and East Broad Street to the south. The building is executed in a meticulous Gothic Revival style, and was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture.
Charleston City Hall is a historic city hall located at Charleston, West Virginia. It was constructed in 1921 in the Neoclassical style. It is located opposite the Kanawha County Courthouse, at the center of downtown Charleston. The major, or entrance, elevation faces Virginia Street with monumental design features and walls clad in smooth gray limestone. The equally impressive limestone-faced Court Street facade presents a grand prospect which runs southward for nearly a block between Virginia Street and Kanawha Boulevard. These two elevations are entirely formal in design because they were intended to face the courthouse and principal city thoroughfare. The four-story building is centered with a colossal engaged colonnade of six fluted Doric columns, which rises three-stories in support of a massive cornice. The interior features a grand entrance lobby, and classically designed stairhall and council chambers.
The Knights of Pythias Building, also known as the Knights of Pythias Hall is an historic Knights of Pythias lodge hall located in Virginia City, Nevada, United States. It was built of cast iron and stuccoed brick in 1876 by Nevada Lodge No. 1 of the Knights of Pythias, which had been formed on March 23, 1873. It was also used the city's other Knights of Pythias lodges: Lincoln Lodge No. 6 formed in 1874, and Triumph Lodge No. 11 formed in 1879. It is one of the few unaltered false-fronted buildings remaining in Virginia City. The Knights of Pythias Building is a contributing property in the Virginia City Historic District which was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
Whitescarver Hall is a historic dormitory building located on the campus of Alderson Broaddus University at Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia, United States. It was built in 1911–1912, and is a three-story white brick building in the Neoclassical style. It measures 40 feet by 90 feet. It features a hipped roof covered in red tile and four classical pilaster topped with Ionic order capitals.
Sistersville Historic District is a national historic district located at Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. It encompasses 215 contributing buildings and one contributing structure that include the civic, commercial, and residential core of Sistersville. Most of the buildings in the district date from the late-19th and early-20th century in popular architectural styles, such as Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Late Victorian. Notable buildings include the Russell Building or Daily Oil Review Office (1832), McCormick /Henderson House (1880-1884), St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1885), Main Street School (1896), Union National Bank Building, Henneghan-Daly Block (1896), and Riverside Mill (1852). Also located in the district are the separately listed Sistersville City Hall (1897) and Wells Inn (1894).
The E. A. Durham House, also known as the Durham-Peters Residence, is a historic home located at Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. It was built in 1921, and is a 20-room Italian Renaissance Revival-style residence. It features pale stone and stucco and a low-pitched green tile roof. The interior features mahogany paneling, a six-foot Carrara marble fireplace, and Dresden chandelier.
Wells-Schaff House, also known as "Welkin," is a historic home located at Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. It was built in 1832, and is a two-story, Federal-style brick residence. It features a one-story front porch with Doric order columns added about 1896. The rear addition was built about 1935. Also on the property is a summer house and the Wells Family cemetery containing the grave of Charles Wells (1745-1815), founder of Wells' Landing.
Wells-Twyford House is a historic home located near Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia. It was built in 1854, and is a two-story, five bay, I house plan dwelling with a rear ell and Greek Revival-style details. It has a gable roof and features a one-story, 26 foot long front porch. Also on the property is a two-story frame garage that may have been used as a barn at the beginning of the 20th century.
Wells Inn, also known as the Hotel Wells, is a historic hotel located at Sistersville, Tyler County, West Virginia, United States. It was built in 1894–1895, and is a two-story, brick building featuring a two-story verandah. The interior features decor of the 1890s, including a mosaic tile floor, oak furnishings, and a tiled fireplace. The hotel was undergoing renovation in 2010.
Downtown Huntington Historic District is a national historic district located at Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. The original district encompassed 59 contributing buildings; the boundary increase added 53 more contributing buildings. It includes the central business district of Huntington, and includes several of its municipal and governmental buildings. It contains the majority of the historic concentration of downtown commercial buildings. Notable buildings include the Huntington City Hall, Johnson Memorial Church (c.1886/1912/1935), Trinity Episcopal Church (1882), Davis Opera House, Love Hardware Building, Reuschleins Jewelry building (1923), the Newcomb Building, the Morrison Building (1919), Keith-Albee Theater (1928), West Virginia Building, and Gideon Building. Located in the district are the separately listed Carnegie Public Library, Cabell County Courthouse, U.S. Post Office and Court House, and Campbell-Hicks House.
Alderson Historic District is a national historic district located at Alderson, Greenbrier County and Monroe County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 196 contributing buildings and three contributing sites located in the commercial district and surrounding residential section. They are predominantly 19th and early 20th century frame detached residences and masonry commercial buildings including notable examples of the Federal, Greek Revival, and Queen Anne styles. Notable buildings include the Woodson Mohler Grocery building, Johnson and Gwinn warehouse, Greenbrier Mill, First National Bank building, Alderson's Store, Chesapeake and Ohio depot, U.S. Post Office, and the City Hall (1939). The Alderson Ferry Site is for the ferry established 1789. Located in the district is the separately listed Alderson Bridge.
East Hall is a historic home located on the campus of West Virginia State University at Institute, Kanawha County, West Virginia. It was built in 1893, and is a modest, two-story frame building with a hipped roof. In 1937, it was moved from the east side of campus to the west quadrangle. Until 1974, it was the official home to presidents of West Virginia State University and is the oldest building on campus.
Shaw Hall is a historic dormitory located on the campus of West Liberty University at West Liberty, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1919–1920, and is a three-story red brick building in the Classical Revival style. The front and end facades are dominated by two-story porticos with Ionic order columns having a stucco shaft. It was built as the first dormitory on campus and housed female students. It is the oldest building on the campus of West Liberty University. The building now houses classrooms and administrative offices. The building is named for John C. Shaw, president of West Liberty Normal School from 1908 to 1919.
Shotwell Hall, also known as Fraternity Hall, is a historic dormitory located on the campus of West Liberty University at West Liberty, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was designed by noted Wheeling architect Frederick F. Faris (1870-1927) and built as a Public Works Administration project in 1937. It is a 2 1⁄2-story red brick over concrete block building in the Colonial Revival style. It features a broken pediment doorway and pedimented gable ends. The building was built as a men's dormitory, but now houses faculty offices. The building is named for Nathan Shotwell, first president of West Liberty Academy from 1838 to 1854.
Wheeling Historic District, also known as the Wheeling Central Business District, is a national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district includes 205 contributing buildings in the central business district of Wheeling. It includes the site of the original location of Fort Henry. The buildings are representative of a number of popular architectural styles from the early-19th century through the present including Greek Revival and Late Victorian. The District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
